00:00Hit it!
00:01Yeah!
00:02Nice job!
00:03Nice round butterball.
00:04As the harpooning fleet tallies 25 tons of bluefin tuna...
00:05Hit him!
00:06Back it down!
00:07Back it down!
00:08That's how you do it, baby!
00:09He's fried, baby!
00:10...each captain angles for the lion's share of the remaining 59-ton quota.
00:21We definitely needed that one.
00:23We have to fight for this limited quota, so a lot of harpooners don't like each other.
00:27You guys.
00:28I love harassment.
00:29I love when they hate me.
00:32In the waters off Cape Cod, three centuries-old strategies
00:36still compete.
00:38Some bank on instinct and intuition.
00:40I'm getting excited from leftover whale legs.
00:43The tuna like to eat the same food the whales are eating.
00:46Others use science to gain the upper hand.
00:49As an undergrad, I studied the bluefin tuna ad nauseum.
00:52I got a bunch going south, right into the wind.
00:54And I am out here to outfish everyone in this fleet.
00:57And a select few rely on legacy.
01:00The old man taught me pretty much anything
01:02I know how to do on the water.
01:04But nobody relies on luck.
01:07Head up, head up, head up.
01:10Boat's right there, 12 o'clock, couple of the touch.
01:13Maybe like that.
01:14They're still there, they're deep, but they're there.
01:16Back down hard, back down hard.
01:18Go, go, go, go.
01:28Five fish today, boys, five fish.
01:30Let's get them.
01:31We're going to look our way across at like 14 knots,
01:33see if we can find pogies.
01:35A couple boats got them out of the pogies yesterday,
01:37real, real tight to the beach.
01:38That's the only way they could fish.
01:40I heard the whales were in close here.
01:41That means the pogies are right here.
01:44Going into this trip, we're behind red rum
01:46and easy does it in terms of profits.
01:48I'm personally not happy with how much we've made this season,
01:51and I'm hoping this is a profitable trip.
01:57After a hard southwest like this,
01:59generally the warmer water gets pushed to the north
02:02and to the east, so we just need to move around
02:05and find that warm water.
02:07I understand bluefin tuna on a scientific level,
02:10and that gives me the edge.
02:11As an undergrad, I studied the bluefin tuna ad nauseum.
02:14I read almost every scientific paper written right
02:17through 1992.
02:19I've always treated the bluefin tuna
02:21as a big, giant science experiment.
02:23I've been tracking water temperatures for 30 years.
02:25I've been monitoring where I catch fish,
02:28when I catch fish, moon phase.
02:30You're trying to interpret the signals the ocean gives you
02:33that the fish are present.
02:35Marking piles of pogies, stripers.
02:37We're going to just start looking now.
02:39We'll just make our way across the bay
02:41and just keep going north.
02:42There's a minke right there.
02:44What?
02:45Minke right there.
02:45Yeah, I'm not surprised.
02:47We're marking bait the whole way.
02:51Coming on the heels of his first cold spell of the season,
02:55Captain Tyler sits in third place,
02:57with four fish caught so far this season,
03:00right behind Captain Nico on the easy dozen.
03:03Meanwhile, Captain Joe Dion on the red rump
03:07has yet to lose his stride, holding
03:09a significant lead on the rest of the fleet
03:12with six fish caught.
03:16Any power cords or anything?
03:18Why, would that be a problem pulling away
03:19with a power cord plugged in?
03:21Watch your back, Mike.
03:23Don't get squished.
03:26We're in the lead, so let's go get some more tunas.
03:29Today, we're fishing close again.
03:30We're fishing inside Stellwagen, in between Marshfield
03:34and Stellwagen Bank, probably only seven or eight miles
03:37off shore.
03:39We'll be nice and close.
03:40We're not going to burn a lot of fuel.
03:42If there's anything running around inside here
03:44with Mark in the plane, we'll find him.
03:46Currently, we're in the lead.
03:49Easy dozen is in second, and Cynthia C2 is in third.
03:53Tyler has all these fancy college degrees,
03:56but we, on the red rump, use our instincts
03:59to try to find these fish and experience.
04:03Hey, Nate, 50 degrees.
04:06Really?
04:08Think about it.
04:09If you're cold, you're going to come up.
04:11Maybe they'll come up.
04:12It'll be a show day.
04:13I hope so.
04:14Right on.
04:15Get it nice and centered, Thomas.
