00:00I think this is one of the great questions in physics and philosophy is where are the aliens?
00:08Maybe they're among us, I don't know. Some people think I'm an alien. Not true.
00:30Eventually, history suggests there will be some doomsday event. The alternative is to
00:51become a space-faring civilization and a multi-planet species, which I hope you would agree that
00:56is the right way to go. When I was a kid, I was wondering, what's the meaning of life? Why
01:26are we here? What's it all about? And I came to the conclusion that what really matters is trying
01:36to understand the right questions to ask.
02:26The most important mistake I see smart people making is assuming that they're smart. They're not.
02:56You want to do projects that are inspiring and that make people excited about the future. Life's
03:16got to be about more than just solving problems. You want to get up in the morning and say, yes,
03:20I'm looking forward to that thing happening.
04:21Space is one of those things that I think almost everyone is inspired by. And if you asked people,
04:31what was the most inspiring event in history, it was probably landing on the moon. You ask people
04:36anywhere. We can bring life as we know it and breathe life into Mars where it doesn't exist
04:43today and ensure that if there is some kind of cataclysmic event on Earth, that life as we know
04:49it continues to exist.
05:06There's a certain probability that is irreducible that something may happen to Earth. Despite our
05:13best intentions, despite everything we try to do, there's a probability at a certain point that
05:18some either external force or some internal unforced error causes civilization to be
05:27destroyed. My personal ideology is split right now between trying to be helpful on Earth-related
05:35stuff, which is sustainable energy, and then trying to advance space technology so we can
05:41establish a self-sustaining city on Mars. But I do think it's important to be a multi-planet,
05:45not just one planet, but another planet.
06:15The implant connects wirelessly to a wearable device called The Link,
06:28which can be configured through an iPhone app.
06:45When
06:53people see robots going down the street killing people, they don't know how to react because it
06:59seems so ethereal.
07:45So
09:15we as an agency, we want to go to Mars and even beyond. And of course, we're very excited about
09:44the excitement that Elon is bringing to this, that SpaceX is bringing to this idea of humans
09:51expanding throughout the solar system.
09:58And we want the things that are in science fiction novels and movies not to be science
10:17fiction forever. We want them to be real one day.
