00:00Prime Minister, I think it's clear we should just skip a generation.
00:28Alors, bonsoir tout le monde.
00:31Wow, this room, this room is strong.
00:39This room, this room is Canada strong.
00:47Thank you. Thank you, Clio. Thank you, Clio.
00:51And to my wife, Diana, our children, Clio, Tess.
00:57Amelia and Sasha.
00:59Without your support, I wouldn't be standing here.
01:11And like the Prime Minister, without your examples, I wouldn't have a purpose.
01:17And without your love, I wouldn't have the strength that I need for what lies ahead.
02:16May I say that you inspired my family to become liberals, including my father to run as a liberal candidate in Alberta in the 1980s.
02:30Some elections are tougher than others.
02:36And you inspired me. You inspired me over the years.
02:42And now to have an opportunity to continue your tradition of fiscal responsibility, social justice and international leadership.
02:59Prime Minister Trudeau, my time doesn't permit me to recognize all of your accomplishments.
03:11So I'll speak at a higher level.
03:14You have combined strength and compassion every day as a fighter for Canada.
03:21You have led us through some of the hardest challenges that this nation has ever faced.
05:32But I will need help. I will need a lot of help.
05:48And so I'd like to thank Chrystia, Frank and Karina for your energy and ideas and leadership that you have brought to this campaign.
06:03And I would like also to thank those ministers who remained in their posts to serve Canada directly during this time of great peril.
06:15And to the incredible group of Liberal MPs that we have, you are the voices for your communities and you are the conscience of our party.
06:36Thank you for your service.
06:39Now, to give a sense of that service, I'm going to quote from a message that I and Chrystia and Karina, sorry, Karina and Frank, the three of us, the four of us, received from someone called Bob Zettel.
07:00Now, Bob, full disclosure, I know the leader of the opposition is into full disclosure, so I'm going to, full disclosure, full disclosure, just want to get this on the table.
07:13Bob goes to my church. Actually, I go to Bob's church because he goes there a lot more frequently than I do.
07:22Anyways, point is, Bob wrote to the four candidates and he said, I quote, right now everyone sees the main threat as the Trump tariffs, but the far greater challenge will be, as it always has been, to foster unity and a sense of the common good.
07:45There are those who will seek power by dividing us. We'll get to that later on.
07:52And we need, we being the people of Canada, we need you, my fellow candidates, myself, to continue in positions of leadership to promote a united Canada, a commitment, a commitment to common good and the respect and the rule of law throughout the world.
08:17See, I quote Bob because right now all Canadians are being asked to serve in their own ways. We're all being called to stand up for each other and for the Canadian way of life.
08:30So let me ask you, who's ready?
08:39Who's ready to stand up for Canada with me?
08:42100%. Yes. Yes. Yes, Canada. Yes, Canada. The Liberal Party is united and strong and ready to fight to build an even better country.
09:01I feel like everything in my life has helped prepare me for this moment.
09:16Two months ago, I put up my hand to run for leader because I felt we needed big changes, but big changes guided by strong Canadian values.
09:28The values I learned at the dinner table from my parents, Bob and Verley, and my three siblings, Brenda, Sean, and Brian.
09:36Values that I learned at the hockey rinks of Edmonton from my coaches, such as Stormin Norman Lee. He exists. We didn't call him that to his face, by the way, but that was his name.
09:50My parents were teachers, and they stressed the importance of hard work, of community, and of tolerance.
09:59My coaches were volunteers who taught me the importance of teamwork, ambition, and because it's Canada, humility.
10:08Good values. Good values. Canadian values. I brought them with me to university. I kept them close to me as I dealt with crises here in Canada and around the world.
10:28These same values guided me in my work to build strong economies.
10:34And today, I realize that we are facing the most serious crisis of our generation.
10:45Canadians know that new threats demand new ideas and a new plan. They know that new challenges demand new leadership.
10:57Canadians want positive leadership that will end division and help us build together.
11:12And to respond, my government will put into action our plan to build a stronger economy, to create new trading relationships with reliable trading partners.
11:23And to secure our borders.
