What is the #Patriots plan at WR? Chance at Kupp dwindling? Will Pats address WR at #NFL Draft with Tet or Hunter? Still too early to worry?
Transcript
00:00I get what he's saying that, you know, because think about it. You got Antonio Brown. It was
00:05like August when you got him, but you're going to need somebody who's really disgruntled and wants
00:10Otter. At that time, wants Otter that organization. I think the best time is between now
00:17and right before the draft because teams will be more likely to move guys because they can get
00:23draft capital to use it for this upcoming season. So it will be interesting to see
00:29Cooper Cup may not be an option for you and Adam Schefter reporting that the Cowboys are very
00:36interested and would like to remove him as an option for any other team. Do you feel like Greg?
00:43Yeah, I would like to just use Robin a golf course for a second because he had the line of the day
00:47in Twitch. Yeah, goober cup. Do you feel like goober cup is an option though? Because he's a
00:54free agent right now, right? If you really wanted him, why is why would you give him an offer?
01:03Why would you let him wouldn't you have given him a significant amount of money? Yeah. And
01:09and he would already be a New England Patriot. I know there's some speculation that he wanted
01:15to stay on the West Coast, but but why not throw him an offer and see like, you know, you were
01:21willing to do it with Chris Godwin, at least that's what the reports were. So if you really
01:27want to Cooper Cup, why would you allow him to potentially go visit other places have other
01:33offers being thrown at him? Well, when Mike Rabel says, you know, references the draft and the
01:39opportunity there, right? Does that say to you that they are now leaning less toward Travis
01:46Hunter at number four if he's available than they were last week, if you believe that they were last
01:51week? I mean, I think with the addition of Davis, they're not leaning toward right anymore. No.
01:57And I would say also, Greg, like in wiki is spot on with this. If you want him, he's here.
02:03Shyam said it and he was right. They could have used a seventh round pick that obviously is
02:07irrelevant and got him in and then restructured his deal like teams do. Or they could sign him
02:13because we saw they were going full bore. They were the leading bidder on terms of financial
02:19offer for Godwin. We all believe, right? Yeah. Yeah, that's it. And he was a much higher ticket
02:24item in terms of the free agency dollars that Godwin got versus what Cooper Cup will get right
02:29now. So if you wanted him, he'd be here. Why wouldn't you? Everything you're going to do in
02:35the draft becomes easier the more guys you get in before it begins. You get leverage. You can
02:41trade picks back. Patriots and Belichick famously did that well for years in terms of getting it,
02:46trading one first round pick for two. I just don't understand what the downside is to bringing in
02:51Cooper Cup right now. And if you said you had this earlier, Greg, and you were seeing that
02:57Cooper Cup wants like 12 million a year, you were willing to give Chris Godwin 30 million a year.
03:03So why not just say, hey, Cooper, here's what we're going to do. We'll give you two years.
03:07We'll give you 35 million. We'll throw in like a 20 million dollar sign of bonus. So that averages
03:14out to what, like 16 and a half million. Or you could say we'll give you two years of 30 million.
03:19That's like 15 million per year. He wants 12. You give him 20 million as a sign of bonus.
03:25You could easily do that. That's why I wonder how bad do you want this guy? Because if you're
03:32willing to let him go out there and test the market, there's a chance you could lose him to
03:36somebody else. And Greg, what's the one position they haven't been able to draft in the last 25
03:42years? Wide receiver. So why are we telling some of the same people, the guy that took Taequann
03:47Thornton, why are we having those people here to pick a receiver instead of signing one that
03:52can already play? And would you use the number four overall pick? I'm the mock draft expert,
03:58but would you use the four overall pick on Tetheroa McMillan, the kid from Arizona,
04:03wide receiver? If Travis Hunter and Abdul Carter are gone, yes, absolutely.
04:07I already see the billboard, Greg. Tetheroa McMillan because he's not Nikhil Harry.
04:11You would still take Travis Hunter. No, I don't want Travis Hunter, but they would.
04:16Mike Vrabel would. If Travis Hunter's at four, they'll take him. I would almost guarantee.
04:20So you're going to say that? I just think the way he has spoken about him before,
04:25I think the way the league views Travis Hunter, he is a, as they say, a football playing Jesse.
04:30Like the guy just wants to go out and play ball and he plays on every snap on both sides of the
04:34ball. And I think coaches eat that crap up. Yeah, but he's not going to do that in the NFL.
04:38So you would have three corners going into camp. One guy you're paying.
04:42Unless they focused him at receiver. Like that's the thing, like knowing you have Carlton Davis
04:45and Christian Gonzalez, maybe their line of thinking is they put him at receiver first.
04:51They're going to draft him, draft him at number four and put him at wide receiver.
04:55Look, I think, I think it's an option. Like it has to be weighed, right? Like that has to
04:59be considered, but no one do both. No one out there has him playing. No one out there has
05:04any teams looking at them as a wide receiver. Correct. But the rest, but the people out there
05:08doing that wiggy are nerds and idiots like me. So NFL teams could have very much have a different
05:13view of it where they like, we just have to put them at one. We can choose which one, but we just
05:18have to put them at one. I mean, Vrabel does love him as a player. I mean, he's made that clear.
