00:00Canada's new Prime Minister Mark Carney visited Paris on Monday to meet with French President
00:07Emmanuel Macron, seeking European support as US President Donald Trump continues to
00:12attack Canada's sovereignty and economy.
00:16Since Trump came to office, he has imposed sweeping tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminium,
00:22and repeatedly commented on turning Canada into the 51st US state, infuriating Canadians
00:27and sparking a call to boycott US products across the country.
00:32Carney said he hopes to work with France and the rest of Europe to maintain positive relations
00:37with the US.
00:38With you, Mr. President, I want to ensure that France and the whole of Europe works
00:43enthusiastically with Canada, the most European of non-European countries, determined like
00:53you to maintain the most positive possible relations with the United States.
00:58It's a powerful message.
01:00Canada's new Prime Minister Mark Carney chose France as his first foreign trip since taking
01:06office last Friday.
01:08And just as tensions are at an all-time high between Canada and the US, Carney is signalling
01:14that he wants to get closer to his European allies, including French President Emmanuel
01:19Macron.
01:20Both Macron and Carney said on Monday that it's important to continue to support Ukraine
01:25as well as European security at a time when US President Donald Trump is growing closer
01:32to Russia's President Vladimir Putin.
01:36Carney will then head off to the UK to meet with Prime Minister Keir Starmer and King
01:40Charles III, who is also Canada's head of state.
01:45Carney's itinerary signals that Canada is growing closer to its former colonial powers
01:53rather than with its traditional ally and direct neighbour, the United States.