04:17There you go.
04:19All set.
04:20All right.
04:21Get this pulver down and get the f out of here.
04:24It was a little breezy this morning,
04:26but we kind of let go.
04:27There's still a pretty good land breeze,
04:29but hopefully, once we get out, it'll be nice and flat.
04:33In this industry, some guys have a science background,
04:36like Tyler.
04:37Some guys, we're just going to let it go.
04:39We're going to let it go.
04:40We're going to let it go.
04:41We're going to let it go.
04:42We're going to let it go.
04:44Some guys work off of instinct, like Joe, Dion, and Dylan.
04:47And then there's us.
04:52Everyone in this boat was trained by my father.
04:54And this year, we're operating off
04:55a lot of his prior knowledge of the fishery
04:58and what has worked for this boat in the past.
05:00You can't really go poke around and try to find something.
05:02You have to go to where you know you've had action.
05:04So that's where we're going to head,
05:05and hopefully, we'll run across something.
05:10We want the fish bad.
05:11I can taste the fish.
05:12We want it so bad.
05:13And hopefully, today will be the day.
05:22Seven miles northeast on the Cynthia C2.
05:34Love fishing, hate waiting.
05:35Come on, fish.
05:39Nice thing about this water, too, is tuna tracks.
05:42It's not windy enough to wipe out the tuna tracks yet.
05:45Spotting bluefin tuna is an acquired art.
05:49Tuna swim in multiple formations.
05:51So you have the general migratory formation,
05:54which is usually a large blob.
05:56They're constantly changing within the school.
05:59You have the lines of fish, which are literally
06:02lined up side by side.
06:04They're hunting.
06:05They're actively looking for food.
06:07Or they're moving from one piece of bottom to the next,
06:12and they're using the warmer surface water
06:14to try to get from point A to point B.
06:16I've been doing this 40 years, and I'm still learning
06:20how to see fish even better.
06:22But my crew will tell you that I'm usually
06:24picking up the bunch a long time before they do.
06:28I hope it gets nice.
06:30I know.
06:32Me, too.
06:33I'm getting ready to take my shirt off.
06:35Please don't.
06:36I mean my jacket.
06:37Thank you for clarifying that.
06:40Come to your 1 o'clock.
06:41I got something on top here.
06:42About 20 boats there.
06:45That's my boy.
06:46Right here.
06:47Right here.
06:47Yeah, I got him.
06:48They're right on top at 12, 15 there.
06:50Tell you about three boats going away.
06:53Touch of power, guys.
06:54Close the distance up.
06:55Close the distance right up.
06:56You're right on his tail.
06:58I got color from here.
06:59OK, good.
07:01In general, I'm a very competitive person,
07:03especially when it comes to tuna fishing.
07:05And I am out here to outfish everyone in this fleet.
07:08Sacking out, I think.
07:10You got him or no?
07:10No.
07:11They're down deep right now at quarter of 12
07:14at a boat and a half going away.
07:16I want you to go over.
07:17Oh, yeah, I got him.
07:17I got him.
07:18OK, power.
07:18Yep, you got him.
07:19Go, go, go, go.
07:20OK, looks like quarter of 12 there.
07:23Going away from you at about a boat and a half.
07:26Slow it down a little bit.
07:28Here you go.
07:29Come to 12.30 now.
07:32Don't have color.
07:34I don't have color, Cap.
07:36Thought I had him.
07:36Just wait.
07:38They're down real deep.
07:39I don't see them right now.
07:41They'd be a quarter of a boat straight down deep.
07:43I don't see them.
07:44If the tuna settle before I get a shot, 50% of the time
07:48or more, they'll come back up.
07:49It's not really that they're scared
07:51and they're running away from the boat.
07:52A lot of times, it's just a direction change.
07:54When they come up, instead of going east,
07:55they might be going southeast or going due south.
07:58So you wait till they come back up,
08:00get established on the surface, and then you
08:02go back to your attack pattern.
08:04Wait for these to come back up.
08:05They'll come back up.
08:0812 o'clock to you, boat and a half, right on top.
08:11Yeah, I got him.
08:11I got him.
08:12Go, go, go, go, go.
08:13Go ahead, go ahead, go ahead, go ahead, go ahead.
08:14All right, you got to give me some power now.
08:16Power, power, power.
08:18Come on.
08:19You ain't going to stay up there forever.
08:22Oh, come on.
08:2312 o'clock there, about a half a boat.
