00:00We begin tonight with what could prove a significant development in the search for the missing
00:04Beaumont children.
00:06Investigators have made an unexpected discovery at the old Castelloy site, a slab of hardened
00:12sand buried beneath tonnes of dirt.
00:16Breaking ground in the hope of cracking South Australia's most mysterious cold case.
00:27This latest effort at the old Castelloy site in North Plimpton owned by the prime suspect
00:32Harry Phipps, drawing nationwide interest and a crowd of spectators as excavators moved
00:38in.
00:42After spending hours removing topsoil they finally hit what was the ground's surface
00:48in 1966, the year Jane, Arna and Grant Beaumont went missing from Glenelg Beach.
00:54In afternoon an unexpected find for the investigating team when they came across this large hardened
01:01slab.
01:02At this stage we don't know, we really don't know, but it's hard to say, we don't know
01:06why it's there, so we've just got to keep digging.
01:09At first it was thought to be concrete but now they believe it's a hardening material
01:13used to compact sand.
01:15We are going through each and every bit of earth, if there was something in the earth
01:21we'll find it.
01:22An entire state holding its breath.
01:25We just want them to be found and just have some closure for it and be able to all just
01:30go, you know, these beautiful little children are at peace.
01:33It would be good to get closure, absolutely, absolutely.
01:37Hannah Ford, Seven News.
01:40Let's go live to Hannah and Hannah we could get some real answers as early as tomorrow.
01:48That's right Will, it's tools down tonight but crews will be back early in the morning
01:53and we may know by this time tomorrow if the bodies of the missing Beaumont children are
01:57in fact buried here at the old Castelloy site.
02:01It'll be a big day.
02:03Investigators will have to dig through another two metres of dirt.
02:06If this site at North Plimpton can crack the case, that's the depth they'll need to reach.
02:10They also intend to revisit the section dug up by police back in 2018 but tomorrow the
02:16machinery will be going even deeper.
02:19So for now, we wait and watch with hope.