11:53Now, I am a pragmatist above all. So, when I see that something is not working, I will change it.
12:23So, my government will immediately eliminate the divisive consumer carbon tax on families and farmers and small and medium-sized businesses.
12:35And we will stop the hike in the capital gains tax because we think builders should be incentivized for taking risks and rewarded when they succeed.
12:54Canada needs more of this type of change. Change that puts more money in people's pockets. Change that makes our companies more competitive.
13:07Change that builds the strongest economy in the G7.
13:11Now, there is someone who is trying to do the opposite. There is someone who is trying to weaken our economy.
13:27Donald Trump. Donald Trump. And Donald Trump, as we know, has put, as the Prime Minister just said, unjustified tariffs on what we build, on what we sell, on how we make a living.
13:48He's attacking Canadian families, workers and businesses. And we cannot let him succeed. And we won't. We won't.
14:02I am proud. I am proud of the response of Canadians who are making their voices heard and their wallets felt.
14:11I am grateful for how our provinces are stepping up to the fight because when we are united, we are Canada Strong.
14:22The Canadian government has rightly retaliated and is rightly retaliating with our own tariffs that will have maximum impact in the United States and minimum impact here in Canada.
14:44And my government will keep our tariffs on until the Americans show us respect.
14:50And until they can join us in making credible and reliable commitments to free and fair trade.
15:14As Christa did.
15:17And in the meantime, we will ensure that all the proceeds, all the proceeds from our tariffs will be used to protect our workers.
15:27Les Américains veulent nos ressources, notre eau, notre territoire, notre pays.
15:44Jamais, oui. Pensez-y. Pensez-y. Ça va détruire notre façon d'être.
15:53Les Américains veulent nos ressources, notre eau, notre territoire, notre pays.
16:01Pensez-y.
17:42Look.
17:57We didn't ask for this fight. We didn't ask for this fight.
18:02The Canadians are always ready when someone else drops the gloves.
18:06So the Americans, they should make no mistake. In trade, as in hockey, Canada will win.
19:13Now, Donald Trump is trying to weaken our economy.
19:23But there's someone else who, if he succeeds, will weaken our economy.
19:28It's Pierre Poliev.
19:32Pierre Poliev just doesn't get it.
19:39He is the type of lifelong politician, and I've seen this type around the world,
19:46a lifelong politician who worships at the altar of the free market,
19:50despite never having made a payroll himself.
19:59And now, in the face of President Trump's threats,
20:06Pierre Poliev still, still refuses to get his security clearance.
20:13At a time when our national security is under threat and has never been before.
20:21At a time of immense economic insecurity, he would undermine the Bank of Canada.
20:29Mr. Poliev wants to close Radio-Canada and CBC.
20:38At a time when disinformation and foreign interference are in full swing.
20:47He insults our mayors and ignores the First Nations when it's time to fight.
20:54He puts an end to international aid when the democracy and the rights of the people are in danger around the world.
21:05And he will burn our planet.
21:12Pierre Poliev would let our planet burn.
21:21This is not leadership.
21:24It's ideology.
21:26It's ideology that betrays what we as Canadians value.
21:30Each other.
21:32It's an ideology that also represents a fundamental misunderstanding of how the economy works.
21:39Now, unlike Pierre Poliev, I've actually worked in the private sector.
21:44I know.
21:46I know.
21:48I know.
21:49I know how the world works.
21:51And I know how it can be made to work better for all of us.
21:56And that knowledge is especially useful now in the service of Canadians when we must build a new economy and create new trading relationships.
22:10Let me tell you something else that we know that Pierre Poliev doesn't.
22:16We know that markets don't have values.
22:20People do.
22:22And we know, we know as Liberals, that it's our job, our job to make markets, to make the economy work for all Canadians.
22:32These are the most powerful tool we've ever invented.
22:36They can find solutions to our greatest problems.
22:39And when the private sector, when the markets are governed well, they deliver great jobs and stronger growth faster than anything.
22:47But markets are also indifferent to human suffering.
22:52And they are blind to that.
