00:00This afternoon, we're gathered to celebrate the
00:09deep and abiding ties of history, family, and
00:12friendship that bind together Ireland and the
00:14United States of America.
00:16The Irish American patriots have been part of
00:18our national history in our country's earliest days.
00:22Amazing history they have with our country.
00:24Irish Americans fought heroically in our war for
00:28independence, served with honor in the crucible of
00:31the Civil War, and won fame and valor among
00:35Theodore Roosevelt's famous Rough Riders.
00:38They were Rough Riders.
00:40By some estimates, more than 2,000 Irish American
00:43warriors have earned the Congressional Medal of
00:45Honor.
00:46This is an amazing statistic.
00:48The Irish spirit is truly alive and thriving in
00:51America.
00:52And as we see today, the friendship between our
00:55nations is strong, and it's really unbreakable.
00:58And that includes all of you, you know?
00:59It's all of you.
01:01We love you all.
01:04For centuries now, America has been a place of
01:07welcome and opportunity for Irish people.
01:11Our nation's green has been threaded through the rich
01:14tapestry of the United States by almost 32
01:18million Irish Americans.
01:20Their forebears left a very different Ireland to
01:24the one we know today.
01:25Many were fleeing the grinding poverty and
01:28terrible hunger which blighted Ireland in
01:31centuries past.
01:33Mr. President, we are forever grateful for the
01:36United States' contribution to transforming
01:38our island.
01:40And we wish you well in the efforts that you are
01:42making to bring peace to the Ukraine and to the
01:46Middle East and further afield.
01:48We thank you for your leadership and, indeed,
01:51your ongoing friendship to Ireland.
