00:00It is beginning to seem like every day I am talking about stories which are going to negatively
00:09affect the pockets of already struggling Londoners.
00:12Lately, this has included train fare rises and water bill increases.
00:17Now it is council tax.
00:19Perhaps one of the most ironic things about this latest council tax hike announcement
00:26is that one of the boroughs not included in the maximum 4.99% increase is the Royal
00:34Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, which is of course one of the wealthiest boroughs in
00:39London.
00:40Further to this, Newham, which is one of the poorest in London, is raising council tax
00:46by 8.99% after receiving special permission to do so.
00:51That is not far from a 10% rise.
00:54Wandsworth is the only other borough staying away from that 4.99% rise, with bills expected
01:02to rise by 2%.
01:04Kensington and Chelsea is facing a 4% rise.
01:09This London announcement forms part of a nationwide announcement of council tax increases.
01:17The vast majority of councils are rising the tax by 4.99%, which as previously mentioned
01:24is the maximum threshold allowed without special permission.
01:29There is also a theme of poorer areas implementing, at the very least, the very maximum increase,
01:36often with permission to go above that 4.99% threshold and richer areas staying under.
