October 1 1949 After years of struggle and revolutionary commitment Mao Zedong proclaims the advent of the Peoples Republic of China By coming to power he had only one ambition which was to restore his countrys legendary power and former glory However if the Great Helmsman opened a new era he did not bring his country from immobility and confinement to the rank of a great world power.
