00:00Hettie Spencer is one of the best-known faces on the European sales circuit, so much so
00:06that she featured in our first season of On The Lead. Having managed consignments for
00:10some of the best in the business, Hettie has now struck out on her own with Spencer sales.
00:15She has launched the business by having yearlings at some of the premier sales across Europe
00:19this year, including the recently held Baden-Baden. Hettie tells us about this new chapter.
00:25So from a young age, I started off sort of riding out. I'm from Newmarket, so the home
00:32of like horse racing, really. And obviously Tassels is there. Went up to the sales from
00:40a young age and then got involved with a few big consignors and got stuck in and never
00:47really left, I guess. Most people know me for working for Jamie Roughton and also a
00:55few of the Breeze Up consignors as Con Manan. I've worked for them for mainly those three
01:00for a long time. I've worked other sort of sales when I'm free for plenty of other people
01:07as well. I've been working in it for long enough that I think if I didn't do it now,
01:15when was I going to do it? So I think it was at the right time to branch off and do my
01:21own thing when I can do most of it. You know, running a consignment for somebody is easy
01:27and I found that not challenging anymore. So this is the next step to actually put your
01:34face to a new name and give it a go, I guess. We're over in Fairy House, Orby, into the
01:42books. So yeah, what we've sort of achieved in a short period of time, it's quite taken
01:51back by the fact that I'm selling at every yearling sale, England, Ireland, Germany.
01:59I didn't expect to be doing that, that's for sure. Setting anything up is daunting for
02:07anyone and it's, you know, getting a business together and all the things that come with
02:12that and look, I'm not saying it's easy, but I feel like we're at the start of something
02:19now so I'm very happy with how it's looking and we'll just see where we go from here,
02:25I guess. I'd love to sell at, you know, the Mare's, Foals, Horses and Training. You know,
02:31I want to be a consigner that's at every sale. Next year I'd find somewhere, you know, prep
02:38a few yearlings and pin hook a few myself. I have a broodmare so things down the line
02:44will be popping up.