22:54So when they're not governed well, or not at all, they will deliver enormous wealth for the lucky few and hard times for the rest.
23:05And in this crisis, in this crisis, we must help those who are most in need.
23:13That's the right thing to do.
23:15That's the fair thing to do.
23:17That is the Canadian thing to do.
23:20That is what makes us strong.
23:47So, so Donald Trump thinks, thinks he can weaken us with his plan to divide and conquer.
23:58Pierre Poilievre's plan will leave us divided and ready to be conquered.
24:05Because a person who worships at the altar of Donald Trump will kneel before him, not stand up to him.
24:23Pierre Poilievre's, Pierre Poilievre's slogans are not solutions, his anger is an action, his division is in strength.
24:31Division won't win a trade war.
24:35Division won't pay the rent or the mortgage.
24:39Division won't bring down the price of groceries.
24:43Division won't make Canada strong.
25:55Choisissons fort, Canada fort.
26:06I've learned a few things from long experience in crises.
26:11And the first is that plan beats no plan.
26:15And you need to distinguish what you can change from what you can't.
26:21We can't change Donald Trump.
26:24We can't change him.
26:36And we can.
26:39And because we're masters in our own home,
26:41we can control our economic destiny with a plan that puts more money in your pockets.
26:48A plan that will ensure your government spends less so Canada can invest more.
26:54A plan that builds millions of homes.
27:01A plan that makes us an energy superpower in both clean and conventional energy.
27:08A plan that creates new trade corridors with reliable partners.
27:15A plan that creates one Canadian economy, not 13.
27:21Because in Canada, we are stronger when we're united.
27:27We can give ourselves far, far more than Donald Trump can ever take away.
27:38But it will, it will take extraordinary efforts.
27:44It won't be business as usual.
27:47We will have to do things we haven't imagined before at speeds we didn't think possible.
27:53We will do it.
27:55We will do it for the common good so that everyone, everyone benefits.
28:00Everyone benefits.
28:06You know, I do care about the economy.
28:11But it's not because I'm an economist.
28:14It's because I care about people.
28:18That's why I'm a Liberal.
28:20That's why we are Liberals.
28:22We know, we know that the value of a strong economy starts with workers who have good jobs,
28:35well paid today and brighter futures for young people tomorrow.
28:41We know, as Liberals, that we can't redistribute what we don't have.
28:50We know that we can't be strong abroad if we are weak at home.
29:00And we know that we can't build a better future if we can't manage the present.
29:11So, we need a strong economy.
29:14We need a strong economy.
29:16But when we're fighting for a strong economy, we're fighting for good Canadian health care for everyone.
29:25We are fighting for strong support for our seniors who built this country.
29:30We are fighting for child care for young families that they put in place.
29:37We are fighting for dental care and pharma care for everyone who needs it.
29:41We are fighting for rights.
29:44We are fighting for a strong economy so we can create a more sustainable world for our children and grandchildren.
29:52And we will deliver.
30:12I know, I know that these are dark days.
30:19Dark days brought on by a country we can no longer trust.
30:24We are getting over the shock.
30:28But let us never forget the lessons.
30:31We have to look after ourselves.
30:36And we have to look out for each other.
30:39We need to pull together in the tough days ahead.
30:46And so, to those families watching this evening in Fort Smith, in Edmonton, and across every community in Canada,
30:57I promise you this.
30:59Together, we can and we will get through this crisis.
31:04We can and we will come out stronger than ever.
31:13And we will because Canada is built on the strength of its people.
31:21From our mines to our ports.
31:24From our logging roads to our city streets.
31:27We're strongest when we're united, when we're one economy, not 13.
31:31When we can cheer for different teams and still be on one team when it counts.
31:37When we come together, when we come together, we build things that last.
31:43Because we are Canada Strong.
31:48Vive le Canada!
31:54It's time to win!
32:01I built my soul on rock and roll, and someone told me that kids don't rock no more.
32:12Oh, oh, oh, oh.
32:15It's time to win!
32:17I built my soul on rock and roll, and someone told me that kids don't rock no more.
32:22Oh, oh, oh, oh.
