New study reveals top European countries to beat cost of living burden for singles

Living alone often means much higher costs. A new study identifies the best places for singles considering to relocate with the aim of increasing their purchasing power.

00:10Single people living alone face higher costs of living,
00:14a financial burden that's also known as singles tax.
00:18Swedish credit comparison agency Credwise developed an index
00:23that takes into account annual net earnings and local cost of living
00:28to establish which countries offer single people the best purchasing power.
00:35Switzerland is in the top spot. It has one of the highest cost of living in Europe
00:40but also the best net salaries on average over 85,000 euros
00:47that would allow a single person to save up to 34,000 euros annually.
00:53Countries like the Netherlands and Germany ranked high despite lower average earnings
01:00thanks to a great balance between income and cost of living.
01:04Nordic countries also performed well with Iceland fifth and Norway seventh.
01:11Single adult households account for approximately 80 million in the EU,
01:17just over half of the total.
01:20In the past decade the rate of households with single adults without children
01:25rose by 21 percent, the fastest growing in the EU.
