00:00In the 1990s, Japan's new high-speed bullet trains ran into an unexpected problem.
00:04As they entered tunnels at high speeds, they pushed the air forward, compressing it inside
00:09and forcing it out the other side with a loud boom that disturbed nearby residents.
00:12One of the engineers, who also happened to be a birdwatcher,
00:15noticed how kingfishers dive into water with barely a splash because of their long,
00:19streamlined beak. So, they redesigned the train's nose to mimic the kingfisher's shape,
00:24eliminating the tunnel boom.
