00:00Even going in with a force like that, it just seemed like, you know, this was going to be
00:26a different game.
00:28It was going to be a bar fight.
00:34For those who have not had the experience of riding in an open-envy in combat, it's
00:39much like riding in a convertible Corvette down Main Street during a parade, and everyone
00:45in the parade is shooting at you.
00:46We got, you know, just came to an abrupt stop, you know, we got hit by an RPG.
00:52First split second thought is, where the hell is everybody else at?
00:57You step out and there's burning vehicles and rubble everywhere.
01:02You can hear the little birds above us zip around doing their runs.
01:08They had us pinned in there pretty good.
01:11We were taking fire from every rooftop, window, doorway, alleyway, street intersection.
01:16They kept coming in, they didn't flinch, they just kept coming at us.
01:23I didn't know half of those Rangers.
01:27I didn't know one of them by name, but they were an American soldier.
01:32They had the same uniform I had, and we weren't going home without them.
01:37Colonel David got on the battalion command net and he said, look, we're going to stay
01:41here as long as it takes to get everybody out of here.
01:45There were bad guys that were trying to prevent us from getting to that crash site, okay,
01:49from the very beginning, because once a helicopter goes down, that becomes, in military terminology,
01:56a baited ambush.
01:58It's the bait.
02:00That's the bait.
02:02Because the bad guys know, we don't leave our dead and wounded behind.
02:07We go get them.
