Welcome back to Stick to Football, brought to you by Sky Bet!

In this jam-packed episode, Gary Neville, Roy Keane, Jill Scott, Ian Wright and Wayne Rooney dive into the biggest football stories making headlines.

The team kicks things off with a fiery debate on the Carabao Cup Final as Newcastle take on Liverpool.

Wayne Rooney shares his take on Manchester United’s young strikers and what’s really going wrong at the club. Things heat up as the group react to Liverpool’s European exit at the hands of PSG.

They also discuss the reaction to Gary’s recent interview with Sir Jim Ratcliffe and touch on the new plans for Manchester United’s stadium.
Then it’s onto the potential scrapping of relegation in the WSL and what it could mean for the women’s game.

To round things off, the team make their Super 6 predictions before answering your community questions. From their most memorable football moments to old managers, and of course, the big debate: Ireland or England for food, music and drink ahead of St. Patrick’s Day.

00:00:00Any subjects we want to discuss? United, Stadium, Liverpool going out of Europe.
00:00:05Anything else that we can think of?
00:00:08Roy saying Arsenal won't win the league next year.
00:00:11Let's see what Wright has got to say on that, maybe.
00:00:15Anything else?
00:00:17Not a lot, is there?
00:00:18Morning.
00:00:20I'm very quiet.
00:00:22Very.
00:00:23Why are they quiet? Why is Kieran quiet this morning?
00:00:26What's going on here?
00:00:27Why is Kieran quiet, Roy?
00:00:30Happens, doesn't it?
00:00:31Happens. Dead right. Great answer.
00:00:33The ups and downs of football.
00:00:35I was stood in between the PSG fans and the Liverpool fans for the penalties.
00:00:40It was so hard not to show any emotion.
00:00:42What's happening here?
00:00:43They were nuts, their fans, weren't they?
00:00:44What's happening here with the tea?
00:00:46I'm a man of routine.
00:00:47I don't like change.
00:00:48I wish I got a warning about it.
00:00:50But the afternoon tea?
00:00:51I agree.
00:00:52I agree.
00:00:53It wasn't from me at the Royal.
00:00:54I'm not knocking you out.
00:00:55Don't blame me.
00:00:56It wasn't from me either.
00:01:00Gary called up after the result last night.
00:01:02I was like, let's make a big deal out of it.
00:01:04No, no, no.
00:01:05We're better than that.
00:01:06We're better than that.
00:01:07No, you didn't.
00:01:08We're better than that.
00:01:09No.
00:01:10Be humble in victory and defeat.
00:01:11That's what I always say.
00:01:12Exactly.
00:01:13You've got a cup final coming up.
00:01:14Yeah.
00:01:15It's OK. Not bad.
00:01:16You'll be celebrating on Sunday, I think.
00:01:18High class problems, Dev.
00:01:19High class problems.
00:01:20Remember that.
00:01:21Can I give you that?
00:01:22Yeah, absolutely.
00:01:23We were at Salford last night.
00:01:26What score was it 4-0?
00:01:28We got a man sent off after about 15 minutes.
00:01:30He was off camera, so I couldn't see where they had been sent off.
00:01:32We couldn't see either.
00:01:33No, we couldn't see either.
00:01:34Was it like a retaliation time?
00:01:35Apparently so, yeah.
00:01:36The only thing I'd say at that level,
00:01:38you know when you get the extra man,
00:01:39sometimes they don't make it.
00:01:40Oh.
00:01:41You know, they don't make it out.
00:01:42But they did, to be fair.
00:01:43I thought we looked open before.
00:01:44A bit.
00:01:45But you had some chances as well.
00:01:46Sorry.
00:01:47Hey.
00:01:48What was that?
00:01:51Still do well now to get momentum back, Nev.
00:01:53I agree.
00:01:54It's our afternoon tea.
00:01:56Mmm.
00:01:58Do you like going to them fancy hotels where they give you the...
00:02:01No.
00:02:02No, you know, where they give you little sandwiches and scones.
00:02:04Do you not like that every now and again?
00:02:06You don't like that?
00:02:07Little sandwiches, what's up with you?
00:02:09I'd like a...
00:02:10Oh, yeah, yeah.
00:02:11But do you have time?
00:02:12You look like a guy that likes little sandwiches.
00:02:14Do I look like a guy that likes them?
00:02:15I'm just on about a change.
00:02:16What's up with you?
00:02:17My goodness.
00:02:18I'd just like a big bacon butty.
00:02:20All right.
00:02:21You want a hot dog outside, don't you?
00:02:23I love them hot dogs in New York.
00:02:26Full of bacteria, isn't it?
00:02:29Greasy.
00:02:30Oh, what is this?
00:02:32This is lovely.
00:02:33I'm celebrating.
00:02:34Wow.
00:02:35Apparently you're leaving the show.
00:02:37So, just give me a little...
00:02:39Well, to be fair, this wouldn't be my leaving.
00:02:42You don't have to pay for this either, Jill.
00:02:44Oh, God, are you still going on about that?
00:02:46Jill, the reason we're doing afternoon tea
00:02:48is because we heard that you were at Buckingham Palace yesterday.
00:02:51Oh, yes, I was at Buckingham Palace.
00:02:53Hey, what's going on?
00:02:54Yeah, it was like a meet and greet for a women's event.
00:02:56Oh, just for women?
00:02:57Yeah.
00:02:58Oh, right.
00:02:59No, there was a couple of guys there.
00:03:00I thought Rydie might have been there.
00:03:02What about it?
00:03:03No, no, no.
00:03:04King Charles' playlist.
00:03:05What was it?
00:03:06What was it?
00:03:07It was Kylie Minogue, that Ray, isn't it?
00:03:11Oh, yeah.
00:03:12Yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:03:13How did that get leaked?
00:03:14You just would never expect it.
00:03:15Did it get leaked from somewhere?
00:03:16No, he's put it out there.
00:03:17He's put it out there?
00:03:18Really?
00:03:19When did that go out?
00:03:20I need to see that.
00:03:21We all like a bit of Kylie.
00:03:22It was good.
00:03:24I think sometimes when you have to go in a room and network, how do you start a conversation?
00:03:28It was just women there?
00:03:29Sometimes, yeah.
00:03:30Women.
00:03:31There was a couple of guys, a couple of guys who were lovely.
00:03:33No, but in the room it was like Ruby Wax, Victoria Beckham was there, Sarah Lancashire.
00:03:39There was all these incredible people.
00:03:41But Sarah Lancashire, I really just wanted to tell her I was such a big fan.
00:03:44Happy Valley.
00:03:45You know who I mean?
00:03:46Yeah, the one that did the programme that I've...
00:03:48What's the programme called?
00:03:49Black Dove.
00:03:50She did recently.
00:03:51Yeah, amazing.
00:03:52I like that one.
00:03:53Sometimes you go, I'm a big fan.
00:03:54Just play it cool.
00:03:55You know what I mean?
00:03:56You're on the same level as these people.
00:03:57It did get a bit awkward, I know.
00:03:58That's your fault.
00:03:59No.
00:04:00What did you say?
00:04:01It's her fault.
00:04:02I'm a big fan of yours.
00:04:03Just chill out.
00:04:04I know, but yeah.
00:04:05No, Jill.
00:04:06You can say I like your work, but don't be going, oh, I'm a big fan.
00:04:10But who would you be like that with if there was one person?
00:04:13Who's there that you'd say...
00:04:14Sarah Lancashire.
00:04:15I was like...
00:04:16He's a bit like that with Ricky, when he went Ricky Watson.
00:04:17Yeah, you were.
00:04:18He's a bit like, sort of...
00:04:20And his vibe with JJ Watt.
00:04:23JJ Watt, yeah, JJ Watt.
00:04:24JJ Watt, he kind of had a little energy there.
00:04:26Yeah, but I respect him.
00:04:27Yeah, of course.
00:04:28But I wouldn't be going, oh, I love your work.
00:04:30That wouldn't be like...
00:04:32There must be someone.
00:04:33Who would you...
00:04:34Would there be anyone?
00:04:36Like, who you haven't met, who you think, oh...
00:04:41He's met Trump, I mean.
00:04:42He's met everyone.
00:04:43He's met everyone.
00:04:44Probably Denzel.
00:04:45Denzel.
00:04:46See?
00:04:47Thanks.
00:04:48Nice to see a white man mention Denzel.
00:04:50Thank you, Wes.
00:04:52Thank you, Wes.
00:04:53He's amazing.
00:04:54If I mentioned Denzel, I'd just go like...
00:05:00Oh, Denzel.
00:05:01What would you be like with Bruce?
00:05:02Have you met Bruce Springsteen?
00:05:03Would you be...
00:05:04Yeah, but you wouldn't be tripping yourself over, would you?
00:05:06No, I would just say, look, I...
00:05:07Like your work.
00:05:08I love your work, yeah.
00:05:09It's amazing.
00:05:10Yeah, but your body would go funny.
00:05:11Your body goes funny.
00:05:12It does.
00:05:13Gary, your body would go funny if you met him.
00:05:15You wouldn't just say, oh, I like your work.
00:05:17Whiffer a bit.
00:05:18Yeah, you'd go funny.
00:05:19Yeah.
00:05:20And it's a beautiful thing.
00:05:22How have you not met him?
00:05:23Because you go to, like, every concert, don't you?
00:05:25I wouldn't ask to go and meet him.
00:05:27I wouldn't say, can you get me to the backstage?
00:05:29Or can you do this for me?
00:05:30No, I wouldn't do that.
00:05:31No, but people say Gary Neville's here.
00:05:32He'd love to meet you.
00:05:33Listen to Nev.
00:05:34Listen to this fella here.
00:05:35I wouldn't want that.
00:05:36He was on the stage last week playing a guitar in some band.
00:05:39Oh, my God.
00:05:40Oh, Gary's too humble to meet Bruce.
00:05:42But he'd go on stage and go...
00:05:45We played...
00:05:46Oh, my God.
00:05:47James Bay, wasn't that?
00:05:48I think it was.
00:05:49Me and Wazza played a show with James Bay.
00:05:51So I played the guitar with James Bay and he sang with James Bay.
00:05:54What'd you sing?
00:05:55Waz?
00:05:56A charity or something?
00:05:57No.
00:05:58Is that your song?
00:05:59We're going to get hammered now.
00:06:00It was basically, we had a pre-leaving for the World Cup party in 2006.
00:06:05Oh, it was after.
00:06:06Yeah, but you knew you'd be back in two weeks.
00:06:11I was still playing.
00:06:12He was a coach.
00:06:13Oh.
00:06:14It was 2012?
00:06:15Yeah, he was a coach.
00:06:16Sorry, it was 2014 before we went to Brazil.
00:06:19We always have a party before we go.
00:06:21It was raising money for charity.
00:06:22Right.
00:06:23And I had to get up on stage and play guitar and he played...
00:06:25You had to get up to raise money or something?
00:06:28Well, it was part of the evening.
00:06:30Was you miming playing or was you actually playing?
00:06:32I was playing guitar.
00:06:33You can play guitar?
00:06:34On James Bay, when I played on Saturday night, I was...
00:06:36Miming.
00:06:37The last bit of it, I've gone to hit a high note because he's singing next to me.
