President Donald Trump signed an executive order Saturday making English the official language of the United States. The order rescinds a 2000 directive by former President Bill Clinton that required federal agencies and recipients of federal funds to provide services for individuals with limited English proficiency. While the order allows federal agencies to maintain their current language policies, it encourages new Americans to adopt English to enhance opportunities. More than half of U.S. states have already designated English as their official language, though the federal government had never previously done so.
