The minimum wage is not determined by the Poverty Line Income (PLI), says Deputy Human Resources Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Rahman Mohamad.

Speaking during Minister’s Question Time in the Dewan Rakyat on Tuesday (Feb 25), he explained that the minimum wage serves as a basic salary to ensure workers and their families can meet essential needs.

Abdul Rahman added that the minimum wage is reviewed every two years, with input from representatives of the Finance Ministry, Economy Ministry, Sarawak Economic Planning Unit, Sabah Science, Technology and Innovation Ministry, as well as organisations such as the Malaysian Employers Federation, trade unions, and economic experts.

00:00through the Government Minimum Wage 2024.
00:05Minimum Wage RM1,709 is an individual salary
00:10to ensure that workers and families can meet basic needs.
00:15On the other hand, based on the Malaysian Regulatory Authority, or DOSEM,
00:19the PJK poverty line refers to poverty,
00:24which includes PJK, PGK, food and PGK is not food.
00:30The current PGK figure, in 2022, is RM2,589 per month.
00:39Therefore, the minimum wage cannot be compared to PGK.
00:44However, in the determination of the minimum wage,
00:47PGK is one of the main indicators.
00:51Based on the implementation of the six Minimum Wage Regulations,
00:55the minimum wage has increased evenly
00:58between RM500 to RM600 per year
01:02depending on the rate as an economic indicator
01:05used in the formula for setting the minimum wage.
01:09To ensure the minimum wage,
01:11workers can be promoted in the coming period
01:15to the Summa Melayu Majlis Peninggan Gaji Negara, MPJN,
01:19as well as the Minister of Finance,
01:22Ministry of Economy, Planning Unit,
01:25Sarawak Economy, Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation Sabah,
01:29Malaysian Employers' Federation,
01:33workers from the unions,
01:36and economic experts will carry out the re-study of the Minimum Wage Regulation.
01:42This re-study will be carried out at least once every two years,
01:47as required under the Minimum Wage Regulation 2011,
01:52Article 732.
01:54This study process involves the evaluation of the Indicator of Economic Equality,
01:59including basic indicators such as the income line,
02:03poverty, PGK, and median wage,
02:07as well as indicators such as productivity,
02:10unemployment rate, and IHP price index.
02:15In addition, there will be a session on the implementation of the Minimum Wage Regulation
02:18among the workers, employers, and other stakeholders
02:23to get an overview and feedback on the impact of the Minimum Wage Regulation.
