This French non-profit found a way to make bike rides both fun and useful: they pick up trash while cycling.

Brut nature met the Big'Up Cyclean team in South of France. They took us with them on a ride.

00:00Let's go for the trash hunt, a little bit of forest to get in shape
00:05and then we go to the beach
00:07and it will be the treasure hunt, what will we find today?
00:12What is the question?
00:30Now we're going to go down, we're going to go on the sand mill
00:33so you put yourself in a turbo position
00:35and you put yourself on the biggest development, on the big pinion
00:39and let's go!
00:45The idea is that in fact with Richard
00:48who is someone who has lived here for 17 years
00:52who is a bicycle renter
00:54in fact when he had the fat bikes
00:56we started to go for walks often here between here and Comtis
01:01obviously we were concerned about the waste
01:04so we picked up a few
01:06and we started to find out a little bit
01:08but why is it there, where does it come from, etc.
01:10and we said to ourselves, but what can we do?
01:12So obviously we're not going to turn into beach drinkers
01:15because we don't have the financial means
01:17and the means in terms of structure to do it
01:19but what we can do is raise awareness
01:22that is to say to bring people
01:24who already have an extraordinary kiff
01:26by doing what we do today, the walk
01:28you see we are alone on the beach, there is no one
01:30there are just a few fishermen
01:32so already it is a feeling of freedom that is extraordinary
01:35so we decided to raise awareness
01:38by showing them in fact two views
01:42compared to what is on the dune and at the foot of the dune
01:45what is found here
01:47so here we are going to stop to do our little quiz
01:50and to pick up some waste
01:52if we manage to climb the dune
01:54yeah it's good, it's going by itself
01:59to the soft sand
02:07so how does this little quiz work?
02:09so the idea is that I ask you a question
02:11you give me a number and I tell you more or less
02:13and we go around
02:15and the one who has the right answer
02:18so has a point
02:20and the one who has the least good answer
02:22so tonight the aperitif
02:24first question
02:26if we put end to end all the straws
02:28that are found per year on the beaches of the whole world
02:30how many times would that equal the height of the Eiffel Tower?
02:32knowing that the Eiffel Tower is 300 meters
02:3464
02:35plus
02:36228
02:37plus
02:38270
02:40yeah
02:41one point
02:43since 1950
02:45how many billions of plastic waste have accumulated on the planet?
02:486 billion
02:50plus
02:516.4
02:52minus
02:536.3
03:04here we have green
03:06here
03:07Mr. Cossure
03:08we don't know where he comes from but we don't like him
03:10these are yoghurt skins
03:12mandarin
03:13so a priori it's something that comes from Spain
03:15the waste comes from 80% of the earth
03:17it comes here by the river
03:19it's the Adour basin
03:21which is the big river
03:23so it flows through there
03:25and also a lot from Spain
03:26because there is a current in the Gulf of Gascon
03:28that does that
03:29and so it sprays the waste like that
03:31and then
03:32which also comes from the Arcachon basin
03:34because here we are in a northwest flow
03:36so it comes from there
03:38I think I found the jackpot
03:42is that in the ocean?
03:46it's ridiculous what you find on the beach
03:49people they just
03:50they throw everything in the water
03:51they don't even think about it
03:53what they do
03:54half of it is a lot of fishing sticks
03:57and then common waste
03:59it's the first time I do that
04:01and
04:02frankly being a chef here
04:04telling me that it ends up in the stomach of the fish
04:07and then in our plates
04:09it really hurts
04:11so you have to do everything to stop that
04:15come on
04:16let's go down
04:18the treasure hunt was good my friends
04:20what did you find?
04:22a shoe
04:26these are fishing boots
04:28what we find the most
04:30are plastic bags like that
04:32and fish waste
04:34so a lot of
04:36fish net waste
04:38knowing that this is 100% plastic
04:44come on, we did our collection
04:46we are happy
04:47now we have to go back quickly
04:48because it's a storm
04:59thank you very much
05:01see you soon
05:02bye
05:04hello
05:05and so now
05:06this is the moment
05:08where we look
05:09precisely everything we found
05:11and we sort it
05:12so we will keep a certain number
05:14that we will recycle
05:15and then everything else
05:16it will go either to the trash
05:17or to the trash can
05:18what do we do with that?
05:20many things
05:21our most ambitious project
05:22it was that in fact
05:23it is to teach it
05:24of the association
05:26almost zero cost
05:28and suddenly the rest
05:29it's inside
05:30so
05:31one of the first things
05:32that we recycled
05:33it's that in fact
05:34with plugs
05:35nothing is waste
05:36everything is matter
05:37so that's with floating wood
05:39all that recovered on the beach
05:40we try to sell them
05:41to the benefit of the association
05:43it allows us
05:44to pay the rent
05:45electricity
05:46insurance
05:47because we are all volunteers
05:48obviously
05:49so here
05:50then we do things
05:51a little more subversive
05:52there it is
05:53the whole world lands
05:54at Mimisan
05:55thank you for the memories
05:56and there
05:57it's actually
05:58all the waste
05:59that we found
06:00these last few months
06:01that were
06:02more or less readable
06:03there are things
06:04that come from China
06:05for example
06:06we have a plate
06:07a plate of medicine
06:08that comes from China
06:09it comes from Indonesia
06:10there are things
06:11that come from Spain
06:12it comes from the whole world
06:13and
06:14we make little
06:15funny creations
06:16and in fact
06:17the most important thing
06:18is that
06:19we must not forget
06:20that on the beach
06:21there are 80%
06:22of the waste
06:23that comes from the earth
06:24so that means
06:25that we don't throw away
06:26his clog
06:27that we put
06:28his
06:29pack of candy
06:30in the trash
06:31etc.
06:32because the circuit
06:33it's simple
06:34it's I throw
06:35it goes in the sewers
06:36the sewers
06:37it goes in the river
06:38the river
06:39and so
06:4080%
06:41of the waste
06:42on the beach
06:43comes from the earth
06:44so it's
06:45it's up to us
06:46to make the effort
06:47so that it doesn't happen
06:49and what we often say
06:50to people
06:51it's ok
06:52you went for a walk
06:53you picked up waste
06:54but continue all year
06:55pick up at least
06:56three waste per day
06:57wherever you are
06:58and put it in the trash
06:59that's it
07:00it won't end
07:01at least on the beach