08:26Hit him.
08:28Back it down.
08:29Back it down.
08:30That's a beast.
08:31That's a beast.
08:33You son of a bitch.
08:34Nice shot.
08:35Keep backing down.
08:36Keep backing down.
08:37Back down hard.
08:38Back down hard.
08:39Go, go, go, go.
08:40Fish is going.
08:41I hope we didn't cut him off.
08:42Go, go, go, go, go.
08:43Keep going.
08:44Keep going.
08:45Oh, easy.
08:46Slow down, slow down, slow down, slow down, slow down, slow down.
08:48Slow down, slow down, slow down.
08:50Nice job, John.
08:51He went right under the boat.
08:52Nice job, John.
08:54Nice job, John.
08:55He went right under the boat.
08:57Freaking monster.
08:58He's up front now.
09:00OK.
09:01Put him off the starboard side, John.
09:02Just put him off the starboard side, buddy.
09:04Nice job, John.
09:05That was awesome.
09:07Absolutely awesome.
09:08That was a hell of a job.
09:09The biggest concern is when the fish goes under the boat
09:11after you harpoon them, because he might get drawn
09:14into the wheel, and you'll pull dark.
09:16Back it down.
09:17Back it down.
09:18So it's important that the guy on the helm
09:20gets that boat in reverse, pushing the water
09:22underneath the boat towards the fish,
09:24keeping the line away from the wheel.
09:26Nice job, Sean.
09:27That was awesome.
09:29Let's see if he's the biggest one we got.
09:32He's by far the biggest fish we got.
09:34All right, tail rope.
09:35Tail rope.
09:36Tail rope.
09:37Ready?
09:38He's going to be too long.
09:39He doesn't leave enough room.
09:40He's going to be too big.
09:41Get him in.
09:42Get that tail rope off him.
09:43Untie it there.
09:44Pull it to the door.
09:45Yes, sir.
09:46I got to go.
09:47He's very big.
09:49One-oh-two.
09:50One-oh-two.
09:51One-oh-two.
09:52Can I call it, or can I call it?
09:54We got our biggest fish so far of the season on deck,
09:57which is great, but we're still one behind Joe.
09:59So red rum, we're not done yet.
10:01Let's get another one.
10:02All right.
10:03Let's go get number two.
10:04Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha.
10:11What's Maki saying?
10:13He's been working to the south, I mean the north,
10:16couldn't see s***.
10:18Now he's going out on the northwest corner,
10:20so anything exciting to report?
10:23S*** no.
10:24Ha, ha, ha.
10:26Here comes the sun.
10:27Come on.
10:28My eyes just opened up a little bit.
10:31There's no question we've been having a good season so far,
10:34catching consistently.
10:36But all it takes is one day for someone like Tyler
10:40to get on a roll, and that lead is gone.
10:44And that goes for any other boat.
10:45If any boat's catching fish, why aren't we there,
10:48and why aren't we catching those fish?
10:51I smell them.
10:52This is where you get multiples, usually.
10:54But it happens, like, you know, it happens in there.
11:01Whale right there.
11:03There's one up here, too.
11:05Oh, yeah, there's a humpback.
11:07See a big tail?
11:08They call them humpbacks because they arch their backs
11:11and they open their mouths and feed.
11:13It has nothing to do with their actual back.
11:15It's the way they shape themselves
11:17and arch themselves when they're feeding.
11:19That's how they get that name, humpback.
11:21Tuna like to eat the same food the whales are eating.
11:24Sometimes the whales will kill some food,
11:26and it'll just go floating down,
11:28and the tuna fish will just be there scooping it all up.
11:31It's all right there for them, easy pickets.
11:33He gets excited from leftover whale wake.
11:36See it?
11:39I see some!
11:41You see some?
11:43You got some off to your right, 2 o'clock or so.
11:47Tuna, tuna!
11:5025 boats or so here going into the sea.
11:56Wait, it's right there, I can still see it.
11:59In about, oh, 10 boats or so, maybe.
12:04Right there, that funny water, right there.
12:06Stay to that right side.
12:08Come right, just a touch now.
12:11Steady like that, steady like that.
12:13Going away from you, I'm in the clear.
12:23Steady like that, steady like that.
12:25Going away from you, I'm in the clear.
12:28Steady like that, steady like that.
12:30Steady like that, steady like that.
12:32Going away from you, I'm in the clear.
