01:37Pakistan champions trophy meltdown.
01:43Now there's always a meltdown in India or Pakistan depending on which team wins.
01:48But yesterday was a historic meltdown in Pakistan after that country's defeat in the champions trophy.
01:56It's something that has broken the internet, the memes have not stopped flowing.
02:02And we're going to get to the bottom of it right here on 5 live.
02:04Thanks as always for being with me. I'm Shiv, let's get you straight to the headlines.

03:32After India beat Pakistan in the champions trophy yesterday, on Sunday that is,
03:38social media, the internet has gone into a tizzy like perhaps never before.
03:45Now meltdowns, hissy fits, rona dhona, all of this is par for the course when it comes to India versus Pakistan.
03:53But yesterday marked a milestone in just how bad a meltdown can actually be.
04:00The reactions from Pakistan have all gone completely viral.
04:04It continues to be the top trending story and culturally it seems to mark some kind of a milestone
04:13in how the two countries have been reacting to playing cricket with each other.
04:18From former Pakistan cricketers to fans, all have been calling out Pakistan's abysmal show.
04:26Former Pakistan cricketers have hailed Virat Kohli's stun from television studios to the streets.
04:31Pakistan has gone into mourning over a single game.
05:02Rahe gaye.
05:05Rahe gaye, chal hai koi baat nahi.
05:08This is our panel.
05:10Ab toh aadat si hai.
05:13Programme baad gaye.
05:16Again aapne dekha hai Virat Kohli ko agar koi yeh badaadein ki aapne Pakistan khalaab match khilna hai toh
05:22wo bilkul tyari karke aayenge, phir wo show karke jayenge.
05:25I'm in hats off to him.
05:27He is like a superstar.
05:29He is a white ball run chaser.
05:31Modern day great hai.
05:33Isme koi shak nahi hai.
05:35I'm really happy for him.
05:37Reason why?
05:39He is an honest guy.
05:41Usne 14,000 runs bhi aaj poore kar liye hain.
05:43Usne pata nahi aage usne so so karne hain.
05:45Main toh chahta huon kare kyunke it's really important this guy gets it all.
05:49I'm really really happy for him.
05:51Wish him all the best.
05:52I think he deserves all, all the praises.
05:55Seriously.
05:57I mean like the way he came out.
05:59Flawless links kheli hai.
06:01Otherwise he played perfectly.
06:03Aur thoda sabar kar jo.
06:05Usko runs karne do.
06:07Kyun maari jaare ho.
06:09Usko show banane do.
06:11Saath wale aage chakke chakke maari jaare ho.
06:13Relax karo.
06:15Uska milestone hai.
06:17Let him enjoy it.
06:19But anyways, the team is really happy for him and wish him best of luck.
06:20We started with Pakistani cricketers as you just heard.
06:23And fans expressing their abject disappointment with the team.
06:27Now disappointment, like I said, it's not the first time this has happened on either side.
06:31But this was really a spectacle for the ages.
06:35And it hasn't even stopped now.
06:37For instance, a Pakistani fan was caught switching teams.
06:41As he witnessed the match slipping away.
06:44The fan put on a Team India jersey over the Pakistan team T-shirt
06:48that he was originally wearing.
06:50He was cheered on by Indian fans as he changed the jerseys.
06:54Take a look at this.
06:55Take a look at this.
07:16Another Pakistani social media user vented his frustration with the poor performance of the team
07:21with a hilarious take saying
07:22Pakistani fans have no option but to pray that other teams don't perform well
07:27or refuse to play against Pakistan altogether.
07:53After that, Bangladesh should defeat New Zealand.
07:58New Zealand should lose to India.
08:01India should lose to Bangladesh.
08:04We should win against Bangladesh.
08:06And India should refuse to play with us.
08:09And apart from this, we should talk to the ICC.
08:13And if there is a storm, earthquake or tsunami in the world,
08:16then we will have a chance to go to the next stage.
08:22We can play the semi-finals.
08:24So, it's simple as that.
08:29Well, that wasn't the only thing.
