00:00I consider myself the Sarah Palin of transgender people.
00:02I've gone rogue.
00:04So there are times I voted Republican.
00:06There's times I've supported this president,
00:08even with the transgender ban and everything.
00:11♪♪
00:19My name is Manny Romero.
00:20I am 24.
00:22I currently live in Sacramento, California.
00:25And in 2016, I did vote for Hillary Clinton.
00:28I haven't always been left.
00:29I grew up very conservative.
00:31You know, my grandparents were Reagan fans.
00:35And, you know, I grew up in the country.
00:36So growing up, that was kind of the norm.
00:39The first president I voted for was for Mitt Romney.
00:42I did like his tax plan.
00:44And I guess you could say I'm fiscally conservative,
00:46which is why there were some things about Trump
00:48that I did like.
00:50♪♪
00:55There were certain things where I could justify
00:57the means of the conservatives.
00:59But on a personal level, being a minority,
01:02being transgender, it doesn't work for me.
01:04The bad doesn't outweigh the good
01:07that we need to have in this country.
01:09So my personal history is conflicting.
01:11♪♪
01:18The biggest issue that no one's talking about
01:21is in my opinion, it's not that no one's talking about it.
01:24It's just that nothing gets done.
01:26For me, it's the whole gun control debate.
01:29We just keep seeing these shootings
01:31and these occurrences that happen now
01:34almost on a weekly basis.
01:35These random acts of violence that keep going around.
01:39And there's nothing being done about it.
01:40There's just a fight on the floor of Congress,
01:43and that's it.
01:43Nothing gets done because our government's broken
01:47and we're being run by a machine that's loyal to the NRA.
01:51♪♪
01:59The last thing in the last two years
02:00that's made me feel hopeless
02:02is the way that hate has spread
02:05and is allowed in this country.
02:07It reminds me back of the 1960s
02:09when firefighters and police were spraying water hoses
02:12at, you know, African-Americans in the South.
02:15I believe it's gotten back to that point
02:17where it's just so open,
02:18where we have a president and administration
02:20who has that perception that it's okay to be that way.
02:23♪♪
02:32I think what's at stake in the midterm elections
02:35this year is everything.
02:36The elections last year, in 2016,
02:41proved that anything can be a wild card.
02:43Anything can happen.
02:44California has a possibility of turning red,
02:47and that's the first in a while.
02:48There's a lot at stake to still secure our freedoms,
02:51to secure a better future for our children.
02:55♪♪
03:05Voters from the other side see me,
03:07I would say that they see me as a pariah,
03:10as one of those other freaks from California
03:13who are do-gooders and want to help everyone run our dime.
03:17But, you know, I've seen myself through their shoes.
03:20You know, I've seen the abuses of Medicaid.
03:22I understand all that.
03:24Don't get me wrong.
03:25But at the end of the day, you have to look at it like,
03:28you know, we're only here for a short time,
03:30and we have to help as many.
03:31I say it's a blessing to help people.
03:33So they see me as wanting to spend all our money,
03:37wanting to progress my socialist,
03:41LGBT conspiracy agenda, so be it.
03:46Maybe that's what I am doing, but you know what?
03:48If I'm helping someone along the way, it works.