00:06:42Hiding me a little bit.
00:06:43And he stopped singing and I've hit this high note.
00:06:46How was your high note?
00:06:47It went high.
00:06:48What song are you in?
00:06:50Hold Back The River.
00:06:51It's a good song.
00:06:53You're just trying to create a bit of spirit that you didn't have.
00:06:56That's what teams do.
00:06:57They pretend we're in it together but really you're not.
00:07:00It's false.
00:07:01If you have spirit together, you have it.
00:07:03You don't need to go and create silly music.
00:07:06You were good at a charity, Michael Carrick's dinner the other day.
00:07:11You weren't singing again.
00:07:12No.
00:07:13No, I got stitched on me.
00:07:14I got stitched.
00:07:15Gil's presenting and he got me on stage.
00:07:20Did you know you was going to get called up?
00:07:22Show some respect to him.
00:07:24Wait, can I just say something?
00:07:25But you wanted a quiet night, didn't you?
00:07:26It'd be nice to go to a charity function and just have a quiet night and relax.
00:07:29No, but on the script, you know, it gets updated live.
00:07:32It was like, don't get Wayne up on stage, but it hadn't updated on the iPad.
00:07:36So they were like, what were the...
00:07:38It was a dinner, wasn't it, with you?
00:07:40It was a dinner with me and Michael, yeah.
00:07:41And Kyle, who I was with, didn't get the live script.
00:07:44So he's like, come up on the stage, Wayne.
00:07:46And I was trying to protect you, going, he might not want to come up.
00:07:49And then next thing, he comes bounding up and he's like...
00:07:51Once he called me out, I couldn't not get up.
00:07:53And then he went, I'll throw in a night out as well after the show.
00:07:57That's what happens when you can't help it.
00:07:59You know, two people are bidding against each other.
00:08:02And then he went, we'll just take both of you.
00:08:04So it was good.
00:08:05And Michael asked me to do it and put me on the spot again.
00:08:08Jeez.
00:08:09Once you're on stage, it's fun for everyone.
00:08:11Once you're on stage.
00:08:12Fair game.
00:08:13That's good cause.
00:08:14Yeah, always.
00:08:15Afternoon tea.
00:08:16You'll like this.
00:08:19It's the sort of thing that you'll have been doing at Buckingham Palace yesterday, Jill.
00:08:22We didn't get it.
00:08:23We got a little sandwich.
00:08:24Wow.
00:08:25Wow.
00:08:26It's all very...
00:08:27Have you made this?
00:08:29It's all very leavened, thank you.
00:08:30It's lovely.
00:08:31Thank you very much.
00:08:32All fresh.
00:08:33Smells nice.
00:08:34Smells lovely.
00:08:36Thank you so much.
00:08:37You didn't prepare me for this.
00:08:39I didn't know it was going to happen.
00:08:40Here we go.
00:08:41See, this is what we do.
00:08:42It's eight o'clock in the morning.
00:08:44Eight o'clock in the morning for a prawn sandwich.
00:08:46I'm going to have to have a sausage roll.
00:08:48Jill, two questions on Buckingham Palace, because I've never been.
00:08:50Uh-huh.
00:08:51What's it like inside?
00:08:52Amazing.
00:08:53It's massive.
00:08:54The decor, the paintings.
00:08:55Unbelievable.
00:08:56Amazing, yeah.
00:08:57Have you got an award?
00:08:58Have you already?
00:08:59MBE, but I didn't...
00:09:00It was through COVID, so I never got to go to the palace to collect it.
00:09:03It came in the post.
00:09:05I got one of them slips, saying collected it at the sorting office,
00:09:09and it was my MBA.
00:09:10So I was just like this at the sorting office.
00:09:13Proudest day of my life.
00:09:15Oh, no.
00:09:16Did you get...
00:09:17You got yours at Buckingham Palace.
00:09:19That's good.
00:09:20Have you got an MBE, Raja?
00:09:21OB now.
00:09:22Yes.
00:09:23MBE and OB.
00:09:24Yeah.
00:09:25Have you got stuff?
00:09:26Have you got anything over the table?
00:09:27You got anything yet, Wes?
00:09:28No.
00:09:29Not even for your music stuff, then?
00:09:31Why do you all get hung up on all that stuff?
00:09:33What the...
00:09:34Yeah.
00:09:35Can I have a tea, please?
00:09:36It's a good day out, though, isn't it?
00:09:38It is a good day out.
00:09:40So have you been twice?
00:09:41Yeah.
00:09:42Yeah.
00:09:43It's funny, the last time I went,
00:09:44Johnny Evans was there getting an MBE.
00:09:46Ah.
00:09:47Yeah.
00:09:48Was your contribution to football writing?
00:09:49Yes.
00:09:50And films.
00:09:51And...
00:09:54Chicken advert.
00:09:55Yeah.
00:09:56Yeah.
00:09:57Yeah.
00:09:58Yeah.
00:09:59Yeah.
00:10:00Yeah.
00:10:02The amount of people I inspired with my chicken dance.
00:10:07But even all the times you sent off and smashed the referee's dressing room open?
00:10:11No, no, no.
00:10:12They didn't take that into...
00:10:13No, but that's part of the journey.
00:10:14That was your recovery.
00:10:15Yeah, part of the journey.
00:10:16Part of the journey.
00:10:17No, no, no.
00:10:18That was all part of the journey.
00:10:19They just kind of...
00:10:20They just saw the goals in the chips.
00:10:22That's what they were interested in.
00:10:24Not the referee's room.
00:10:26Not the referee's report.
00:10:27The referee's report.
00:10:28Didn't read that, did you?
00:10:30Do you know what I think about MBEs?
00:10:31Go on.
00:10:32Is that it's...
00:10:35They've made an absolute farce of it.
00:10:37With certain decisions that they've made.
00:10:38Which takes away from the actual people.
00:10:40And so if they're you two around this table, they're deserving of them.
00:10:43For what you've done.
00:10:44But there are some strange decisions.
00:10:45Yeah.
00:10:46One of our friends has just got one.
00:10:47Well, Colleen's mum's friend, Diane.
00:10:50She's got one for work with children and stuff.
00:10:53Yeah, community.
00:10:54Exactly.
00:10:55Yeah.
00:10:56Where you can say it's really deserved.
00:10:58Yeah, definitely.
00:10:59Just as they're all leaving the stadium.
00:11:01The PSG fans are there celebrating.
00:11:03I felt like I grew like 10 feet.
00:11:05I was just walking around the field.
00:11:07It was so good.
00:11:08Is there a way back with this squad?
00:11:10No.
00:11:11I think 10, 15 players need to leave the club.
00:11:13You might get one or two half chances.
00:11:15You better take them.
00:11:16Make the keeper save it.
00:11:17I've not seen him get the ball.
00:11:19Try and take people on and really bust them.
00:11:21Try to get a shot off out of nowhere.
00:11:23I rung up on the former players.
00:11:24One, the food one.
00:11:25Then the Ashworth one.
00:11:26Because I thought, they're not really good.
00:11:29They're not right then.
00:11:30They'll be blocking your number.
00:11:32You're on stick to football.
00:11:33What happened this morning?
00:11:34We thought you were coming in.
00:11:35You know what?
00:11:36I'm not that fussed because you know why?
00:11:38What?
00:11:39Because we've won the league.

00:13:02I was thinking this morning coming in,
00:13:04it's probably just for you actually, right?
00:13:06You said on Sunday you didn't think Arsenal would win the league next year,
00:13:09there's no evidence of it.
00:13:11I didn't think it was a wild statement,
00:13:13I just wondered what you thought about the fact that...
00:13:16Can I just add something to that?
00:13:18Because I look at some of the games this year where you're going,
00:13:20you're looking for evidence to suggest a team can get over the line in certain games.
00:13:23United home in the cup this year was a big game for Arsenal, couldn't get it done.
00:13:26Two legs against Newcastle, didn't score a goal.
00:13:30So, there's certain games you look at Arsenal and go,
00:13:32are they really going to step up?
00:13:36I just don't see it.
00:13:38In the current climate of what's going on,
00:13:40I can't see us stepping up.
00:13:42If you want to play against a team at the moment at home who are lacking in confidence
00:13:46and obviously you've got one player who can pull them out of danger,
00:13:50then you'd want to play against United.
00:13:51We couldn't break them down.
00:13:53The mid-block, the low-block is a problem for us.
00:13:55So, we had to call up Wazza this morning
00:13:57because Carragher rung up and said he couldn't come on.
00:14:00So, thanks for standing in for Carragher.
00:14:03Going out of Europe, he obviously couldn't.
00:14:07Was he at the game?
00:14:09Was he in the cup?
00:14:11I've seen a picture of him today in the cup,
00:14:14he was pitch-side when I first got there.
00:14:16What was he doing?
00:14:19Caribbean boots.
00:14:21He didn't fancy him,
00:14:23not to get true,
00:14:24but he didn't fancy him to win it anyway.
00:14:25Yeah, but you like that with your own team.
00:14:27You feel nervous because, let's face it,
00:14:29Liverpool at Anfield at this stage of the Champions League,
00:14:33they're normally incredible.
00:14:35And Pente shoot-outs good.
00:14:37They are exciting.
00:14:38The camera angle and both sets of fans.
00:14:40Liverpool obviously, it was good.
00:14:42I love the way they got behind the goal.
00:14:44The goal looked tiny from that angle, doesn't it?
00:14:46It did.
00:14:47That's the keeper from PSG.
00:14:49Of course we saw him for a course.
00:14:51It was so good yesterday at the end.
00:14:53When PSG went 1-0 up,
00:14:55all of a sudden I started getting abused.
00:14:57Liverpool fans started abusing me.
00:14:59But then at the end of the game,
00:15:01just as they're all leaving the stadium,
00:15:03the PSG fans are there celebrating.
00:15:05I felt like I grew 10 feet.
00:15:07I was just walking around Anfield.
00:15:09It was so good.
00:15:10You had to game-win last night.
00:15:12I did.
00:15:13Any good lines?
00:15:14Some of the Liverpool lines are funny.
00:15:17The same one, Jones.
00:15:21He can't repeat them.
00:15:25You know when you're at home
00:15:27and you're watching a penalty shoot-out,
00:15:29there's always one person when they walk
00:15:31and you say, I don't fancy him.
00:15:33I don't fancy him.
00:15:34I was on a WhatsApp group.
00:15:36When people saw our man, Nunez, walking down,
00:15:38I must have had three or four people saying,
00:15:40he needs to score this.
00:15:43What did you do before penalties?
00:15:45I started changing the runs.
00:15:47What about Dembele's penalty?
00:15:49He started to do the side.
00:15:51He started the other side
00:15:53but then took it because he's left-footed.
00:15:55It's brilliant.
00:15:57He started the other side
00:15:59because he's left-footed
00:16:01and then he ended up taking it with his right foot.
00:16:03I don't know about the players
00:16:05that come on as subs
00:16:07and then to obviously take a penalty.
00:16:09But I always think,
00:16:11if you've had a really good game,
00:16:14we all know you can miss,
00:16:16but at least you had a good game.
00:16:18I do feel sorry for the lads that come on.
00:16:20Debala in the World Cup.
00:16:22He came off the bench
00:16:24and scored his penalty.
