00:00A protest is now being held in Cebu City, where the local government is inviting public establishments to play local songs.
00:11This is part of the campaign of the city to preserve the heritage and identity of Cebuans.
00:17The center of the news from Jesse Atienza of PTV Cebu.
00:23Cebu City is known as one of the oldest cities in the country,
00:27which has also become the center of gossip.
00:29The old structures that can be seen around the city are proof of this.
00:34It is important for the local government to preserve this, along with the Bisaya language.
00:40That is why the Cebu City Council is now inviting a protest
00:44to invite public establishments such as hotels, malls, restaurants, and many more
00:52to play Bisaya songs.
00:55Ten years ago, eight years ago, we didn't have enough material to sustain us.
01:05But now, we have more.
01:07We have more.
01:08Why don't we promote in our neighborhood establishments, malls, hotels?
01:14In a privileged speech, Garganera encouraged the council
01:19to promote the use of the Bisaya dialect in greeting the locals.
01:27Language is something that really identifies the culture of a particular place.
01:35Studies show that every week, the language of Cebu is forgotten.
01:44There is a dialect that is not practiced.
01:49Although it was taken perhaps out of context, this is not mandatory.
01:53This is just requesting.
01:54According to the Hotel, Resort, and Restaurant Association of Cebu, or HRAC,
01:59they are ready to participate in a public hearing on the proposed proposal,
02:04especially since each restaurant and hotel business has its own branding.
02:10This is something we already do in our properties.
02:12I think if you put a mandatory 30 percent, it will be difficult
02:17as many of the hotels also have branding of their own, especially for piped-in music.
02:22In fairness to our local government, they are always open for discussion.
02:27So when the time comes, we will discuss it.
02:30The LGU of Cebu City is ready to give the lowest business tax rates,
02:35recognition, and incentives to the establishments that will be affected by the proposal.
02:40From PTV Cebu, Jesse Atienza for Pambansang TV in Bagong, Philippines.
