00:00Students from the Menonten Nord Primary School in Benin's Kotonou are participating in a competition organized by the International Comic Book Meeting.
00:11Bukinabe actress and author Rukiata Wedrogo is mentoring the students, inspiring them with a comic book, Wagah Press, based on a highly successful show which has gained popularity across the continent and beyond.
00:26We came to do a workshop on comic books. We show them how to develop a scenario, a story, how to write and draw. Today we chose a drawing that represents the Amazon of Benin.
00:38This student by the name Sove Agbanfli drew an Amazon, or Asiba, in the local foul language of Benin.
00:49I drew a woman, Asiba. She is taking out baths to wash them. That's what came to my mind. I don't really like drawing, but I just tried.
01:03Sove's drawing was noticed and earned her a prize, a cheque to purchase a comic book. Rukiata believes in the young talents in the class.
01:14I think there are great potentials in this class to become screenwriters or even illustrators. We saw beautiful drawings. We saw great scenarios. We need to encourage the children. We really need to train them for that.
01:24As part of the educational resource project, the International Comic Book Meeting selected young comic authors to publish a series titled Histoire Kotonou.
01:33Osei Vence created a comic Kotonou F1 which tells the story of an influencer willing to do anything to achieve fame.
01:41I was inspired by my own experiences and those of my friends, because even as young as we are, we want to succeed. We inspire to fame, fortune, and sometimes we are willing to take all the risks to achieve our goals.
01:56So I relate to this story. It's kind of my story, that of my friends and the people I meet.
02:03The International Comic Book Meetings has sparked a real wave of excitement among young authors, ensuring a bright future for comic books in Benin and inspiring the rest of the continent.