00:16:26Maybe you're fresh.
00:16:28The first thing you're doing
00:16:30is taking a penalty in a World Cup final.
00:16:32Big blow for Liverpool.
00:16:34Sometimes I think there's an acceptable way
00:16:36to go out of Europe.
00:16:38I was really impressed with PSG.
00:16:40Sometimes you watch a team,
00:16:43young, hungry, playing good football.
00:16:45I thought it was an acceptable way
00:16:47to go out of Europe in some ways.
00:16:49I thought Virg was very magnanimous
00:16:51in his interview afterwards.
00:16:53They said over the two games
00:16:55they spoke well
00:16:57about what they've got to do now.
00:16:59You can imagine Virg in his dressing room.
00:17:01That's gone. We've got to start focusing
00:17:03on the next ten games.
00:17:05Don't overreact.
00:17:07I didn't overreact after the games.
00:17:09If you've got a final,
00:17:11ten points can't delete.
00:17:13His interview where we're finished as teams
00:17:15needs to have a good long-haired look at itself.
00:17:17Too many Rolexes, too many fast cars.
00:17:19That was the usual address
00:17:21coming out of Europe.
00:17:23Is that what you did in the interview?
00:17:25You try and hang around it
00:17:27in your own dressing room sometimes.
00:17:29Keep people under your toes.
00:17:31I think we were 12 points clear at the time.
00:17:33Yeah, we were.
00:17:35You were 12 points clear
00:17:37and you still said that?
00:17:40I just met a couple of defenders we needed.
00:17:42He won't answer.
00:17:44Are you OK?
00:17:46You're on stick to football.
00:17:48What happened this morning? We thought you were coming in.
00:17:50No, I'm doing the Champions League.
00:17:52I'm going down there, don't worry about it.
00:17:54Are you all excited?
00:17:56I think Liverpool have gone out, have you?
00:17:58No, we're actually the opposite.
00:18:00We're being very magnanimous.
00:18:02We're saying it was a good game
00:18:04and an acceptable way to go out.
00:18:06Give us your little synopsis
00:18:08I only see one half of the game
00:18:10because I was in the Kop
00:18:12so I could only see it when I was attacking the Kop
00:18:14and Liverpool played very well when they were doing that.
00:18:16But I think Paris Saint-Germain were the better team
00:18:18over two legs.
00:18:20I think Liverpool were a little bit unlucky
00:18:22to get PSG considering they were top of the league
00:18:24with the new format
00:18:26so they've had a little bit of bad luck there
00:18:28but best team won.
00:18:30I hope they go on and win it now
00:18:32and new winners, wouldn't they? PSG never won it before.
00:18:34You sound very happy.
00:18:37I'm not that fussed because you know why?
00:18:39What?
00:18:41Because we've won the league.
00:18:43Right.
00:18:45Game off, game off.
00:18:47I've had enough of that.
00:18:49Do you feel more sorry for Newcastle now
00:18:51because do you think Liverpool have definitely
00:18:53got that trophy?
00:18:55I can't see
00:18:57Virgil van Dijk and Mo Salah
00:18:59not being winners on Sunday.
00:19:01You look at two players
00:19:03and you just think who's going to take that off them
00:19:06but it is a setback for them.
00:19:08It is a setback for them.
00:19:10It didn't happen last year
00:19:12when they got out of the FA Cup
00:19:14in the same week.
00:19:16I think they had a week
00:19:18where the season just fell apart
00:19:20so hopefully that happens again.
00:19:22What do you think
00:19:24of the atmosphere?
00:19:26Because I thought
00:19:28it was one of those where
00:19:30even when the opposing team
00:19:32at Liverpool do well
00:19:34they crank it up.
00:19:36I didn't think the atmosphere was great for them.
00:19:38A lot of people know a lot more about Liverpool
00:19:40than me but there is a suggestion
00:19:42from some of the hardcore fans
00:19:44that the atmosphere has just softened a little bit
00:19:46with different types of fans
00:19:48coming in and obviously
00:19:50grounds got bigger but
00:19:52Kara would know more about that than me.
00:19:54That's my first game
00:19:56I've been around for a European game
00:19:58and I thought it would be a lot better.
00:20:00What were the Liverpool fans like when they lost?
00:20:03To be fair
00:20:05they stayed there, they were singing
00:20:07they clapped the team off
00:20:09so they were good to be fair.
00:20:11The PSG fans were mad
00:20:13weren't they?
00:20:15Was it cold last night because they all had the tops off?
00:20:17It was freezing.
00:20:19Apparently you don't feel it when you win.
00:20:21You don't watch me
00:20:23but you watch the lads.
00:20:25Maybe if you took your top off.
00:20:27You'd have to go for a walk.
00:20:29Paris Saint-Germain could win it.
00:20:31What do you think about a couple of years ago
00:20:33they bring Luis Enrique in and he says
00:20:35I'm just not having this superstar mentality
00:20:37I'm just going to build a team.
00:20:39Young hungry players who can all contribute
00:20:41and he looks like he's on his way to building
00:20:43a hell of a side.
00:20:45It's good to see.
00:20:47Ousmane Dembele's journey
00:20:49went for a load of money to Barcelona
00:20:51Was it over 100 million?
00:20:53140 odd wasn't it?
00:20:55To the point where you think wow it's not happening for him
00:20:57he went out on loan
00:21:00He was a bit younger
00:21:02but his abilities have never been in question
00:21:04so for him to be there now
00:21:06out of the shadow of all of
00:21:08it must be brilliant
00:21:10for that team.
00:21:12They were saying last night on the comms
00:21:14that he wasn't a good pro
00:21:16and I thought they were going to say drinking
00:21:18and it was late night gaming
00:21:20or something
00:21:22It's a problem though
00:21:24Really?
00:21:26It's a big problem for young people now
00:21:29and players to be fair
00:21:31because of that time they have
00:21:33they play until 2 or 3 in the morning
00:21:35they're all playing together
00:21:37and it happened with England quite a bit
00:21:39where the lads would stay up all night
00:21:41I just think your mind and your concentration
00:21:43A lot of teams are doing it now
00:21:45I think you end up being like a zombie
00:21:47it ends up damaging you
00:21:49it makes you more tired
00:21:51it affects you
00:21:53It's not just a case of
00:21:55it's scientifically proven
00:21:57Is a card school better then?
00:21:59I think players will find
00:22:01card school
00:22:03I was listening to Elon Musk
00:22:05Why?
00:22:07I was listening to a podcast
00:22:09and he was talking about how
00:22:11playing the Playstation actually improves
00:22:13your output
00:22:15He's coming out of his mouth
00:22:17He's got chairs in there
00:22:19I'm talking about if you played half an hour or an hour
00:22:21You're playing for 7 hours
00:22:23Especially the game you're playing
00:22:26What game are you playing?
00:22:28Do you use a play computer?
00:22:30I've never played a game
00:22:32I like the golf
00:22:34Do the golf is good
00:22:36FIFA
00:22:38I've not either
00:22:40I've done the Formula 1
00:22:42The only time I've done it
00:22:44is when the kids are playing them games
00:22:46on the iPad
00:22:48I've never played games like that
00:22:50I think it does
00:22:52Only one with kids
00:22:54It can't be good
00:22:56Physically or mentally
00:23:25That's where therapy comes in

00:24:11Right, United
00:24:13Obviously yesterday they announced a new stadium
00:24:15What did you think of the stadium?
00:24:17I liked it
00:24:19That's the one that went up
00:24:21I expect something of real stature
00:24:23because it's United
00:24:25They've got to try and replace
00:24:27Old Trafford
00:24:29They're going to get the best
00:24:31They're probably the best architects and designers
00:24:33It's going to be amazing
00:24:35There's a good PR for United
00:24:37Even your piece and the stadium
00:24:39They're smack with the timing
00:24:41You did so well with that
00:24:43What do you think of Jim Ratcliffe
00:24:45in terms of obviously
00:24:47I think the thing for me is that he's fronting up
00:24:49or Chelsea's or United's
00:24:51obviously for 20 years
00:24:53even Tottenham's, we never hear from them
00:24:55at any point, in good or bad times actually
00:24:57but we actually, at least he's standing up and speaking
00:24:59From the business side of it you think
00:25:01he knows what he's talking about
00:25:03He's had to though
00:25:05On one hand they're getting rid of loads of people
00:25:07then they're going to spend two billion
00:25:09I still think they can look after people
00:25:11a little bit better
00:25:13but when he started talking about football
00:25:15he lost me a little bit
00:25:17They still should be doing better
00:25:19I would disagree with him on that
00:25:21but it was nice of him to front up
00:25:23I'll tell you what was uncomfortable
00:25:25is the way that he
00:25:27had to
00:25:29all uncomfortable having to
00:25:31protect the Glazers
00:25:33You have to a little bit when you're in business
00:25:35I got that, I understood that
00:25:37Ultimately he did through things that he said
00:25:39criticise them
00:25:41but he couldn't directly criticise them
00:25:43so when he says that basically there's been mismanagement
00:25:45for ten years and we're running out of cash
00:25:47he's not blaming himself is he?
00:25:49He's saying look what happened before
00:25:51He actually pointed towards the two management teams before at one point
00:25:53so I think he did indirectly criticise them
00:25:55but could you
00:25:57he's not going to do that is he?
00:25:59You wouldn't expect him to do it but again
00:26:01I can't stop thinking about
00:26:03the fact that they've really got away
00:26:05with
00:26:07what they've got away with
00:26:09and then not only when it's got to a place where
00:26:11because he said something
00:26:13they would have run out of money by November
00:26:15so you're talking about
00:26:17so they would have run out by November
00:26:19if he doesn't come in, what would have happened?
00:26:21You've got all that
00:26:23but that's still no excuse for some of the performances
00:26:25It's no excuse
00:26:27As a player you don't really
00:26:29You're not getting involved are you?
00:26:31I think you can't use that as an excuse
00:26:33He's on about saving money at the club
00:26:35but we know that ex-players
00:26:37a lot of ex-players have been treated to fun
00:26:39they had available staff who've been there for years
00:26:41and on one hand he's still treating them badly
00:26:43and I understand it's a business and you've got to try and make the right decisions
00:26:45and then the next day
00:26:47we're building a stadium for £2 billion
00:26:49for our billion fans around the world
00:26:51but don't forget you have to show loyalty
00:26:53to people who have been there for years
00:26:55and I'm including the ex-players fund
00:26:57I haven't seen any of that
00:26:59It's not for you
00:27:01What was really good
00:27:03when you mentioned about the £40,000
00:27:05and Bruno and Aaron Maguire
00:27:07the way he answered that
00:27:09that's pretty good
00:27:11it's like why wouldn't no one have come up with that idea
00:27:13are they afraid to say it to him
00:27:15or is he so
00:27:17he doesn't want to hear it
00:27:19so why is something so simple
00:27:21where he even on the interview said
00:27:23yeah that's pretty good
00:27:25how come no one's gone to him with that?
