00:00The United States has been Ukraine's main military supplier since Moscow launched its
00:05offensive in 2022, accounting for nearly half of the military aid to Ukraine.
00:14But after a dramatic televised dispute between Donald Trump and Volodymyr Zelensky in the
00:18Oval Office, the U.S. has announced a pause to military aid to Ukraine, putting pressure
00:23on Zelensky to agree to peace negotiations with Russia.
00:26I don't think you'd be a tough guy without the United States, and your people are very
00:29brave.
00:30But you're either going to make a deal or we're out.
00:33You don't have the cards.
00:35Although Ukraine's allies, including the U.S., EU, and U.K., have pledged $180 billion in
00:41military aid since the start of the war, only $139 billion has been actually delivered or
00:46embarked for weapons or equipment.
00:49The U.S. military aid package was approved under Joe Biden's administration, and while
00:53it has mostly been shelled out, there was still equipment and weapons to be shipped.
00:58Those deliveries have now been suspended by Trump.
01:01The $69 billion Washington has spent to date is a far cry from the $350 billion Trump has
01:07repeatedly claimed.
01:08Well, I just think you should be more appreciative because this country has stuck with them through
01:13thick and thin.
01:14We've given them much more than Europe, and Europe should have given more than us because
01:18as you know, that's right there.
01:19That's the border.
01:20Trump's rapprochement with Moscow and decision to halt military assistance to Kiev has stunned
01:25allies.
01:26Hours after the U.S. announced the pause, EU chief Ursula von der Leyen presented a
01:30plan to mobilize some $834 billion for Europe's defense and to provide military support for
01:36Ukraine.
01:38This will help member states to pool demand and to buy together.
01:45And of course, with this equipment, member states can massively step up their support
01:52to Ukraine.
01:53Like Ukraine, European partners have been excluded from U.S.-Russian negotiations towards
01:57a potential truce, prompting fears any deal proposed will be on Moscow's terms.
02:15The freezing of U.S. military aid to Ukraine leaves dangerous weak spots in its defense
02:23against Russia's invasion.
02:25Experts say European allies will struggle to plug these gaps.
02:29U.S. exports are considered indispensable for obtaining the satellites, drones and other
02:34aircraft needed for spying effectively on enemy positions.
02:45Ukraine also needs sophisticated air defense guns to shoot down the barrage of missiles
03:02and drones that Russia fires daily at its towns and infrastructure.
03:08It has seven U.S.-made Patriot air defense systems provided by the U.S., Germany and
03:12Romania.
03:42Since the pause on aid to Ukraine, Europe now has to contemplate the stark prospect
03:52of U.S. withdrawing longer-term support.
03:55But a broad consensus has emerged.
03:58Europe needs to significantly ramp up its military spending to bolster its defense against
04:02Russia — a key demand from Trump's administration towards its NATO allies.