08:31Even before the game against India self-styled Pakistani analysts
08:35were floating conspiracy theories about Team India's plan to beat Pakistan.
08:39Listen in to this absolutely ridiculous clip that was doing the rounds.
08:52Oh, I see.
09:15But there should be a solution.
09:17Yes, there should be a solution.
09:19We should pray as much as possible.
09:34And they were performing so good out of nowhere.
09:49Sure.
09:57Sure.
10:00Former Pakistan cricketer Shoaib Akhtar also had some very harsh words asking
10:06where's the talent in the Pakistan cricket team.
10:11Would you rate Aiyar to Kritil Shah?
10:13Would you rate Rohit Sharma to Fakhar Zaman to Rizwan?
10:20What's the talent?
10:22Talent is displayed.
10:24You have to talk about it.
10:26You don't become a star by talking about it.
10:28You have to make runs.
10:30I've been hearing that talent has increased in the last 20-30 years.
10:33No problem.
10:35If it was there, we would have seen it for the last 10 years.
10:37With Pakistan's defeat, certain fans in the country cheered for Virat Kohli yesterday
10:44as he hit the winning runs and also scored his 51st one-day century, that too on the last ball.
10:51Virat Kohli's century, Virat Kohli's century.
10:54Virat Kohli's century, Virat Kohli's century.
10:57Virat Kohli's century, Virat Kohli's century.
11:03And we've handpicked some of our favourite reactions from Pakistani fans
11:09after yesterday's match. Take a look at this.
11:12Our team never even touched 250.
11:15At least if our team lost, they wouldn't let the century of Kohli happen.
11:20If they weren't good in batting, they could have saved the match through bowling.
11:25So my request to the chairman of PCB is to bring back the old faces so that we can improve our match.
11:33He had such a bad performance in fielding as well.
11:35I think he should be trained again.
11:37And he should be accountable for how he played with people's emotions.
11:41He didn't have hard work, fitness or skills.
11:44That's why we supported India. We know that you can't beat their calibre.
12:14What explains that?
12:19Shiv, I think it's because Pakistani fans have surrendered.
12:23This is a trend that's been going on for very long.
12:26India has always held the wood over Pakistan.
12:29But I think this is that final straw.
12:32I think this was that moment where they've completely surrendered.
12:35And they've realised the fact that there is daylight between India and Pakistan.
12:39Of course, when the match started, India started off as favourites.
12:42But the Pakistani team was quietly confident.
12:45They would refer to various other things in the past.
12:48We have to have a good team. We fight back when things aren't doing really well.
12:52Those are the things that they would talk about.
12:54But I think they've finally surrendered and have made peace with the fact that at the moment, there is no competition.
13:00We keep calling it as a contest.
13:02It's actually a no contest between India and Pakistan.
13:04The only thing that Pakistan is better at, Shiv, I'll have to say, is their sense of humour.
13:09Their self-deprecating humour that you see on the internet.
13:12They're good when it comes to taking a few jokes on them.
13:16Because that's where the team finds itself in at the moment.
13:19Very interesting. Vikrant, you've seen so much of this over the years.
13:24Breaking of TVs has become like a meme by itself.
13:30As a metaphor for how Pakistan reacts to a loss in a cricket match against India.
13:36In your view, why do you think that so much of it has happened this time?
13:40Total surrender by the team?
13:47I think they've gone down. Shiv, they've gone down.
13:50Like Nikhil said, there's no context.
13:53There's no contest, but there is context in the India-Pakistan series.
13:57As in the marketing. The ICC needs that. Everybody needs that.
14:01They make money out of one game.
14:03So they hype up the game to the extent that there are people who are made to believe that Pakistan can win this time.
14:11See, India and Pakistan, if they're going to play 10 games, one game Pakistan will win.
14:15I mean, there'll be one bad day for India. There'll be one good day for Pakistan.
14:19And I think beyond that, obviously, people in Pakistan were also aware of the fact that India is a far superior side.
14:28It's just that maybe they were hoping for India to have a bad day.
14:32I mean, like, look at their batting.