00:27:27It was quite a simple suggestion
00:27:29no offence but it was quite a simple suggestion
00:27:31he was like oh no one said that
00:27:33I was like because you said about two people
00:27:35going to do a charity dinner
00:27:37£40,000
00:27:39Look it's difficult running a football club
00:27:41you do make mistakes
00:27:43you're sat managed when you shouldn't do
00:27:45you appoint people that you maybe think
00:27:47why are they appointing them
00:27:49I get that completely I've been there myself
00:27:51but I think there are certain things
00:27:53and that's why I rang up the club
00:27:55when the former players thing and the food thing
00:27:57I rang up the comms people
00:27:59as a role I'm a broadcaster
00:28:01I'm entitled to ring up the comms department
00:28:03and say look what's the story on this
00:28:05they're not right then
00:28:07they're not right
00:28:09you ring up and say they're not right
00:28:11I'm sorry it's just not right
00:28:13there's a solution around this
00:28:15you can't be spending a million pound a month
00:28:17on one player and taking out food for staff
00:28:19I don't think you can do that
00:28:21I think optically it's terrible
00:28:23I think £40,000 for the ex-players
00:28:25them ex-players are talking about players
00:28:27from the 60s and 70s
00:28:29they're funding some of the United players
00:28:31from the 60s and 70s funerals
00:28:33maybe 10 times, 8 times, 15 times
00:28:35who live in Manchester
00:28:37and they can't afford the funerals
00:28:39that's what they're funding
00:28:41they're not funding Wayne Rooney
00:28:43and Gary Neville's petrol for the cars
00:28:45this is players from 50 years ago
00:28:47that are struggling to live
00:28:49but even gestures a few times a year
00:28:51and I just don't mean United
00:28:53I'm sure there's lots of clubs out there
00:28:55that don't treat ex-players
00:28:57players who fall on hard times
00:28:59two or three times a year bring them to a match
00:29:01do they not do that?
00:29:03I don't know but I don't know if they reach out
00:29:05to a lot of ex-players
00:29:07three or four occasions if you want to come to Old Trafford
00:29:09have a deal with your family, your children, your grandkids
00:29:11a little treat, just a bit of respect
00:29:13but having said that
00:29:15when you look at the new stadium and the plans
00:29:17it would be fantastic wouldn't it
00:29:19for the area
00:29:21for the supporters
00:29:23I've been going on about it for 7 or 8 years
00:29:25it actually means more to me
00:29:27it sounds crazy this
00:29:29but it means as much to me as the football side
00:29:31because the idea that United as a football club
00:29:33in stature terms
00:29:35the training ground, the stadium
00:29:37that's got to be the best
00:29:39because you can control that
00:29:41you can't control Pep Guardiola at City
00:29:43or Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool
00:29:45or somebody doing something amazing elsewhere
00:29:47and you think we've fallen behind for a year or two
00:29:49and we're second, third, fifth
00:29:51and we can't drop to 15th
00:29:53but the stadium is always in your control
00:29:55especially when they're looking at other stadiums
00:29:57Barcelona
00:29:59Barcelona's obviously going to be amazing
00:30:01so that's hard to stomach
00:30:03when you see these other clubs making progress
00:30:05on and off the pitch and United have been left behind
00:30:07but it looks like
00:30:09at least there's a plan there
00:30:11it's not like 10 years
00:30:135, 6, 7 years
00:30:15Has he got like £16 billion
00:30:17I was thinking, he's sitting there stressed
00:30:19speaking to you all, just go and live on an island
00:30:21and enjoy your life
00:30:23There was an element of that when I asked him
00:30:25Why are you doing this?
00:30:27How old is he now though?
00:30:29He could have retired years ago, it's not about money
00:30:31it's about the challenge and legacies
00:30:33and you have to admire that
00:30:35He's a fan isn't he? He feels like he's in a position
00:30:37where he can make a change
00:30:39There's business people out there worth billions
00:30:41but it's all about the next deal isn't it
00:30:43He's 72 years of age and he's still got fire in his belly
00:30:45Absolutely, that's good to see
00:30:47We've not heard from you for a month or two
00:30:49What do you make of the team?
00:30:51You've watched quite a few of the games
00:30:53Is there a way back with this squad?
00:30:55No, I don't think so
00:30:57They look lost
00:30:59I think they look scared
00:31:01Amarin said that right at the start
00:31:03They're scared to make a mistake
00:31:05I've seen the bit Rui done on Bruno
00:31:07I do think he's the one who
00:31:09keeps producing
00:31:11He's noisier at times as well
00:31:13throwing his arms up and all that
00:31:15but he's the one who keeps producing
00:31:17but it needs massive changes
00:31:19to the squad
00:31:21I know obviously they can't
00:31:23but I think 10 or 15 players
00:31:25need to leave the club
00:31:27I think
00:31:29I'm interested
00:31:3110 or 15 players is almost like
00:31:33a massive clear out
00:31:35Obviously they can't do that
00:31:37but I think there's a mentality there
00:31:39where it's not going right
00:31:41This player will pass it on to him
00:31:43he'll pass it on to him
00:31:45and no one's taking responsibility
00:31:47Which players would you keep then?
00:31:49Which players would you hang your hat on
00:31:51and say for 3 or 4 years
00:31:53I said this last year
00:31:55and it's the same again
00:31:57I keep Bruno and Mainu
00:31:59the young ones
00:32:01but I think there's just a culture there
00:32:03where it's too easy
00:32:05for them to lose games
00:32:07and then you see them coming out
00:32:09onto the next one
00:32:11and all this rubbish
00:32:13Just show it on the pitch
00:32:15show some character and fight on the pitch
00:32:17It doesn't seem to be that
00:32:19teams lose a game
00:32:21so let's just move on
00:32:23It's bad, it's bad watching
00:32:25It hurts obviously
00:32:27Being from Liverpool
00:32:29but spending so many years at Man United
00:32:31I want the club to do well
00:32:33I've got my kids in the academy there
00:32:35and watching it hurts
00:32:37Bruno, Garnaccio and Mainu
00:32:39You'd struggle to keep the rest
00:32:41Talk to me about
00:32:43the two strikers, the young strikers
00:32:45or the youngish
00:32:47in the Premier League terms
00:32:49in the scale of the club they're playing at
00:32:51If United had Harry Kane up front
00:32:53and they were strikers
00:32:55number 2 and 3
00:32:57would they still be accepted?
00:32:59Do you think you could get something out of those two?
00:33:01Or do you think there's nothing to help?
00:33:03Just one question
00:33:05Sorry?
00:33:07We keep talking about
00:33:09obviously strikers, their confidence
00:33:11I get that 100%
00:33:13He's got a chance at this level
00:33:15All he needs to do is take a half decent first touch
00:33:17So is that all down to confidence?
00:33:19I thought he could have took it first time
00:33:21Maybe, or he just took a touch away
00:33:23Even after the touch, you see he takes his touch
00:33:25and then he looks up at the goal
00:33:27He'll tell you when you're in that position
00:33:29you know where the goal is
00:33:31I think it is confidence with him
00:33:33But he's not got a good goal scoring record
00:33:35previously Wayne, it's not as if he's got a proven track record
00:33:37When you haven't scored
00:33:39you start overthinking everything
00:33:41But is that just confidence?
00:33:43Was that actually just lack of quality?
00:33:45You know what it is?
00:33:47You know what he's trying to do Wayne?
00:33:49Exactly what he's trying to do
00:33:51Because you can feel the pressure
00:33:53so you're trying to make sure you get everything right
00:33:55so you can get your shot off
00:33:57You're not going to get that time like that
00:33:59I was thinking of this the other day
00:34:01When we were playing
00:34:03and then you've got myself, Sahar, Ronaldo
00:34:05then you've got Tevez, Berbatov
00:34:07you've got top strikers
00:34:09Where Hoyland
00:34:11and Zeke are at now
00:34:13is probably when I first joined the club
00:34:15where you've got yourself, Rudon, then you've got David Bellion
00:34:17They're probably that quality
00:34:19of what Bellion was
00:34:21So they're not going to lead
00:34:23Manchester United at this moment in time
00:34:25to go on to the next level
00:34:27They need to be dripped into it
00:34:29to then try and become that players
00:34:31because they're not at that level yet
00:34:33Can they get there? Hopefully they can
00:34:35But they paid 70 odd million
00:34:3770 odd million for a player to be a back-up player
00:34:39That's the way it's gone
00:34:41Not for a back-up player
00:34:43I think there should be back-up strikers
00:34:45You'd have 2 or 3 main men and go
00:34:47We'll bring in for the League Cup or whatever it might be
00:34:49or a European game that we're already through
00:34:51but you're trying to hang out on these lads
00:34:53and we talk about cutting edge
00:34:55If you're not scoring goals, we can only go back to the
00:34:57teams we played in with the strikers
00:34:59You also, even on a really bad day
00:35:01you still score one or two goals
00:35:03United and Arsenal, 1-1
00:35:05Ipswich scored 2 at Old Trafford a few weeks ago
00:35:07Yet, the expectation
00:35:09You must believe that
00:35:11even on a bad day, United will score 2 goals
00:35:13But how many chances are they creating?
00:35:15You're saying about the touch
00:35:17Dembele, yesterday, there was a couple where he took a heavy touch
00:35:19but then obviously they're getting so many chances
00:35:21Whereas Hoyland and the Arsenal game
00:35:23there wasn't that many chances
00:35:25If you only get them 1 and 2
00:35:27it's got to be perfect
00:35:29As a striker as well, sometimes
00:35:31you can look at it and it is a situation
00:35:33where you're not getting enough service
00:35:35At some stage, you can get the ball
00:35:37and you do something
00:35:39But do you try and do too much?
00:35:41When you look at it, they're not trying to do too much
00:35:43Hoyland, I've not seen him
00:35:45get the ball, try and take people on
00:35:47and really bust them, try to get a shot off
00:35:49out of nowhere, edge of the box
00:35:51So how long do you wait?
00:35:53You could say for a lot of strikers
00:35:55who go to Man United, it's a tough job obviously
00:35:57you've got to score goals, how does it compare to football?
00:35:59How long do you wait for these lads?
00:36:01Just give him another 12
00:36:03While you're waiting, your team is losing
00:36:05He's obviously recognised that
00:36:07I think it was really interesting when he played Man U
00:36:09up top in January
00:36:11I think that was him saying
00:36:13listen, I need a forward in here
00:36:15Of course, he was trying to make a point to the board
00:36:17maybe that come the summer
00:36:19How do you feel as a striker?
00:36:21How do you feel as a striker though
00:36:23when a midfielder starts?
00:36:25It's the end really, isn't it?
00:36:27Yeah, that's what I mean
00:36:29You know, I feel for him
00:36:31because like you mentioned earlier
00:36:33he's somebody that's supposed to be a number
00:36:353 maximum striker
00:36:37He came in with 9 goals from Atlanta
00:36:39something like that, so you're talking about
00:36:41somebody who's coming in with 9 goals
00:36:43and he's straight into the Manchester United's
00:36:45first team to start scoring goals
00:36:47It's a lot of pressure and I think that
00:36:49it's weighing very heavy on him
00:36:51Can I tell you, when you play a sign for Man United
00:36:53and I'm including Bruin and all these boys
00:36:55and they talk about signing big fees and big contracts
00:36:57but there's responsibility
00:36:59so you can't just sit back down a couple of months later
00:37:01and go, he needs confidence
00:37:03he needs to run the games
00:37:05I was trying to make the point the other day
00:37:07but what are you going to do about it?
