00:00the underrated starting pitchers.
00:02And we're going to go with this first name,
00:04and to me, underrated.
00:06But I think it speaks to the fact
00:08that there's this recency bias
00:10that everyone is so easily and quickly to forget.
00:13We're going to talk about Pablo Lopez.
00:15We're going to talk about Pablo Lopez
00:15as an underrated starting pitcher,
00:17but I don't know about you,
00:18maybe I'm an old guy,
00:20but if I come around on a draft,
00:22and I need some pitching,
00:22and Pablo Lopez is standing there,
00:24each and every time I want to hang out with Pablo Lopez,
00:27I'm going to have a good time with Pablo Lopez.
00:29Well, that's fine, but Pablo Lopez is being drafted
00:31around the 70th guy off the board.
00:34And I think it's kind of crazy.
00:36Another guy that I think is a fantasy ace.
00:38Now, people are a little frustrated with Pablo Lopez
00:41because last year,
00:42and we even talked about it in season last year,
00:44ERA was high, and it wasn't his fault,
00:46and we kept saying it's not his fault,
00:48it's the team around him,
00:50that's what's going on here.
00:51Buy low on Pablo Lopez.
00:53I can't remember how many buy low segments
00:55we did on Pablo Lopez last year.
00:56And hopefully you did,
00:57but the point we're making is,
00:59the ERA does not match the rest of the deeper numbers.
01:03ERA was 4.08 last year.
01:06The XERA was 367.
01:09The FIP was 365.
01:11And the XFIP, right, was 3.36.
01:14So that's the fielder independent pitching numbers, right?
01:16So basically everything's screaming
01:18that Pablo Lopez should have had an ERA closer to 3-3.
01:21And if he did, I think we'd be looking at Pablo Lopez
01:24probably as a top 30 overall player.
01:27But instead, we're talking about him in the late 60s,
01:29and I think that's kind of crazy.
01:31He is one year removed in 2023
01:33from having 234 strikeouts in 194 innings last year,
01:37198 strikeouts in 185 innings.
01:40I don't get it.
01:41Matt, this is still an ace,
01:43yet he's going as the 70th player in NFBC drafts.
01:46I don't understand it.
01:47He is my argument for the entire cause
01:50of why am I taking Tariq Skubal
01:54in the ninth overall pick or 10th overall pick,
01:57instead I'm looking at Pablo Lopez going,
01:59all right, I can get basically that guy.
02:01But 60, 70 picks later, it's just kind of crazy to me.
02:05So Pablo Lopez is number one on my list.
02:08Why do you think Pablo Lopez is being so,
02:10I think, underappreciated this year?
02:12So while you were talking,
02:13I kind of went off in one of those zen moments,
02:16as I tend to do.
02:18And here's what I think.
02:19I think that either A,
02:20not enough people have a working knowledge of pitching
02:23so that they can only get the brand name stuff
02:26because they might not know who's Hunter Brown,
02:28Schwellenbar, how do I pronounce that?
02:30Who do I say?
02:31Smith-Schwaver, who's that?
02:33Because pitching is deep and hitting is a bit more fun.
02:36Pitching is a bit more thinking to the average wagerer
02:39and the average fantasy player.
02:40So maybe there's that.
02:41But then there is also the fact
02:42that there are just so many shiny new toys coming out
02:45each and every season, each and every year
02:48that, again, you make fun of it.
02:49Your mother took you to Marshalls.
02:50My mother took me to Filings Basin
02:52because that same item two years ago was $90
02:58just because it's two years removed
02:59and there's a new item out now that's $180.
03:02This item is now $45.
03:04It's still a $90 item.
03:06It's called value.
03:07I'm trying to teach it to my two little kids.
03:08Pablo Lopez has value.
