Pope Francis showing "early signs" of kidney failure, according to Vatican

The Holy See has announced that blood tests showed early signs of kidney failure in Pope Francis, who has been in hospital battling a complex lung infection for over a week.

00:00It is a quiet night at Gemelli Hospital in Rome, where Pope Francis has been battling
00:07pneumonia and a complex lung infection for the past week.
00:11But according to latest statements from the Vatican, the 88-year-old pontiff is now also
00:15in an early stage of kidney failure.
00:20Pope Francis remains in critical conditions and doctors say that he is showing the early
00:24signs of kidney failure, but that it is under control.
00:28They say he has had no more of those crises, those respiratory crises that dogged him all
00:34day Saturday.
00:36He is continuing though to receive high flows of supplemental oxygen.
00:40They say he is alert, responsive and even managed to attend mass today, but the prognosis
00:47remains guarded.
00:49Pope Francis was initially hospitalized on 14 February for bronchitis.
00:54He then developed pneumonia in both lungs.
00:56Concern for the head of the Catholic Church also stems from the fact that he had part
01:00of one lung removed when he was younger.
01:03The Pope has experienced a series of health problems over the past few years, ranging
01:07from respiratory infections to colon surgery.
01:11His current hospital stay is the fourth one since 2021.
