Mary Trump, Donald Trump's niece, tells Brut why she calls him "the world's most dangerous man."
Transcript
00:00He cannot be seen to be weak in any way whatsoever and if it means denying the reality of a deadly disease or if it means diminishing the extent to which this disease is dangerous, then he will do that.
00:31I don't think it's an overstatement to say that pretty much every egregious thing Donald has done since he's been in the Oval Office was a direct result of how my grandfather treated him as a child and then later as an adult.
00:47He has no impulse control. He's deeply selfish. He is always going to put his self interest above anybody else's, including the citizens of the country that he's supposed to be leading.
01:01The person at the head of the American government has traditionally been considered the most powerful person on the planet.
01:06So you put those things together, the power inherent in the office and his very severe psychopathologies and you get somebody who's incredibly dangerous, not just to his country, but to the entire planet.
01:36Life was a zero sum game. He treated his family that way. And that means there could always only be one winner and everybody else was a loser. And being a loser was punished severely.
01:48So it was sort of this win at all costs mentality that meant that even if you knew what the rules were, they didn't apply to you because if it was good for you, if it benefited you somehow, it couldn't possibly be wrong.
02:04This is the way Donald approaches everything.
02:16My grandfather had a very odd idea of what made somebody weak.
02:22So in my family, it wasn't just being kind or admitting your mistakes. Being weak could also be having some kind of illness, which was the case for my grandmother, or having an addiction, which was the case for my dad.
02:39So Donald's behavior right now vis-a-vis his diagnosis of coronavirus, but more broadly, his approach to the virus since the beginning is just a way in which that's continuing to manifest itself.
02:56One of the greatest scams ever perpetrated on the American people was convincing a large portion of them that Donald cared about working people. That is a lie. I mean, he doesn't care about anybody, but he certainly doesn't care about working people.
03:23And I think we've seen this most recently in his behavior after his release from the hospital.
03:32He walked into the White House, a sick man, contagious with a deadly virus, took off his mask and was completely willing to endanger every single staff member he came into contact with, from the Secret Service to the secretaries to the housekeepers to the people who make his meals and make his life comfortable on a day-to-day basis.
03:55He does not care.
04:03I decided to write this book when I did because I was deeply worried that he was going to continue to get away with everything he's been getting away with.
04:17And I wanted the American people to have as much information as possible in this upcoming election, information I don't believe they had access to in 2016.
04:26And I know I've been criticized a lot for not coming out sooner.
04:31But the truth of the matter is, in 2016, as his niece and as a New Yorker, it never occurred to me that he would win the primary, let alone get to the Oval Office.
04:45I'm writing this much more as an American citizen than than as a member of the family.
04:52I think what the American people in particular need to know about Donald before this incredibly crucial election is that he is a deeply psychologically disordered person who has never been treated for his psychopathologies.
05:09And he is never going to get better.
05:13And he is only going to get worse because any untreated illness deteriorates over time.
05:21He's going to find that unacceptable.
05:30So there is literally only one good scenario on November 3rd, and that's if Joe Biden wins in such a huge landslide that absolutely nobody can question the legitimacy of the election.
05:46If Joe Biden wins and it's close or if Joe Biden wins, but we don't find out the results right away, it's going to be a disaster.
05:55We cannot kid ourselves about what Donald is willing to do to change the results or muddy the waters for his followers, because it's really important to understand that, you know, we're having this this conversation in the context of a situation in which Donald is already actively cheating to steal the election.
06:21He's trying to convince people in the middle of a deadly pandemic that voting by mail is somehow fraudulent.
06:29He's trying to convince people that if Joe Biden does win, the election will have been rigged.
