Decades after her death, Princess Diana’s iconic fashion legacy is getting popular with a whole new generation…
Transcript
00:00She wore ridiculously chic clothing.
00:08There's been a resurgence of her in the media.
00:11Diana was the influencer that the internet needed.
00:22There is a different Diana for everyone.
00:30She became this every woman, you know, for people on the internet and kind of an influencer
00:43that I am so much more interested in.
00:47I think she kind of added a more positive, multi-layered spin to the regular kind of
00:55Instagram narrative.
01:00There was something about her which was so kind of magical and untouchable, but then
01:08something about her too that was so regular and relatable.
01:12She had this grace about her, her kindness that kind of shone through all these images
01:19that we have of her.
01:20She was human, you know, it was the first time we saw someone we could relate to in
01:25that role.
01:30Are you in love?
01:31Of course.
01:32Whatever in love means.
01:35I think people can just relate to this idea of kind of going through hell maybe with like
01:41a partner or like in a job or something and then wanting to come out the other side and
01:46use clothes as this way to express yourself and to maybe discover who you are again.
01:51It was her journey as a woman, just trying to find herself.
01:54She used clothes as a weapon from the start because she realized pretty early on that
02:04she didn't really have that many outlets to speak.
02:07We consumed her through photographs and through news clips of her.
02:12So a lot of the time her clothing was the way that she could make a statement quickest
02:19and to the most people.
02:20She was very purposeful in the outfits that she wore, whether it was to a hospital visit
02:26or for a visit overseas.
02:28She was always communicating through her fashion.
02:40We've been getting hit with all these different depictions of Diana.
02:44Fashion itself is very cyclical, as we know, and she was such an icon of mostly 80s, early
02:5090s fashion, which, of course, is coming back into style in lots of different ways.
02:56So I think it's just been a perfect storm of the right circumstances being in place
03:02for her to become a kind of new fashion icon again.
03:06I don't think it was the brand's idea, I think it was the demand, it was the people who kind
03:10of, this obsession with Diana that made the brands realize, oh, we could kind of profit
03:16off this.
03:17Diana took the styles of her era, so late 70s, 80s, early 90s, and she transformed them
03:24into fashion.
03:25She transformed them into fashion, and she transformed them into fashion.
03:29The styles of her era, so late 70s, 80s, early 90s, and she transformed them into something
03:36that was a little bit more classic, a little more timeless, a little more unique to her.
03:43And then people, when they look back at that, rather than saying, I'm dressing for the 80s,
03:50they could say, I'm emulating Princess Diana.
03:53So it gives people this link to someone who they have these memories of or who they want
03:57to emulate.
04:04There is an interest in linking yourself back to this beloved working royal that came before
04:10you, Princess Diana.
04:11So I think for the Duchess of Cambridge and the Duchess of Sussex, that was a multifaceted
04:18choice that they could make.
04:20Almost everything that the royal family does is intentional, and that comes all the way
04:24down to clothing.
04:27The examples of Diana's fashion.
04:33I think today, Princess Diana would still be having that kind of timeless, classic style
04:39to her.
04:40I don't know if she would be up on the latest trends.
04:42I think she would have still kept it very classic, very sleek silhouettes.
04:45I like to think she'd still be rocking a pair of cycling shorts, a big oversized sweatshirt,
04:51and showing the TikTok kids how it's done.