12:39Too small.
12:41Short?
12:43Too small?
12:45Yeah.
12:47They looked like 65, they weren't even close.
12:49All too small, Maki.
12:52Damn it.
12:54That's a little one.
12:57We took a look at them, they weren't good enough.
13:00According to federal fishing regulations,
13:03a fish has to be 73 inches to harvest.
13:06We're in an area where there's some small fish,
13:08but there's some big ones in here,
13:10and Mark has real good judgment,
13:12so we just got to pick through them
13:14and try to find the keepers.
13:16Come on, Maki, find me a keeper!
13:2013 miles east, on the Easy Does It.
13:26Riding out in the bay,
13:28this is where my dad taught me to do what we do.
13:31You hear what they're seeing out here?
13:33I mean, I know it's big fish, but, you know,
13:35any bunches, size, you know, numbers, not really.
13:39We've been lucky that our fish have been slobs this season,
13:42but we've only caught two fish
13:44compared to Joe's six and Tyler's four.
13:46We're staying local today on the inside of the bay,
13:48and this is where Billy made his legacy and his career,
13:51right here close to home, not burning much fuel,
13:54and coming in with slobs.
13:56I mean, that's one thing your dad had.
13:58He was just, like, gathering information all night, all day.
14:01Oh, he f----- me.
14:02He has the phone, never left his f----- ear.
14:04But, I mean, he would get...
14:06The Gloucester Report, the f----- Maine Report, yeah.
14:09Everything I do is in service to my father's legacy.
14:12He's the reason why staying competitive is so important.
14:15All right, so the real question is, what's our f----- move now?
14:18Nope.
14:19That's fine.
14:23Oh, we got a minke behind us.
14:25Roger, roger.
14:32You got something?
14:34Just the boat.
14:36What's this in front of us, Kev?
14:38See this going left to right?
14:42See it?
14:45You mean way out there?
14:46Yeah.
14:47Okay, yeah.
14:48I don't know if it's awake or whatever, I just...
14:50Yeah.
14:56Kev, I think that's fish.
14:58All right.
15:00We're already on fish.
15:01It's probably gonna be a great day.
15:03Let's go take a look.
15:05Yeah, f-----.
15:06Want me to slow down?
15:07Yeah.
15:10Kind of all over the place, Nick.
15:14Looks like they might be going off to the left.
15:17Want me to just turn right in on them?
15:19Yeah.
15:21Get ready, Nick.
15:23I'll be ready.
15:24I got them right here.
15:26You got the fish?
15:27Yep.
15:28All right, hang on.
15:29Give me f----- five seconds.
15:30Get up on them.
15:32Okay.
15:40Those are fish, Kev.
15:41Yeah.
15:42That's fish.
15:43They're coming up.
15:44Just a touch more speed, Kev.
15:46A little bit.
15:48Here we go.
15:49Here we go.
15:50They're going off to the...
15:52They're all over the place.
15:54Right there.
15:55Yep.
15:56They're still there.
15:57They're going off to the left.
15:59Follow my stick right there.
16:02To the right, to the right, to the right.
16:05Keep coming.
16:06Keep coming.
16:07They're there.
16:08They're still there.
16:09They're deep, but they're there.
16:10Follow my pole now.
16:12Right there, right there, Kev.
16:13Right there.
16:14To the left, to the left.
16:17Come on.
16:18Come on.
16:20Hit him.
16:21Hit him.
16:23We got him.
16:24We got him.
16:25We got him.
16:26Back him again.
16:27Back it down.
16:28Back it down.
16:29Back it down.
16:30Hit him again.
16:31Hit him again.
16:32Hit them.
16:33All right.
16:34We got him.
16:35He's toast.
16:36We f----- got him.
16:37We got him.
16:38Maybe.
16:41Still kicking or what?
16:42Nope.
16:43Just his head.
16:44Right through my legs.
16:45Yep.
16:46OK.
16:47Watch, watch, watch.
16:48One, two, three, go.
16:49Go.
16:50All right.
16:53You don't need no f----- plane.
16:55Let's get a measure on him, Thomas.
16:56What do we got?
16:57Cap, we got f----- 91 inches.
17:0091.
17:01You heard him.
17:04Thanks, Billy.
17:07Back to work.
17:08All right, let's get four more.
17:09Let's do it.
17:1650 miles to the north, Captain Bill Mooney's on the fish
17:20isle targets Ipswich Bay.