00:37:09What is the player going to do about it?
00:37:11So you might say the other day, do you know what?
00:37:13You're going to get your 15 minutes against Arsenal
00:37:15and you might get one or two half chances
00:37:17you better take them, make the keeper save it
00:37:19so you can't come off the pitch after a game as a striker
00:37:21and go, I'm down on confidence
00:37:23Some players only get 2 minutes on the pitch
00:37:25I did 5 or 6 minutes on the pitch
00:37:27but instead of coming on and going, listen
00:37:295 or 6 minutes, everyone wants longer
00:37:31Listen, maybe that was a bad example
00:37:33but I would come on with the attitude
00:37:35I'm watching the game, I get up to speed
00:37:37and when Hyland gets that chance, I'm looking
00:37:39and going, that's just about a half decent touch
00:37:41and if the keeper saves it
00:37:43like the chance later on where it was blocked
00:37:45I go, I've no problem with that, the defender made a good block
00:37:47but that's your chance to score a goal
00:37:49So you go, it's confidence
00:37:51So what, you wait another 6 months?
00:37:53You don't take chances as good as that
00:37:55in such a big game
00:37:57He's been lucky, there's no one really there to come in
00:37:59and take his place
00:38:01But is that a problem? When you think of the lads we play
00:38:03I know Brilliant, obviously Yorkie, Corley, Teddy
00:38:05at that time, there was 3 or 4
00:38:07so they were looking probably going, I better take my chances
00:38:09These lads are chomping at the bit on the sideline
00:38:11and coming on, not coming on going
00:38:13I'm disappointed, I'm going to come on
00:38:15I'm taking the place
00:38:17If you're like Yorkie, Teddy
00:38:19you're on the pitch and you know that Solskjaer's on the bench
00:38:21he could come on and score a hat-trick
00:38:23He did 4, he got 4
00:38:25So that's the kind of thing that makes you realise
00:38:27I've got to make sure that I'm bang on it
00:38:29They haven't got that, a lot of teams haven't got that
00:38:31But you look at the player, that's what I'm talking about
00:38:33At some stage you have to look in the mirror and go
00:38:35What am I going to do about it? Do I work a bit harder?
00:38:37Do I knock people over?
00:38:39I've met him a few times
00:38:41Hoyland
00:38:43He seems like a real nice
00:38:45hard-working lad
00:38:47I'd like to think that he is doing that
00:38:49I can imagine him being hard-working
00:38:51I think he will be doing that
00:38:53Well if he's doing that then the pressure's too much for him
00:38:55I'm not saying he's none of them things
00:38:57I tell you what, his service to him
00:38:59I mean I know he got a chance the other day
00:39:01but I have to say, the quality into him as well
00:39:03is absolutely appalling and he's got no one alongside him
00:39:05In the last few games he's played with Zersey and Ericsson
00:39:07alongside him or he's playing with
00:39:09Never get all that but there still comes a responsibility
00:39:11on the player to say
00:39:13you've come for big money, there's a big responsibility
00:39:15You have to carry that
00:39:17That's part of playing for a big club
00:39:19I'd say the best forward's Harry Kane
00:39:21is the best example of it
00:39:23where he mightn't be in the game
00:39:25for 89 minutes
00:39:27but you know when he gets that one chance
00:39:29I think he's going to score
00:39:31Right, let's do Super 6
00:39:33Right then
00:39:37My confidence is down to this
00:39:39Are you Hoyland?
00:39:41Honestly
00:39:43Well you've had enough chances
00:39:45And you should always look in the mirror first
00:39:47Yes Ben, come on, get on with it
00:39:49Go on Ben
00:39:51Okay Gary
00:39:53Thanks for that
00:39:55Last week Gary, 16 points
00:39:57Unbelievable
00:39:59You sound like somebody who knew already
00:40:01Top 2% of players
00:40:03you beat 870,000 players
00:40:05so that was a big one
00:40:07How many did we beat?
00:40:09You got 4 points
00:40:11Wow
00:40:13Why don't we stop?
00:40:15How did you get to Arsenal last night?
00:40:17Because we're sponsored by Super 6
00:40:19And you went 3-1
00:40:21Man Utd Arsenal
00:40:23No I didn't, we went 2-1
00:40:25Stop saying you
00:40:27No I'm saying when you were on Sky Sports for 24 hours
00:40:29you predicted 3-1
00:40:31Do you know why I do that?
00:40:33Because every time I go against United they get a result
00:40:35So I'm bluffing myself
00:40:37He's got an answer for everything
00:40:39Every time I go for United they lose
00:40:41We've won this Wazza, we've won this
00:40:43It's done
00:40:45No it's not done
00:40:47Hang in there
00:40:49There's a lot to play for
00:40:51It's on the line
00:40:53David Moyes got you out of trouble
00:40:55David Moyes is the one that gave him that boost
00:40:57Exactly
00:40:592-1 City
00:41:01I'm going with it
00:41:03Good call Wazza
00:41:07We need to do something different
00:41:09You knew you could have beaten Bournemouth
00:41:11Bournemouth
00:41:13But they're still my team, I'm still going to love Bournemouth
00:41:15We need to do something different
00:41:17We need to think outside the box
00:41:19We're so far behind
00:41:21I think Brighton beat City
00:41:23It's not being silly, we need to get points
00:41:25It's not being silly because we're not talking about a City side that's
00:41:27blasting it when they've got what everybody's waiting for
00:41:29You are like a striker now
00:41:31that can't make his mind up, taking the extra touch
00:41:33losing the chance for the shot
00:41:35I'm on as good a serve as I'm getting
00:41:37There's two
00:41:39Dumb and dumber
00:41:41Dumb and dumber
00:41:43There's always a truth in a joke isn't there
00:41:471-1 2-1
00:41:492-0 City
00:41:51I'm hanging my hat
00:41:53I said a joke, he said Brighton
00:41:55and then you go City
00:41:57Forest
00:41:592-0
00:42:01Ipswich haven't won a game
00:42:03since December
00:42:05Forest
00:42:072-0
00:42:09They have to win this game
00:42:11Team scores
00:42:131-0 Ipswich
00:42:15I knew it, there's a twist there, you see that's ticking outside the box
00:42:17Yeah because he's got a bit of credit
00:42:19in the bank
00:42:21They haven't won a game since December
00:42:23I think Ipswich's last chance
00:42:25at home
00:42:27Forest going for Champions League
00:42:29I know but they've won the last couple of games
00:42:31They'd be excited
00:42:33Perfect for them away from home
00:42:35Just text us on Saturday afternoon
00:42:37You're right, you're right gal
00:42:39That's really bad
00:42:41Bournemouth Brentford
00:42:43Saturday 5.30
00:42:45Bournemouth
00:42:47Bournemouth Brentford
00:42:49Do you buy all of them?
00:42:512-2
00:42:53Go and draw
00:42:55You should put that stuff on
00:42:57Yes
00:42:59I think someone's going to win it
00:43:01He's got no nails
00:43:03Bournemouth
00:43:05Bournemouth
00:43:07Bournemouth
00:43:09Bournemouth
00:43:11Go on righty
00:43:13Bournemouth
00:43:153-1 Bournemouth
00:43:172-1 Bournemouth
00:43:19Indecision
00:43:212-1 Bournemouth
00:43:23Do Arsenal Chelsea
00:43:25Arsenal Chelsea
00:43:27Sunday 1.30
00:43:29Good news is I'm not on
00:43:31on Sunday
00:43:33Are you not on at all Sunday?
00:43:35I thought you'd been on the
00:43:37Arsenal Chelsea Leicester Man United games
00:43:39I'm doing the cup final
00:43:41I'm at the cup final
00:43:43We have to find something
00:43:45This is the one at home
00:43:47My brother's a Newcastle fan
00:43:49He's flying in from Madrid
00:43:51The women's on the Saturday
00:43:53The men's on the Sunday
00:43:55Arsenal Chelsea
00:43:57That's the score I went for
00:43:592-1 to Arsenal
00:44:01You could do it because you had 40 points in front of us
00:44:03You could say you know what
00:44:05I'm not even going to do any this week
00:44:07You could do that
00:44:09It wouldn't be in the spirit of Super 6 would it?
00:44:11Didn't Paul Palmer
00:44:13How many penalties did he have in a row?
00:44:15I think Arsenal will win but
00:44:17We'll go 1-1 I don't think it's 3-1
00:44:19Liverpool Newcastle
00:44:21Liverpool going 2-1
00:44:23Or 2-0
00:44:252-0 Liverpool
00:44:27You're not giving Isak a goal?
00:44:29Do you know something
00:44:31Newcastle never play well at Wembley
00:44:33Who's a Newcastle fan in here?
00:44:35Anyone?
00:44:37Have Newcastle ever played well at Wembley?
00:44:39I hope they do
00:44:41I actually thought they had a chance at final
00:44:43The United one
00:44:45They didn't play well did they?
00:44:473-1
00:44:49When you watch Newcastle at Wembley
00:44:51You see all them fans that travel 6-7 hours
00:44:53Go on give them something
00:44:55Surprise them
00:44:57Never turned up against United was that 2-0?
00:44:59No it was 2-0 wasn't it?
00:45:01And then they just sat in
00:45:03Even when we played them
00:45:05When they got there
00:45:07I wasn't going to go back but
00:45:0998 they didn't turn up
00:45:1199 didn't turn up
00:45:13United 2-0
00:45:15It's the pressure and weight of being there
00:45:17It was with Shearer
00:45:19And Clattenburg yesterday
00:45:21I'm thinking
00:45:23Making it
00:45:25I know it's a cup final but
00:45:27For a player I can imagine being in the city
00:45:29And them all doing the same thing
00:45:31Jesus
00:45:33Just getting it too much for them
00:45:35But I thought maybe the last cup final
00:45:37And then getting this one
00:45:39Because they did look so nervous
00:45:41But to be playing Liverpool they're not going to
00:45:43Although Man United
00:45:45Man City FA Cup Final
00:45:47I never thought United would do it
00:45:49All great points
00:45:51Thanks Ben
00:45:53Leicester United
00:45:55I think United wouldn't that do you?
00:45:57I don't know
00:45:59Can you imagine if we beat them?
00:46:01Are United going through on Thursday night?
00:46:03I don't want a debate on it
00:46:05I think they're going through
00:46:07Yeah I think they're going through
00:46:09What do you think?
00:46:11Do you think PSV will turn around tonight?
00:46:13Putting the light out for PSG
00:46:15PSV tonight
00:46:17Yeah 2-1 United
00:46:19You're not sure?
00:46:21I'm not sure either I think 2-1
00:46:23Thank you very much
00:46:25Right
00:46:27A big
00:46:29Potential controversy in the WSL
00:46:31Where there is talk of scrapping
00:46:33Relegation
00:46:35Which to be honest with you was the touch point
00:46:37And flare for the
00:46:39Super League discussion a few years ago
00:46:41What do you think?
