In June 2011, I embarked on a life-changing journey to the Indonesian island of Sumatra to explore the myth of Orang Pendek and meet the Orang Rimba, also known as the "Children of the Inner Forest." These people lead a life almost untouched by the modern world and have a deep connection to the jungle and its spirits.
Our adventure began in Jakarta and took us through dense forests and challenging terrains to Jambi province, where the Orang Rimba reside. We faced challenges along the way, but our determination and curiosity drove us forward.
When I finally reached the Orang Rimba, I was greeted with both curiosity and skepticism. We shared songs and stories, slowly breaking the ice. We learned about their matriarchal society, their belief in deities embodied by animals, and their struggle to preserve their way of life in a rapidly changing world.
The Orang Rimba face immense challenges due to deforestation and modern influences. We met Secola Rimba, a local organization working to educate and support the tribe. We heard stories of their fight to preserve their culture and protect their home from external threats.
Join us on our adventure and experience the Orang Rimba firsthand. Watch the video and be inspired to seek your own adventures and support the preservation of these amazing cultures.
