President Zelensky has sought to mend ties with President Trump after last week’s dramatic row in the Oval Office. However, he did not offer an explicit apology, something that the White House is said to be demanding before talks can resume.
President Trump accused President Zelensky of “gambling with World War Three” in a heated Oval Office exchange on Friday, the two men were nominally in the same room to discuss access to rocks deep under Ukraine’s sunflower fields and steppe.
Now, after the relations between the two allies imploded live on television, the mineral deal that Zelensky travelled more than 20 hours to Washington to sign hangs in the balance.
Scott Bessent, the US treasury secretary, who delivered an early draft of the deal in Kyiv in February, said on Sunday: “We have to see if President Zelensky wants to proceed.”