00:46:43Discuss
00:46:45Because it's not a happy comment
00:46:47I think it's a difficult one
00:46:49Because obviously what they're trying to do is
00:46:51The likes of say Newcastle, Birmingham
00:46:53Teams that are in the Championship
00:46:55They want teams to obviously invest
00:46:57In these teams but without them getting
00:46:59Kind of that guaranteed
00:47:01They want WSL action
00:47:03And it's so hard for them to get into that league
00:47:05So I think they're trying to close off the relegation
00:47:07So that if somebody comes in and invests
00:47:09You're going to get a guaranteed 3-4 years
00:47:11In that top league but
00:47:13We were discussing it before
00:47:15The beauty of English football is
00:47:17Relegation, promotion, do you know what I mean?
00:47:19So for it to be taken away
00:47:21You just think
00:47:23Is that real English football?
00:47:25Because that's what you live for isn't it really?
00:47:27Just give us context
00:47:29What's the situation around the world
00:47:31In regards to the women's game
00:47:33Is it fixed leagues or is it promotion?
00:47:35So for example America
00:47:37It's always been a fixed league
00:47:39But it's very business heavy
00:47:41But then you look at
00:47:43The Framboeners Liga
00:47:45And Norwegian League
00:47:47They are in expansion
00:47:49And they're not getting rid of relegation
00:47:51The things I spoke to
00:47:53You speak to WPLL
00:47:55And I understand how hard it is and what they're trying to do
00:47:57In respect to the relegation because they want
00:47:59Investment but the investment that you'll get
00:48:01That will come into that league
00:48:03Because there's no relegation
00:48:05That can't be sustainable in respects
00:48:07Of owners
00:48:09After 3-4 years
00:48:11Or maybe 4-5 years
00:48:13All of a sudden you say we're going to open relegation again now
00:48:15It's not realistic
00:48:17I think the whole play
00:48:19With what WPLL are trying to do
00:48:21They'll just keep it closed off
00:48:23They'll keep no relegation
00:48:25Where's it coming from?
00:48:27Where's this coming from? Who's driving this?
00:48:29It's up to the clubs to vote on it
00:48:31The fact is what I said was
00:48:33With WPLL is that there's no way
00:48:35I can back anything you're doing
00:48:37If it's got relegation to do with it
00:48:39That's not
00:48:41You're taking away one of the core
00:48:43Fundaments of the English game
00:48:45What it's about, the jeopardy of coming up, going down
00:48:47And everything that comes with
00:48:49That, this is not the American
00:48:51This is not the NWSL, they're used to that
00:48:53There's a hard for teams to come up right?
00:48:55Teams go straight back down like the
00:48:57Premiership men
00:48:59That is what's difficult isn't it?
00:49:01If you're asking somebody to invest
00:49:03Do you know what I mean?
00:49:05Are people going to invest if they think
00:49:07They're just going to go up and come back down
00:49:09But it'll also extend the teams
00:49:11In the league as well won't it?
00:49:13Who came up this season?
00:49:15Palace
00:49:17And how are they doing?
00:49:19They're struggling
00:49:21If you invest in something in life
00:49:23There's no guarantee that it will succeed
00:49:25I don't get this
00:49:27Right of football club owners
00:49:29Why they think their money is different
00:49:31Than anybody else's money in the world
00:49:33When you invest in something, whatever that may be
00:49:35Your money can either, your house
00:49:37It'll either go up or it'll go down
00:49:39This is the problem for some reason with
00:49:41The women's game and people are investing in it
00:49:43All you're hearing is
00:49:45Well what about a return on my
00:49:47When did you start talking about
00:49:49Returning the money?
00:49:51With the women's game, the reason why
00:49:53We're not getting maybe a load of people investing
00:49:55Is because they say we want people to come in
00:49:57And invest while it's no relegation
00:49:59Just give us an understanding on numbers
00:50:01I think to put it into context here
00:50:03I always look at the Premier League numbers for men
00:50:05So we're looking at the men's Premier League game
00:50:07We see a billion spent every transfer window
00:50:09We see clubs to be fair losing
00:50:1150, 60, 70 million a year
00:50:13We're talking about investing what in the women's team
00:50:15In a football club to become competitive
00:50:1715, 20 million?
00:50:19You know what, I think
00:50:21People are talking about investing
00:50:238 million and they're still struggling a bit
00:50:25It needs more than that
00:50:27So let's say it's 15 million a year
00:50:29You're telling me that out of 5, 600 million of revenue
00:50:31Or 400 million of revenue you can't basically
00:50:33Put in 3% of your revenue into the women's team
00:50:35Without having it guaranteed that you're not going to lose money
00:50:37Let's take United because we've just talked about
00:50:39United are going to lose money on
00:50:41Rashford, Casemiro, Anthony, Sancho
00:50:43They're going to lose tens and tens
00:50:45And tens of millions on those players
00:50:47Sowell spurs on players
00:50:49Chelsea have lost a fortune on players
00:50:51City lose money on certain players
00:50:53That's football, you lose money on players, you make money on players
00:50:55Why would they not just invest 15 million a year
00:50:57As Premier League clubs?
00:50:59That's the question isn't it? It's the question because
00:51:01When you talk about it there's so much feast here
00:51:03They invest that in academies
00:51:05But they won't for some reason
00:51:07When you did your interview
00:51:09With Sir Jim
00:51:11He said didn't he, he said
00:51:13I'm focusing on the men's because the women's
00:51:15Are only making this amount
00:51:17Compared to the men's but you need to put
00:51:19Into something to then get something
00:51:21Out of it, do you know what I mean?
00:51:23I think that's why investors
00:51:25Are a bit closed off to it
00:51:27Because as you say it is a risk
00:51:29But people want this guarantee which you can't get
00:51:31But he spoke about it in the interview
00:51:33Surely it's not United, City, Chelsea
00:51:35Who are successful and at the top of the league driving this
00:51:37It must be the club though when you're going down
00:51:39Probably clubs like
00:51:41Newcastle, Birmingham
00:51:43Teams that are lower down that want that
00:51:45WSL action but investors want them
00:51:47Games don't they? They don't want to be in the
00:51:49Championship and stuff like that but
00:51:51I do agree with Wrighty, can you imagine
00:51:53Football without relegation?
00:51:55It's a scandal Jill
00:51:57I worked at it, obviously your lads
00:51:59Was out there in the United States
00:52:01It was weird
00:52:03When you get past the halfway point of the season
00:52:05And if you're in a position
00:52:07Where you can't make playoffs
00:52:09Everyone just
00:52:11Switches off, staff, players
00:52:13It's just like let's get ready and start preparing
00:52:15For next season and then
00:52:17The integrity of the game
00:52:19These players
00:52:21Have got a right to then go and compete
00:52:23It's a strange feeling
00:52:25I think it's an absolute scandal
00:52:27I'm not as close to the women's game as you two are
00:52:29But I think it's an absolute scandal and what's a scandal about it
00:52:31Is the entitlement
00:52:33The entitlement of football club owners
00:52:35Who think they can invest money
00:52:37But they need a guarantee and a certainty
00:52:39Scrap relegation
00:52:41I won't invest in the women's game
00:52:43That isn't a position of a good person
00:52:45F*** off then
00:52:47Seriously, f*** off out the game
00:52:49Because to be honest with you
00:52:51The fact of the matter is in football you're going to lose money
00:52:53You're going to make money, you have no problem with basically spending
00:52:55350 grand a week on a player
00:52:57And losing 20 million a year on them
00:52:59And spending 60 million on a fee for a player that you might only get 10 million back for
00:53:01But you won't put 15 million
00:53:03I'd say let's say there's 100 million into the women's game
00:53:05We're talking about 15 million quid
00:53:07And that's a lot of money, don't get me wrong
00:53:09I'm not close enough to it but what I am against
00:53:11Is this idea that basically
00:53:13Women's football is a closed shop
00:53:15And they think that basically they should only be in it
00:53:17And let's name a club for me Gillian
00:53:19The sort of championship of the
00:53:21Of the championship of the women's league
00:53:23That basically would have
00:53:25When I was at Birmingham
00:53:27So we used to sit down
00:53:29Once a week
00:53:31With Hope Howell
00:53:33Who was there at Birmingham and we'd have meetings
00:53:35And to be fair Birmingham were investing
00:53:37A lot of money into it
00:53:39It got to the point where I'm asking questions
00:53:41And Hope was asking for more for the women's team
00:53:43So if we got a new physio
00:53:45She'd be like well we've got a new physio
00:53:47So Hope was really good at driving it
00:53:49And pushing it but you were investing a lot of money
00:53:51Into the women's team there
00:53:53I've got no problem with, I'm sure
00:53:55I know some clubs invest in the women's team a lot
00:53:57My point is, name me a club that's probably not going to get
00:53:59Into the WSL at this moment in time
00:54:01But they're in the championship
00:54:03Give me a club
00:54:05Is Southampton in there?
00:54:07Yeah Southampton, Newcastle are kind of
00:54:09So basically Southampton don't make this cut
00:54:11And they're not in it, Southampton are one of the great football clubs
00:54:13In our country, they can never get into the
00:54:15Top league in women's football
00:54:17Because basically the rest of them just closed it off
00:54:19And they've got to do what?
00:54:21They've got to beg, steal and borrow
00:54:23If they play well you can come up
00:54:25But there's no relegation
00:54:27They're going to make the league more teams
00:54:29Does that work?
00:54:31Listen
00:54:33So what happens is
00:54:35There's no relegation for four or five years
00:54:37But the teams that come up
00:54:39They can come in
00:54:41Do you understand what I'm saying?
00:54:43So the teams can come in so it builds the league up
00:54:45And it makes it bigger
00:54:47But then there's no relegation
00:54:49But then what happens is
00:54:51After four years
00:54:53Then they introduce it again
00:54:55Why don't they just bring the top
00:54:57Five teams up?
00:54:59Rather than waiting for four or five years
00:55:01Do you know what needs to happen?
00:55:03They need to increase the scope of the regulator to include the women's game
00:55:05Simple as that
00:55:07You need some power from above
00:55:09Because ultimately the reality is
00:55:11You're talking about basically
00:55:13Owners of clubs
00:55:15Can't be bothered
00:55:17Determining rules for themselves
00:55:19But actually
00:55:21They don't always think about the good of the game
00:55:23And the wider game
00:55:25How is the women's numbers?
00:55:27Well you know what
00:55:29The thing is
00:55:31What the WPLL will say is
00:55:33They're interested
00:55:35Listen Chelsea are about to win for the sixth time on the spin
00:55:37You know what I mean
00:55:39There's a drop in
00:55:41Attendance
00:55:43Simply because Chelsea have won it by January
00:55:45They're trying to get the league more competitive
00:55:47Welcome to the men's Premier League
00:55:49But the thing is
00:55:51For a league that's fledging
00:55:53It's trying to get going
00:55:55You want people watching? You want people going to the games?
00:55:57This is why I have certain sympathy
00:55:59With the WPLL
00:56:01They've been trying to be involved for a year
00:56:03Coming up about a year
00:56:05And the first thing they come up with
00:56:07Is no relegation
00:56:09You need to be doing more thinking than that
00:56:11You need to be more innovative than that
00:56:13Is it being driven by owners
00:56:15Who basically feel like they're entitled
00:56:17And can never ever be in a position
00:56:19Whereby they lose money and go down into another league
00:56:21Is it because they want a fixed outcome
00:56:23Basically
00:56:25Is that it?
