00:00Two beavers from Scotland were reintroduced into the wild in England for the first time
00:06in centuries on Wednesday. UK Minister for Nature, Mary Cray, was present at the release
00:12ceremony. The reintroduction is seen as vital for restoring rivers and wetlands, tackling
00:18environmental issues and supporting national biodiversity goals.
00:23In terms of our freshwater habitats, restoring those beavers do more than any other species.
00:28So the activities that they do just to get by in their daily life, building dams, gnawing
00:34trees, opening up freshwater wetland areas, this really brings back a huge number of other
00:40species.
00:41However, the historic release has raised concerns among some farmers and landowners who worry
00:47that the rodents could cause flooding in their fields and damage valuable agricultural land.
00:55Studies have stated that beaver releases will only be allowed if they are well managed,
01:00conducted gradually, and include proper consultation with local landowners.