17:31I wonder what all the superstars are doing today.
17:34Tyler, Captain Dilligan, Mr. Joey Deon,
17:38and the WWF Walter League, Nick Shavralis.
17:43You know they're all scared to s----.
17:45Nobody has as much fun as me doing this.
17:47Nope.
17:49So the other guys had a big jump start on me.
17:51I'm not worried about it.
17:53I'm one of the best.
17:54I'm going to catch up.
17:55We are catching up.
17:56And I feel great about this season.
17:58Me and my nephew are just going to kick some ass.
18:01I better be quiet.
18:03Keep talking.
18:04I might not catch nothing.
18:06I've been doing this for years.
18:08I don't think anyone can compete with my percentage of throwing.
18:11My strategy comes from working with these fish a lot,
18:15knowing their movements, knowing their patterns,
18:17just the sense in my heart where to go with these fish
18:20will be that day.
18:21Hopefully.
18:23We just need to catch one, then we'll really talk.
18:29Something's f----- up.
18:31Rock, maybe?
18:334 or 5?
18:34I don't know.
18:354 or 5.
18:38Looks like we're in the aquarium.
18:45Got it right up in here.
18:47You got him going?
18:48Yeah, somewhere right up in here.
18:50Oh, I got it right there, 4 inches to the left.
18:53There we go.
18:55Good boy.
18:57All right, let's line this thing up right.
19:00Get ready to slow it down when I tie it and get the kill, Steve.
19:04Here we go.
19:05Here we go.
19:06Hopefully you don't f----- it up this time.
19:09Cinderella's going.
19:10Slow it down, son.
19:11Slow it down.
19:13Slow it down.
19:16Go to that left one over here, the left one.
19:22Get over.
19:23Get over.
19:24Get over.
19:25Slow it down.
19:26Slow it down, Steve.
19:29Turn to the right.
19:30Over.
19:32Right here.
19:34Right here.
19:37Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.
19:43Right here.
19:44Slow it down.
19:47Keep pulling it back.
19:50Head up, head up.
19:51Back it up.
19:52Back it up.
19:53Pull it back.
19:54Pull it back.
19:56All right, easy, easy.
19:57Good.
19:58Come ahead, come ahead.
19:59Come ahead.
20:00Touch it in gear, just in gear.
20:03Just go ahead on him.
20:04Hit him again.
20:05Hit him, hit him, hit him.
20:07Hit him on the butt.
20:08Yep.
20:09Hit him.
20:10Yep.
20:11All right.
20:12You good?
20:13Yeah, he's good.
20:14Okay, I'm coming.
20:15These hempies are fast.
20:17Hurry up.
20:18Yeah, hold on.
20:20That's who we're looking for, right?
20:23Cinderella going the prom.
20:25All right, down, down, down, down.
20:27Down, down, down, down.
20:29Fast as you can, let it go.
20:32Heavy little bastard.
20:34I'm so happy.
20:36We might have been late to the party,
20:38but we kicked the door down on the way in.
20:41That fish is gonna get us a huge payday, I can tell.
20:45I'm gonna get a measurement right on him right now.
20:50108 inches.
20:52Wow, that's a big sea monster.
20:54Kid's got it now, now, man.
20:56He's got everything in order.
20:57Whoo!
20:58The whale's still going, the sun's still low.
21:01We couldn't ask for a better day today.
21:06See if I can find another punch.
21:20My mother just had a checkup.
21:23So what's a CEA marker?
21:25It basically indicates if there's any activity,
21:31cancerous activity.
21:33She got, like, the chills, like, two weeks ago,
21:36like, bad chills a couple times.
21:38So she went for a checkup, and she just got the result.
21:41Who's this, your wife?
21:42Mother.
21:43Oh, your mother.
21:44Yeah, she had surgery in April.
21:46Well, I hope they got it all.
21:48Yeah.
21:49Mine, they told me that if it doesn't come back
21:51in the first two years, you're probably good.
21:53But it's been five years.
21:54Yeah.
21:55He said, you're real good.
21:58I was diagnosed with colorectal cancer in 2019.
22:01My approach to my treatment was how I treat fishing.
22:04You know, you have to go for it and keep pushing
22:08and put yourself to the edge.
22:10Despite having some pretty significant amount
22:12of surgery done, the day after I was cleared
22:15to go fishing again, I killed my first fish with a harpoon.