14:34The best partnership that they had for the third wicket was the slowest that they batted.
14:40I mean, the best part of their game yesterday was the slowest that they batted.
14:45So I think it is just a reflection of the country.
14:47In cricket, I mean, if you look at the batting or the bowling or the players, they're just looking to survive.
14:55If they're just looking to survive, they will never be the champions that they were in those times.
15:01Will there be a time, Nikhil, you know, if it was no contest this time and, you know, India is far ahead
15:08and it's all about, you know, sort of tapping into that whole India versus Pakistan sentiment that is so potent,
15:14you know, will there be a time when it will no longer be sellable?
15:19That's a good question, Shiv.
15:21And maybe the time is now.
15:23Maybe we're reaching a stage where people have begun to realize that it's not that rivalry that, you know,
15:30we had for the longest time, you know, the 80s, 90s, even early 2000.
15:34There was a very close rivalry.
15:36I think why it's sellable at the moment, Shiv, is because of the history, you know,
15:41the past history between the two countries.
15:43Also, that they did have a lot of classics over the years.
15:46But slowly and steadily, people are realizing.
15:48In fact, if you ask most hardcore cricket fans, they'll tell you, especially from the Indian side,
15:53that the rivalry that they most look forward to is India versus Australia
15:56and not so much India versus Pakistan.
15:58That's already begun to happen.
15:59Correct.
16:00You saw the game here in Dubai and it wasn't chock-a-block, as in it wasn't 100% full, the stadium.
16:05Yes, you had about 80%, 90% occupancy, but not 100%.
16:10And that's also a rarity for an India-Pakistan encounter.
16:13I think now from both sides, there is this realization that it is a no contest.
16:17It's only because of the arch-rivalry sort of a status that these two countries have in the past
16:22that they're continuing to sell this game.
16:24Yes.
16:25Dare I say, when India play a tougher contest ahead in this tournament,
16:28you're going to be playing New Zealand.
16:30You might play a South Africa and Australia in a semi-final.
16:32I think that will attract far more interest than this India-Pakistan game.
16:36Same question to you, Vikrant.
16:38Do you think India-Pakistan is still sellable in the context of money, viewership, and things like that?
16:45Or is it time to move on to the real rivalry in the room?
16:54Well, there'll be the ICC World T20 next year in India.
17:00The broadcaster, the ICC, the marketing gurus will again drum up this rivalry.
17:06They would say, there's a chance for Pakistan to take revenge.
17:10In Pakistan, the news channels and the fans would hope that Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli
17:16are no longer playing the T20.
17:18Maybe Pakistan can win this time.
17:20So, you know, we won't leave that rivalry to go away.
17:23The marketing aspect of the rivalry to go away,
17:27a lot of money is riding on just one game.
17:31I mean, the broadcasters paid some $750 million for this Champions Trophy.
17:36And like Nikhil said, you know, the reflection of the cricket that you're seeing in this Champions Trophy
17:44is that for the first India-Bangladesh game, and mind you, at India-Bangladesh game
17:49at the Dubai International Stadium, you had barely 3,000 to 5,000 people coming in.
17:55You just had 3,000 to 5,000 people coming in to watch the game.
17:59The Pakistan game was houseful.
18:01There's this India-New Zealand next week, maybe 50-50.
18:05Which means that everybody needs some slice of that pie.
18:10And the pie is the India versus Pakistan game.
18:12So as of now, still very, very marketable.
18:15Lots of money riding on it.
18:17You know, the seats are being filled for sure compared to maybe some other matches.
18:22So is it going to change anytime soon?
18:25Doesn't look like it, but, well, the Internet is certainly having some fun,
18:29apart from, of course, the broadcasters themselves.
18:31Thanks so much, Nikhil and Vikrant, for joining me on that.
18:34Interesting to see the trajectory of India versus Pakistan.
18:39But it's not all fun and games, you know, pertaining to cricket in Pakistan,
18:44because the country's ISI, or its intelligence bureau, rather,
18:48has issued a high alert cautioning security forces
18:52about a suspected plot by active covert groups
18:56who are planning, they say, to abduct foreign guests
18:59attending the Champions Trophy 2025.
