Some Filipinos 'thankful' while others dispute Duterte's arrest as he departs for The Hague

Some Filipinos said on Wednesday, March 12, that they were "thankful" for the arrest of former President Rodrigo Duterte, while others disputed the move to send him to the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague as part of its probe into his "war on drugs" that defined his presidency.

Duterte's arrest early on Tuesday, March 11, marked the biggest step yet in the ICC's probe into alleged crimes against humanity during an anti-drugs crackdown that killed thousands and drew condemnation around the world.

Durterte's detention follows years of him rebuking and taunting the ICC in profanity-laden speeches since he unilaterally withdrew the Philippines from the court's founding treaty in 2019 as it started looking into allegations of systematic murders of drug dealers on his watch. The ICC, a court of last resort, says it has jurisdiction to investigate alleged crimes that took place while a country was a member. REUTERS VIDEO

00:00I'm thankful because that's what all Filipinos have been wanting to happen for a long time
00:22because of what he did to the EJKs.
00:27That's why his accomplices should be with him,
00:32high-ranking people,
00:35so that they can all pay.
00:40When he was beaten up in other countries,
00:52it was as good as prison.
00:56Because he didn't have the right to be held accountable for his actions.
01:06But he shouldn't be held accountable in other countries.
01:10Here in our country, we have a court that will decide for him.
01:20It's also right for people who need justice for their children's death,
01:28to use him so that other people can be happy.