22:19I was completely wrapped up, tight as possible
22:21to keep from doing any damage.
22:23But I was back fishing and was still taking my chemotherapy
22:27while I was fishing.
22:29It was a hard battle, but a battle that, up to this point,
22:33I have won.
22:34So where I want to be is on the ocean.
22:37Now that we got the wind, though, if we can find one up,
22:40my confidence level has gone way up.
22:4410 miles northeast on the easy does it.
22:53All right.
22:54Well, now that we're re-rigged, we're ready to go.
22:56I feel good.
22:57I'm just thankful to be producing,
22:58and I'm thankful to have my team working together.
23:01And we're all doing our job, and that's what it takes
23:03to be successful in this fishery.
23:04So I'd like to be able to put another two or three fish
23:07in this boat and have a slammer of a day.
23:10Let's get the job done, and let's keep on going.
23:16You see this boat behind us coming in?
23:20Oh, I think that's rum, rum jam.
23:27We're going out to Nikko.
23:33Yo!
23:34What's the word?
23:35Good going.
23:36Can't let you have all the fun, man.
23:38Try to play catch up to you and the scientists, you know?
23:42No, it's good.
23:43I haven't had a chance yet.
23:45How far east did you go?
23:46I was up at, like, 650, 200.
23:49Really?
23:50Yep.
23:51All right, brother.
23:52Well, good luck.
23:53All right, guys.
23:54Go get them.
23:55Let's get some more.
23:56Joe's been on a roll all season.
23:58It's surprising to see him in a lull,
24:00but we'll definitely try to seize the opportunity
24:02to get ahead.
24:05What is that?
24:06Right there.
24:09See it?
24:1012 o'clock.
24:11Oh, way out there?
24:12Yeah.
24:13Yeah.
24:23Oh, boy.
24:24Here we go.
24:25This is all left over here?
24:27I think it's, like, right up in there.
24:29You see it?
24:30Yeah.
24:32There they go.
24:33There they are.
24:4411 o'clock.
24:46Still got them, Kev?
24:47Yep.
24:51Bug came out.
24:52Thomas!
24:53Yo!
24:54Thomas!
24:55Thomas!
24:56Thomas!
24:57Thomas!
24:58Thomas!
24:59Thomas!
25:00Yo!
25:01Get me some black tape!
25:04Not seeing it now.
25:05What's that?
25:06Not seeing it now.
25:08Are you okay?
25:09You heard him.
25:16I got them right here.
25:1811 o'clock.
25:19How far are they?
25:20About five boats.
25:24Oh, there they are.
25:25Okay.
25:26There they are.
25:27All right.
25:29I think they're going this way, Kev.
25:31They're going the left side of them.
25:49Still got them, Kev?
25:50Yep.
25:51I got them right here.
25:56They're going this way.
25:59Hit them!
26:00Hit them!
26:01Hit them!
26:02Hit them!
26:03That's right!
26:04Back it up!
26:05Back it up!
26:06Baby!
26:07Woo-hoo!
26:08Back it down!
26:09Back it down!
26:10Come grab them, Thomas.
26:11Come grab them.
26:12There you go.
26:13Walk them back.
26:14Yep.
26:15Nice and easy now.
26:16Yep.
26:17All right.
26:18Start pulling them up, Thomas.
26:19Yep.
26:20Here he comes, Kev.
26:21He's a big one.
26:22Let's go, baby!
26:23All right.
26:24All right.
26:25All right.
26:26All right.
26:27Let's go, baby!
26:28All right.
26:29One, two, three.
26:30Go!
26:31Woo-hoo!
26:32Oh, no.
26:33All right.
26:34Is he in?
26:35Yep.
26:36Give me a knife.
26:37Yep.
26:38We picked up another bunch, went on them.
26:40They started milling in a circle.
26:42It was a tough shot because we were coming up on them from the side.
26:45But luckily enough, Kev was able to swing me over him,
26:48gave me the best possible chance that I could,
26:50and I was able to heave it out and reconnect.
26:52So we got two.
26:55We doubled our fish count in one trip,
26:57but it's a tight race to the top,
26:59and we've got no plan to slow down.
27:01Give me the smart end.
27:02You heard him.
27:05You on, Thomas?
27:06Oh, yeah.
27:07108 inches.
27:09Good job, Kev.
27:11You've been slaying them quick.
27:1710 miles southwest on the Cynthia C2.
27:22I like it, I like it, I like it a lot.