19:02Some of the matches are going to be held, remember, in Pakistan.
19:05The terror outfit is said to be specifically targeting Chinese and Arab nationals
19:10conducting surveillance at ports, airports, offices, and residential areas
19:14frequently used by visitors from these countries.
19:17According to intelligence reports, the Islamic State Khorasan province
19:22operatives plan to rent properties on the outskirts of Pakistani cities
19:27as safe houses, deliberately choosing locations without camera surveillance
19:32and accessible only by rickshaw or motorcycle.
19:35The groups, they say, the intelligence bureau of Pakistan says,
19:38intends to kidnap individuals between safe houses under the cover of night
19:43to evade security forces.
19:45Meanwhile, Afghanistan's intelligence agency, GDI,
19:48has also issued alerted authorities to possible Islamic State attacks
19:54on key locations and has stepped up efforts to track missing operatives
19:58linked to this group.
20:00Now, remember, the ISIS's most lethal branch, the IS Khorasan,
20:04has declared cricket as a Western intellectual war against Muslims.
20:09The group has argued that the sport promotes propaganda
20:12conflicting with Islam's jihadist ideology.
20:15Remember, the Indian team had refused to travel to Pakistan
20:18for this current champion's trophy, citing safety concerns.
20:22Hence, their matches were relocated to Dubai,
20:25despite Pakistan technically hosting the tournament.
20:30Let me bring in India today's Gaurav Sawant for more on this.
20:34Gaurav, Pakistan's own, you know, intelligence agency,
20:39warning of an Islamic State Khorasan plot to kidnap, you know, cricket fans,
20:44maybe even target cricketers during the ongoing champion's trophy.
20:48You know, while I am skeptical that the intelligence is emanating
20:53from within Pakistan, obviously it's rooted in some measure of reality
20:58given that Pakistan's own homegrown terror agencies
21:02have attacked cricketers and cricket fans in the past.
21:05Shiv, you're absolutely right.
21:07You talk about the 2009 attack that had taken place
21:10on the Sri Lankan cricket team at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore.
21:13So bad was the situation that Pakistan Air Force had to fly in its helicopters
21:18and the Sri Lankan team had to be heli-lifted out of that area.
21:22And keeping that in mind, for this champion's trophy,
21:27Pakistan had made tremendous efforts with multiple agencies deployed on ground
21:32and the Pakistan Army and their quick reaction teams on standby.
21:37But somewhere down the line, Pakistan is apprehensive.
21:40All their deployment is not enough and yet, because Pakistan knows,
21:45since Pakistan ISI and Army has trained these terrorists or their dads in the past,
21:49they know that these people could still attack and they could still attack
21:53and that first line would be devastated or decimated
21:57in a khutkush hamla, as they call it, the suicide attack.
22:01So that is their biggest apprehension.
22:03Their apprehension is a foreign cricket team could be targeted,
22:06foreign players or fans could be targeted, or their achilles heel.
22:11They haven't been able to protect the Chinese assets
22:14and Chinese citizens and civilians have repeatedly been targeted.
22:19Now there's an apprehension.
22:20Even Arabs in Pakistan could be targeted.
22:23So that's Pakistan's worst nightmare.
22:25The terrorists they train, whether it's ISKP or TTP, Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan
22:30and gave them amnesty when Imran Khan was Prime Minister,
22:33they're there in large numbers and they could strike.
22:36That's the apprehension, Shiv.
22:37Gaurav, thanks very much for throwing light on that.
22:40Remember, all of this is of Pakistan's own making.
22:43So whether these intelligence alerts are accurate or ambiguous,
22:47they are rooted in a context of this threat being very much real
22:53and not just someone's imagination.
22:55Cricketers and cricket fans have literally been attacked
22:58by Pakistan's own terror groups in the years gone by.
23:01Therefore, we'll keep a very close eye on what happens during the Champions Trophy.
23:05Gaurav, thanks very much for that.
