00:00I'd like to end with something.
00:02As you all know...
00:03James, as you were just about to do, before you go on...
00:05You know what, James?
00:06I'm feeling generous.
00:07Go ahead.
00:09I'll take it.
00:10Thank you, Caroline.
00:11Sure.
00:12I wanted to ask about...
00:13Don't make me regret this.
00:15I wanted to ask about the Macron visit and the Russia-Ukraine talks in general.
00:19Sure.
00:20It was pretty clear to my eye that President Macron was performing a kind of delicate dance,
00:24lavishing praise on the President while seeking, in his own remarks, to try to bind President
00:28Trump to positions and even specific language that the President has not committed to heretofore.
00:34One of the most bracing comments from President Macron was when he said that the deal that
00:40President Trump is negotiating with the Russians must not be, quote, a surrender for Ukraine.
00:47All of the public points that we have heard from President Trump, from Secretary Hegseth,
00:51and from other administration officials talking about these negotiations have averred to,
00:56quite openly, to concessions from the Ukrainians that will have to be made, the minerals deal,
01:01the abandonment of their NATO ambitions, and other elements.
01:05So far, we have not heard any administration officials suggest a single concession that
01:09the Russians should be prepared to make, and so I wonder if you could assure us, at a minimum,
01:14that this negotiation process will not be as one-sided as the Europeans seem to think
01:19it is, that in fact President Putin will also be made to engage in some concessions to reach
01:24this deal.
01:26Well, I think the President knows how to make a deal better than anyone who has ever assumed
01:29the office of the American presidency.
01:32And in order to make a deal, you have to bring both sides to the table, and typically when
01:37you make a good deal, both sides leave that table a little bit unhappy.
01:40I'm not going to outline the concessions that the President and his team are engaged in
01:45discussing.
01:46These are obviously ongoing negotiations, and it would be unwise of me to impede them
01:50from this podium.
01:52But the President has made significant improvements in ending this conflict.
01:57He is committed to seeing an end to the war.
01:59He wants to see the bloodshed and the killing stopped.
02:01He wants to stop seeing young men being killed and slaughtered.
02:06This has been going on for far too long.
02:08The President inherited this mess because of the incompetence of the previous administration,
02:12and he's committed to fixing it.
02:14And he's made some of those concessions clear, but I'm not going to get ahead of him on additional
02:18ones.
02:19He is wholeheartedly committed to striking a peace deal in Russia and Ukraine, also in
02:24the Middle East.
02:25Thank you very much, guys.
02:26Good to see you.
02:27We'll see you later.