05:24He loves his talent. I think he loves his talent because if you went out and got Carlton Davis,
05:29you already have Christian Gonzalez. If you're getting Travis Hunter, then that tells me you
05:35believe you can move him to full-time wide receiver because you're not getting him and
05:41adding him as the, you know, your starting quarterback that you're going to play 15,
05:4610% at wide receiver. You're not going to do that.
05:49This team is still building itself. Like it's really good. Like you, you don't have the luxury
05:56of building up specifically on one position of your roster. There are holes now. Well,
06:01I guess if you think Brown's the center, not at center, but at guard, left tackle,
06:04number one receiver, is there a number two receiver on this team?
06:08No, who's the number one, a number two receiver. You need to, you need a left tackle. You need a
06:15guard. You need a right tackle, or if Moses is your right tackle, you need a left tackle and a
06:19guard and maybe another center. Yeah, but you definitely need a receiver. I listen, you know,
06:24you sit my six degrees. I played with champ Bailey, champ Bailey played both ways on offense
06:30and defense. Travis Hunter is going to be a quarterback in the NFL that teams will utilize
06:36his ability. Similar to what we saw at Deon Sanders, Charles Woodson. He's a gadget,
06:43gadget guy. What do you say in the Twitch chat?
06:48Boomer 1165 says all of the sudden Travis Hunter can't play wide receiver wiggy.
06:55No, not, not, not, uh, uh, 50% of the time or a hundred percent of the time,
07:01unless that's the position he's going to play tie law. We had tie on tie great corner.
07:06He'll tell you, they try to move him to offense. You don't get enough practice over there
07:12to be able to be a solid receiver. You could be a gadget player because you're running slants and
07:20go routes. Does Mike Rabel maybe believe he can turn him into a, he's going to draft them at four
07:27with the expectation that he's going to be a full-time wide receiver in the NFL that you
07:33could do. If you're saying, Hey, Travis, we're drafting you a number four, but you're playing
07:37wide receiver. Greg, if he could legitimately be a number one receiver in the NFL, he'd be the
07:42number one pick in the draft. That's a good point. He was legit that player. He would be the number
07:49one pick and he's not. I don't think that that's true. Like Abdul Carter is just a better football
07:54player and it's a more important position. And as you've aptly pointed out multiple times,
07:59quarterbacks always go up and cam ward is without a doubt, the best quarterback in the draft. So he
08:04probably will go number one overall. If he could be a shutdown corner and a number one receiver,
08:09he would be the number one pick in the draft. Yeah. If you knew for a fact, he was going to
08:14be like a hall of fame level of both positions. Sure. But you don't know that, but that's not
08:18happening. Was he saying at the combine, was he saying that he w were there reports that he was
08:23telling teams he wanted to play wide receiver? He wants to do both. Like he wants to do exactly
08:27what he did in college, which is do both. And Deion Sanders was the only guy in college that
08:31was going to allow him to do that, which is why he played for every NFL team knows that you can't
08:36do both. That's why they're saying he's going to be a corner because that's his natural position.
08:42That's where he has better skill at is a corner. Is he a great athlete that you can throw jump
08:47balls to and go routes at the college level? Yes. But in the NFL level, that's not going to work
08:53against guys who go against elite wide receivers on a daily basis. This is Tim from Hanover. Hey,
08:59Tim, guys, I love the conversation, man, but you know what? Hunter is the guy. He is unbelievable.
09:07He's a great athlete. He's good at both ways to play. And I know Rabel wants him badly because
09:14he is an unbelievable athlete. Here's the deal with this kid. Look at, look at branch.
09:20Deion branch played both ways when he had to same with Edelman when he had these receivers,
09:27the receivers played defense from Bella. Yeah. Yeah. And that place,
09:36no, it's Troy Brown. Well, one of them, I forget who Troy Brown, there you go.
09:41It's been a while. So my mind is like a little bit off and I get pressure when I
09:45say all in your boys, you know what I mean? So they, so there you go. But I think if they get
09:50him and go forward with this in the draft and then maybe they can get down, what's his name?
09:55Cooper cup at the unbelievable slot middle receiver. That would be over the top and put
10:00him in great shape. See, but the difference between like Edelman and Troy Brown, they were
10:05just like break glass in case of emergency defensive backs. They weren't every down or
10:11two down type of players where a lot of people. And I think this is the problem. A lot of people
10:19saw Travis Hunter play in college and saw him play basically every snap on offense and every
10:24snap on defense and think that, Oh, he can do that in the NFL. If Dion Sanders, who's arguably
10:32one of the greatest cornerbacks to ever step on the field, couldn't do it. Charles Woodson couldn't
10:38do it. Champ Bailey couldn't do it. What makes you think Travis Hunter is going to be able to do it?
10:44Those are all, those are three hall of famous. Yeah. It's not possible. I wouldn't think that
10:50he's going to be 50% offense, 50% defense. I, I could see somebody like Mike Rabel saying,
10:58I am this guy, you know, maybe they've had a conversation. He wants to play wide receiver
11:04and we can make him a, a wide receiver. I did it in college. He can do it in the NFL and there
11:10draft him for that reason. And that position. Well, I see, I understand what you're saying.
11:16As long as you say, and are they going to say that? Like we're drafted Travis Hunter to play
11:23wide receiver. Well, why wouldn't other teams do that when wide receiver is more valuable
11:28than corner in the NFL? So why would other teams go, Hey, Travis, do you mind playing
11:34wide receiver full-time? And if he goes, yeah, they go, we'll take them.