00:56:27They want a fixed outcome to put money in
00:56:29It's almost like blackmail
00:56:31That's what's happening, that's why the game is like it isn't
00:56:33It won't get any better
00:56:35The minute that you start to basically succumb
00:56:37And back down to these type of people
00:56:39They've got you forever
00:56:41Vice like grip and they never let go
00:56:43So you've just got to basically resist it with all you can
00:56:45And I think
00:56:47This is what we're trying to do
00:56:49With the WPLL
00:56:51They're really just a mouthpiece for the owners
00:56:53So when they come up with that, that's worrying
00:56:55Because the owners would be happy with that
00:56:57Who would have taken Super League
00:56:59Who would have had that, we're talking about the same people
00:57:01Well when the games went on telly
00:57:03It was like you've got to be grateful
00:57:05That you're signing these big deals
00:57:07But then suddenly it was like 11 o'clock on a Sunday
00:57:09When all kids have got football
00:57:11I remember eating pasta at like 6am in the morning
00:57:13I was like going to play a game
00:57:1511 o'clock in the morning
00:57:17And then as you say 6, 7 o'clock on a night
00:57:19Them battles aren't going to change are they
00:57:21I think it's just going to be a challenge for women's football
00:57:23It will be
00:57:25They only want to eat off the top Roy
00:57:27The girls get to a final, get to the Euros
00:57:29Get to the World Cup final and everybody jumps in
00:57:31Because the Premier League to be honest with you
00:57:33Is so successful
00:57:35It wouldn't be difficult for them
00:57:37To actually make some concessions and compromises
00:57:39For the women's game is what I think
00:57:41It wouldn't be difficult
00:57:43If a stadium costs £12 million, £15 million
00:57:45For like a 5, 6, 7 thousand seater stadium
00:57:47Whatever that costs, if you think about it
00:57:49It's the cost of an average right back
00:57:51Do you know what I mean, it's probably your second right back
00:57:53£10, £12 million, if you think about United
00:57:55Just bought Dogwood for £20 odd million
00:57:57They've got Masraouf, they've got Dalot
00:57:59They've got these types of places, they all cost £15, £20 million
00:58:01You could build a women's stadium for that
00:58:03You could play youth team games in there as well
00:58:05Why don't they go, it seems very simple
00:58:07But they won't do it
00:58:09Lose your third right back or lose your fifth centre back for a season
00:58:11Do something for a season, just give up a little bit
00:58:13It's not difficult for these clubs
00:58:15To do these types of things
00:58:17Unless they're forced into doing it
00:58:19I don't know through the government, whatever it is
00:58:21They won't do it
00:58:23What do the women's get out of Arsenal for home matches?
00:58:25Well for the home matches in Boreham Wood they'll get
00:58:27Emirates have had it
00:58:29I've been there with £50,000
00:58:31They'll get £40,000, £50,000
00:58:33They'll get £40,000, £50,000
00:58:35No
00:58:37This episode of Stick To Football
00:58:39Is brought to you by Skybet
00:58:41Commuter questions
00:58:43We're moving on
00:58:45Do you ever hear from your old managers?
00:58:47Yeah
00:58:49Yeah, it's funny
00:58:51Roy?
00:58:53Every time I get sacked
00:58:55He gives me a text
00:58:57What does it say?
00:58:59He gives me a text
00:59:01Every time I get sacked
00:59:03Keep going
00:59:05What do you mean? Just a phone call out of the blue?
00:59:07Yeah, do you ever keep your hair from me?
00:59:09You keep in touch with George Grim
00:59:11Did you meet him last year?
00:59:13I get the odd text from the boss
00:59:15Every now and then
00:59:17I'll get something from
00:59:19Steve Copp or Mike
00:59:21Good to see you doing what you're doing
00:59:23I know George isn't great
00:59:25He's not well
00:59:27He's not feeling great
00:59:29Every now and then I'll hear from the boss
00:59:31That's nice
00:59:33The thing is when you see him
00:59:35I don't get too much link with him
00:59:37It's funny
00:59:39He's got my missus' number though
00:59:41Because we're looking to
00:59:43We're looking to rent his gaffer
00:59:45Any concerns?
00:59:47No
00:59:49I meet my old managers
00:59:51Some of them for a coffee now and then
00:59:53So Nick Cushing got
00:59:55He left New York and then he's just been
00:59:57The city manager
00:59:59Was that a surprise?
01:00:01He's come back in
01:00:03No I don't think so, I think it was about time
01:00:05Definitely
01:00:07I do think it was about time
01:00:09I think there's a lot of people
01:00:11I think a lot of people would be happy with that
01:00:13Does Phil contact you every so often?
01:00:15Yes he does actually
01:00:17What's he saying to Ralph?
01:00:19He says he really enjoys this actually
01:00:21He says he really enjoys this
01:00:23But Phil's lovely
01:00:25I think the managers that keep in touch with you after are the good ones
01:00:27Because it shows that they didn't just
01:00:29I remember
01:00:31I remember you said the managers
01:00:33I remember there was a couple of weeks
01:00:35Before all the George Graham scandal happened
01:00:37I remember he called me in
01:00:39And he wasn't happy with me
01:00:41Because he said you're doing too much
01:00:43Doing too much outside the game
01:00:45I'm seeing you on this, seeing you on that
01:00:47And then obviously
01:00:49The scandal happened
01:00:51And so it happened
01:00:53A week later
01:00:55He said he wanted to meet up
01:00:57We just had a chat and he says
01:00:59Do as much as you can, game's short
01:01:01I said Gaffer you were telling me a couple of weeks
01:01:03A couple of weeks ago that I'm doing too much
01:01:05Do as much as you can
01:01:07And to be honest he's always
01:01:09Every couple of months
01:01:11I'll hear from him, say how you're doing
01:01:13That's good
01:01:15Do you keep in touch with players?
01:01:17When I was a manager
01:01:19No like now
01:01:21Do you check in with some of the lads and stuff
01:01:23Loads of lads
01:01:25And it's nice when you bump into a few of them
01:01:27On a match this, Yap was there
01:01:29Peter, it was good
01:01:31What about players he played for you?
01:01:33Yeah that's what I mean
01:01:35Players who played for you as a manager
01:01:37So you're checking with some now?
01:01:39A couple, yeah
01:01:41You're interested in how they're doing
01:01:43Particularly when they're going to coaching and management
01:01:45You keep an eye out for them
01:01:47Good
01:01:49Wazza, any managers keep in touch with you?
01:01:51Players that you've managed?
01:01:53A few players yeah, not many
01:01:55But a few who
01:01:57I enjoy working with
01:01:59And then there's some who
01:02:01I hope I don't ever speak to
01:02:03Speak to them again soon
01:02:05The championship is tight now isn't it at the bottom
01:02:07The results last week too
01:02:09Tough going
01:02:11There'll be a couple of good wins in there
01:02:13One last night
01:02:15Be Coventry last night
01:02:17And be Blackburn the weekend I think
01:02:19Tight at the bottom
01:02:21St Patrick's Day is coming up soon, when is it?
01:02:2317th
01:02:25Monday
01:02:27Which country has the best food
01:02:29The best music
01:02:31The best drink and fashion sense
01:02:33Out of England or Ireland
01:02:35I'd have to mix some of that I think
01:02:37Which has the best what, say it again
01:02:39Food, music, drink and fashion
01:02:41Fashion I'm going to go England
01:02:43I think that's easy
01:02:45The rest would be Ireland
01:02:47What food?
01:02:49Hospitality
01:02:51I'd probably go with hospitality
01:02:53If you go to the right place in Ireland with the right people
01:02:55It's the best in the world
01:02:57The best hospitality in the world
01:02:59If you can drink
01:03:01Boys on Irish are definitely Ireland
01:03:03For music and Westlife
01:03:05If you go to the right place in Ireland
01:03:07You say the right place
01:03:09You can go to any pub
01:03:11Yeah that's right
01:03:13What are the Irish dishes Roy
01:03:15Same as England in some ways
01:03:17You like your Irish stew don't you
01:03:19Yeah I love it
01:03:21I always think Irish stew
01:03:23I knew you were going to say this
01:03:25You go to Liverpool it's Scouse
01:03:27It's like Lancashire hot pot
01:03:29They're all the same aren't they
01:03:31Not the same as the Irish stew
01:03:33You can have a Guinness in Manchester
01:03:35Or a Guinness in Ireland
01:03:37Or even chocolate in Ireland
01:03:39It's the milk, it's the way they do it
01:03:41It's the Guinness, it's the water
01:03:43What's in an Irish stew then that's different
01:03:45Than the ingredients that are in those
01:03:47The love is made with it
01:03:49Thank you very much
01:03:51You eat the carrots
01:03:53You've cooked an Irish stew
01:03:55The potatoes are nicer
01:03:57How are the potatoes
01:03:59Cadbury's in Ireland is the nicest
01:04:01Bee stock, Guinness, red wine, potatoes, carrots
01:04:03Beautiful Cadbury's
01:04:05Do you want a thing of chocolate
01:04:07Surely it's just the same chocolate
01:04:09Milk in a traditional Irish stew
01:04:11So the chocolate knows it's going to Ireland
01:04:13You could use Irish milk
01:04:15Irish beef stew
01:04:17Hearty Irish beef in an Irish stew
01:04:19But it's a traditional Irish stew
01:04:21With tender lamb
01:04:23Which is it?
01:04:25Is Irish stew beef or lamb?
01:04:27I don't know, I didn't eat any of them
01:04:29Jesus
01:04:31You're quizzing me
01:04:33Irish stew, beef or lamb
01:04:35Where are you going?
01:04:37It's a real community question
01:04:39I'm actually interested, what is it?
01:04:41Beef or lamb
01:04:43The old fashioned Irish stew
01:04:45Was mutton or lamb
01:04:47So it's lamb
01:04:49Was it mutton dressed up as lamb?
01:04:53Right
01:04:55If you could have represented any other country
01:04:57Who would it have been?
01:04:59Brazil for me
01:05:01At what?
01:05:03I think that's where Brazil done it in football
01:05:05When we were growing up it would have been Brazil
01:05:07As I've got older
01:05:09Mine would be Ireland
01:05:11Go on
01:05:13Would you be Ireland, Wayne?
01:05:15I'd be Italy
01:05:17I don't know about your big mistakes
01:05:19I'd probably go Italy
01:05:21Would you play for Ireland?
01:05:23I'd love Italy
01:05:25Mick called me up
01:05:27Mick McCarthy
01:05:29He's a nice guy apparently
01:05:31He spoke to Lee Carsley
01:05:33He spoke to Mick
01:05:35I'm close to doing it
01:05:37And then he called me up to the 21s
01:05:39And I was like
01:05:41I'm not playing for Ireland in the 21s
01:05:43You want me, I'll play for England
01:05:45I'll play for England in the 21s
01:05:47And then it never happened
01:05:49Wow
01:05:51That was close
01:05:53So if they pulled you into the first team
01:05:55You would have went?
