Australia begins clean-up at Wilkes Station in Antarctica after environmental concerns

An initial clean-up has been conducted at Wilkes Station after a French inspection team last year said it posed a "clear risk" to the Antarctic environment. The base was abandoned in 1969, leaving behind a significant amount of legacy waste, including old fuel drums and asbestos-riddled buildings.
