The Bible or a Dr. Seuss book? Taking the oath of office is just as legitimate using either.

00:00So help me God.
00:01So help me God.
00:02So help me God.
00:30I wouldn't say it's my Bible.
00:31I don't really have anything like that.
00:34It's just, it was just a special thing between my kids and me.
00:38And to me, it's the right message for how to make the world a better place.
00:42When I was a kid, I grew up to a single mom who was a coal miner.
00:47And she told me every day of my life that as long as I believed in myself and worked hard,
00:52I can accomplish anything.
00:54And that's the message in that book too.
00:56For all of us to know who we are and know what our contributions can be and give it our all.
01:02When I was making the arrangements for my swearing in, I asked,
01:05do I have to be sworn in on a Bible was the question I asked.
01:08And the person that I was talking to said, no, there are no rules.
01:11You don't have to use anything at all.
01:13If there's something that's meaningful to you, you can use that.
01:16And I said, is it okay if it's a Dr. Seuss book?
01:19And she said, I don't see why not.
01:27You can go out, go back throughout history.
01:30And there are a number of presidents that didn't use a Bible.
01:33And when our state representatives are sworn in in the state of Missouri,
01:38they all just stand in the room and raise their right hand and administer the oath
01:44without putting their left hand on anything.
02:27We need more perspectives and we need people who are more willing to think outside the box
02:32and bring new ideas and new solutions.
02:34Because this doing things the way we've always done them isn't doing any of us any favors, really.
02:41So let's get out there and try new things.
02:43If it starts with Dr. Seuss, so be it.
02:45But let's be more innovative.