01:05:57Probably yeah
01:05:59Wow
01:06:01I had a problem with this when I was with England
01:06:03Jack wouldn't go over to England in the 21s
01:06:05I had a problem with this with England
01:06:07Because basically they had to do a beauty parade
01:06:09I think it was for Jack and for Declan
01:06:11Where basically they were going and meeting
01:06:13So the managers, we had to go and convince
01:06:15I think both of them actually
01:06:17You didn't have to convince them
01:06:19They'd already made their mind up
01:06:21There's a meeting that basically
01:06:23They had to go to
01:06:25I'm really strong about this
01:06:27Tell them to pick the f***ing country
01:06:29It's not a job interview
01:06:31Playing for a country
01:06:33We'll make sure you get this many caps
01:06:35You don't know, play as well as you can
01:06:37You might get in, you might not get in
01:06:39And I was really hard on that
01:06:41I felt quite strongly about it at the time
01:06:43That we shouldn't be going interviewing players
01:06:45The association did
01:06:47But my point was at the time
01:06:49Don't go and meet them, they want to play for England
01:06:51It's a feeling
01:06:53It's not a conversation
01:06:55We had the same problem Gary
01:06:57If they need to think about it then you're in trouble
01:06:59Pick a country
01:07:01It's what you're feeling
01:07:03Because the managers are going to change
01:07:05The FA are going to change, the FA of Ireland are going to change
01:07:07The managers are going to change
01:07:09Roy might go and meet Jack or Declan
01:07:11Roy Hudson might go and meet Jack or Declan
01:07:13The boys aren't going to be with Ireland forever
01:07:15Martin O'Neill was brilliant with the boys
01:07:17He met them and spoke to them and they were in a couple of squads
01:07:19He just stepped back and said
01:07:21I know you have decisions to make
01:07:23But again if you're trying to persuade a player
01:07:25You're snookered already
01:07:27We kind of knew all along
01:07:29Obviously for Ireland you still have to try and get the best players available
01:07:31But not when you're pandering to players
01:07:33That's not good really
01:07:35And I think Jack said to Garret
01:07:37He'd go with England but he's not going with the 21s
01:07:39That's another argument to have
01:07:41Last question
01:07:43If you could go back in time to change anything
01:07:45What would it be?
01:07:47It's an open question
01:07:49Because it could be in your own life
01:07:51Or it could be a moment in history
01:07:53If you want to go deeper and bigger
01:07:55If we're feeling philosophical
01:07:57Change anything
01:07:59If you could change
01:08:01If you go back in time and change anything
01:08:03What would it be?
01:08:05I think we're all looking at you right here
01:08:07You'd want to score that penalty to charity
01:08:09I'd want to score that goal against Italy
01:08:11In Rome
01:08:13I'd like to score that, that would have been good
01:08:15You just said you wanted to play for Italy
01:08:17I do like Italy
01:08:19I love Italy
01:08:21That's some really hard questions
01:08:23I would change the ownership of United
01:08:25And make sure that nobody ever really
01:08:27Had a hold on it
01:08:29I know that
01:08:31People always have had a hold on it
01:08:33It's always been owned by family
01:08:35Local family or now an American family
01:08:37I would go back and try and fix that
01:08:39When it went to the stock exchange
01:08:41It became a bit more of a
01:08:43Obviously then you're open to anyone owning it
01:08:45So you'd stop that?
01:08:47You wouldn't do that?
01:08:49I think I'd look at football club ownership
01:08:55Not necessarily Germany
01:08:57Where you go to 51-49
01:08:59I'm not necessarily thinking that either
01:09:01I just think the idea that fans don't have a position
01:09:03In football clubs and don't have an ownership stake
01:09:05So they've always got a golden
01:09:07Share of some kind I think is wrong
01:09:09On certain things
01:09:11Good answer
01:09:13I think we've gone past that now
01:09:15We've gone beyond that point
01:09:17Football clubs have always been owned by local businessmen usually
01:09:19So I get it
01:09:21When it's going away a little bit
01:09:23It should have been grabbed
01:09:25I would change my word
01:09:27And if I got smashed by Marlon Harewood
01:09:29I got heavily tackled
01:09:31So now every time I walk down the street
01:09:33People don't shout Marlon anymore
01:09:35That's when I would change
01:09:37That one word everywhere I go
01:09:39Why would you change?
01:09:43I'm going to put two things to you
01:09:45Would you change the way you left United at the end
01:09:47You said before that you basically could have just sat there
01:09:49And sat it out
01:09:51I wouldn't have just sat at home, I would have trained properly
01:09:53And got back in the team 100%
01:09:55And then the other one is the Ireland situation
01:09:57I was kind of out of my control really
01:09:59You could have done something different
01:10:01I don't want to walk with people
01:10:03Who treat me like crap
01:10:05I get that but would you change
01:10:07Would they be too?
01:10:09Would I change them?
01:10:13I think it's hard to say
01:10:15It's hypothetical
01:10:17It's like to do with football
01:10:19Because that's part of your journey
01:10:21Part of your character
01:10:23Sometimes it's good things, bad things
01:10:25If I was advising a player in my position
01:10:27A bit older and a bit wiser
01:10:29Then you just sit where you are
01:10:31Don't go anywhere until you know
01:10:33Where you can and can't go
01:10:35Roy, lads are doing that now to be fair
01:10:37Think of lads like Casemiro said he's not leaving
01:10:39And Sancho said they're not leaving
01:10:41And Rashford
01:10:43I certainly know all the options
01:10:45The silly thing I did was left at it
01:10:47But I couldn't sign for another team
01:10:49Until January
01:10:51So I was injured so I had to sit around for another 6, 7, 8 weeks
01:10:53Whatever about the financial side of it
01:10:55At least know all your options
01:10:57And make a decision
01:10:59But the World Cup stuff, I don't know
01:11:01People challenge you
01:11:03And you can't back down with people either
01:11:05What about that Walker's Crisp advert?
01:11:07Did he do one?
01:11:09Did he do one?
01:11:11It was a charity game
01:11:13We'll see it afterwards
01:11:15Yeah let's get that
01:11:17I went to Ayia Napa for a week
01:11:19I should have gone for 2 weeks
01:11:23You must be proud that you've always stuck to your morals and values
01:11:25Do you know what I mean?
01:11:27You've never gone away from who you are
01:11:29But you make compromises as you get a bit older don't you?
01:11:31Yeah
01:11:33I think that's a good trait to have
01:11:35That you stick to who you are
01:11:37I'll try
01:11:39So righty
01:11:41What have the stats changed?
01:11:43Sign for United
01:11:45Imagine being in our dressing room
01:11:47What a chance you would have had, you've got 50 goals a season
01:11:49You know what I think
01:11:51If I was a few years younger
01:11:53I think I could have
01:11:55I could have got to United
01:11:57But I'm not saying I would have
01:11:59I'm just saying if I was a few years younger
01:12:01I know I could have thrived in that dressing room
01:12:03You playing on the shoulder
01:12:05We putting balls down the side
01:12:07You'd be getting chances every week
01:12:11Do you think you are as good a finisher
01:12:13As Corley, Teddy, Oli, all these boys
01:12:15Are getting loads of goals
01:12:17If I was getting their chances
01:12:19I'd definitely be scoring for Fulham
01:12:21On a weekly basis as a striker
01:12:23And you think I wish I was playing for them
01:12:25Of course, of course I'm going to take those chances
01:12:27So your biggest change would be
01:12:29You'd rather play for United
01:12:31I'm not saying I'd rather play for United
01:12:33I'm just talking about right now
01:12:35The way United were playing back then
01:12:37There's no striker
01:12:39Is that your thing you'd change?
01:12:41No I wouldn't change that
01:12:43If I could go back and change something
01:12:45I'd probably change hopefully Palace winning that FA Cup
01:12:47Because I think the Palace fans deserve something
01:12:49I wouldn't have went to the World Cup
01:12:51I shouldn't have
01:12:53The big man's back
01:12:55What was this, what did you say?
01:12:57I can't remember
01:12:59You shouldn't have gone what?
01:13:01I broke my foot before the end of the season
01:13:03Was that at Chelsea?
01:13:05Yeah, I rushed back
01:13:07I always remember walking in
01:13:09And Jermain Defoe was walking out
01:13:11He was on standby
01:13:13And I felt so bad for him
01:13:15I was never fit for the tournament
01:13:17You should never have gone to the World Cup
01:13:19In the quarter finals
01:13:21You should never have went there
01:13:23I know
01:13:25It was the first World Cup
01:13:27I remember reading about it
01:13:29When you were injured
01:13:31I think they were interviewing somebody
01:13:33And they were on about athletes trying to get back
01:13:35Not just footballers
01:13:37And there's no way they'd ever rush back
01:13:39If you've got a bad injury
01:13:41There's two things
01:13:43One you were quite young
01:13:45And you had to do it during a squad
01:13:47Begging him to come back
01:13:49The pressure he was under, I get that
01:13:51But sometimes I just go
01:13:53I really bet my very best
01:13:55And if you're not
01:13:57You always have to be brave enough to say no
01:13:59I also wish my first touch was better
01:14:01When I got injured
01:14:03Gary Speed, God bless his soul
01:14:05Tackled me
01:14:07And I never was the same after that
01:14:09I didn't play hardly for three or four years
01:14:11I thought you meant your first touch in general
01:14:14I thought you were going to stop there
01:14:16I wish my first touch was better
01:14:18Your second wasn't great either
01:14:20Going back, see with Portugal
01:14:22You remember when you done the metatarsal
01:14:24And you just blasted on the scene
01:14:26A proper blast on the scene
01:14:28That was a change, that injury
01:14:30I think we win that tournament
01:14:32If Wayne doesn't do his metatarsal
01:14:34I thought you said World Cup
01:14:36I thought when you had two or three
01:14:38I think you might have said that as well
01:14:40I'll take the Palace one
01:14:42The ones with England
01:14:44You can't deal with their managers
01:14:46They're choosing people over you
01:14:48For whatever reason
01:14:50I got left out of every squad
01:14:52And as soon as they come back from the tournament
01:14:54I got pulled back in
01:14:56Left out, pulled back in
01:14:58Who did Theo come in for?
01:15:00Theo went 2006, weren't he?
01:15:02But if we all go through our careers
01:15:04I wish that was definitely me
01:15:06That's the only thing
01:15:08I don't know if all the problems I had
01:15:1095, 96, that season
01:15:12That time when
01:15:14Like all those
01:15:16Yourself, Sheila
01:15:18Sheringham, Ferdinand Cole
01:15:20Collymore, Sutton
01:15:22You think of all these forwards there
01:15:24When you think you're a footballer
01:15:26Something will come back to me when I'm out walking the dog
01:15:28Something will come from nowhere
01:15:30Loads of moments like that
01:15:32Where you go, but that's
01:15:34Isn't that all part of your direction?
01:15:36Like you said Wayne, it's the journey
01:15:38It's definitely the journey
01:15:40You don't even think about the success
01:15:42It's definitely the memories
01:15:44And you wouldn't have them memories if it had been different
01:15:46And the injuries, when you're a sports person you get badly injured
01:15:48But then again you have to count your blessings
01:15:50A cock jockey died
01:15:52Was it four or five weeks ago?
01:15:54So these jockeys, when I'm a footballer
01:15:56I broke my foot, I missed a game
01:15:58These sports people, a lot of sports people
01:16:00Poor lad, 24, 25 cock, you're passing away like that
01:16:02Count your blessings
01:16:04Okay, well that's the end
01:16:06Of this episode
01:16:08Thank you very much
01:16:10Such a solemn end
01:16:12Let's move
01:16:14We're easily upset out