27:25Get that underside of the tail cut, get the water running.
27:28That fish won't fit in the slush tank, obviously.
27:30So we got a fish on board,
27:32but the name of the game at this time of the season is multiple fish trips.
27:36We need to come home with a load.
27:38It looks like that southwest is starting to build down the southwest corner of the bay.
27:41The fish tend to show just before the wind comes too much for us to fish.
27:46The last hour of fishing before a southwest wind might come up,
27:50a lot of times those fish will be on the surface.
27:53I don't know why. It's just a behavior of theirs.
27:55I see it a lot, especially on the southwest.
27:58On other wind directions, I don't see it near as much.
28:01What say you, Dougie?
28:03I thought I had a bunch here, made a couple turns, but can't find them, you know?
28:09Yeah, I gotcha.
28:1125 miles north on the Red Rum.
28:15The more I fly around out here,
28:17the more I think it would have been a good day to just stay home and play house.
28:21Oh, he's grumpy.
28:23He's so mad right now.
28:25He's foul.
28:27I mean, the weather's right.
28:29It's just the wind isn't as bad.
28:31I mean, it could obviously be sunnier.
28:33If we keep going like this, we're going to melt Nate's credit card.
28:38That's stupid.
28:39Ain't no sense to it.
28:41All right, let's go.
28:44Tyler and Nico have both caught fish today.
28:47Definitely feeling the pressure.
28:49We've got to get a fish, because they're closing the gap.
28:52Well, we're heading towards a tide change right now.
28:55And we need the fish.
28:57The fish make the day.
28:59Because I was looking at that spot right there.
29:02Sometimes you don't see it until you see it.
29:06I see something.
29:09Okay.
29:10How far?
29:13643, 267.
29:17Back up here seven miles.
29:22You need to stop praying a little bit.
29:25Oh, there's fish in here, baby.
29:27I like it.
29:31I got something right over here.
29:33What do I got?
29:37I got a bunch.
29:38I got fish! Shut down the pump!
29:40Yes, sir.
29:41Yeah, Dougie, I got a bunch here.
29:42Shut down the pump!
29:43Coming your way.
29:47Yeah, they're running due south.
29:48Running beautifully right now.
29:50Yeah, I see you running there.
29:51I'll be right there.
29:52You got them, Sean?
29:531130?
29:54Yep.
29:56Yep, going south, right into the wind.
29:58Oh, they're there.
29:59They're popping again.
30:00They're popping again.
30:01They're up there again.
30:02See them?
30:03Yep.
30:041130?
30:05Yep.
30:06All right, we're going for them.
30:07Battle stations, boys.
30:08Get a little bunch here.
30:091230.
30:10See it?
30:11They look good there for a minute.
30:12It was on the right side of the wave,
30:14and it just really showed itself.
30:17Got to come right.
30:18You're 1 o'clock.
30:2020 boats, maybe.
30:22A little less.
30:23Here comes the sun.
30:24Does he have them?
30:27All right, take a turn.
30:28They're going quick.
30:29Pop.
30:30A little power, Cap.
30:31A little power.
30:32Touch the power.
30:33There you go.
30:34Good, good, good, good, good.
30:35They're looking really good.
30:36Slide right in behind them, Sean.
30:37No mistaking those fish.
30:39They start your turn right at them.
30:41You're far enough back, you won't screw them up.
30:43Gotcha.
30:44I don't have a look right now.
30:46I got them.
30:471130.
30:48They're swimming from your left to your right right now.
30:52Turn here a little bit to face it,
30:54and I'll pull that course steady.
30:57All right, go ahead and turn on them, Mike.
31:00Come to your left a little bit.
31:01Come to your left a little.
31:03That's it.
31:04And just start slowly backing it off.
31:08A little slow.
31:09Get away from me now there.
31:10Half the boat length.
31:11Right in touch with the boat right there.
31:1312 o'clock.
31:14Come left a touch.
31:16Broadside.
31:17Damn it.
31:18Mike, I was trying to get you to come around them.
31:24I tried to.
31:25Watch me.
31:26The boat won't go that fast.
31:28I did.
31:29I started turning that way.
31:30Come right, come right.
31:31I'm looking right.
31:32I know the fish.
31:33We're all looking at the fish.
31:34And you took them broadside.
31:35I'm just saying.
31:37I can't do it.
31:38Come right and come around the back of them.
31:40It's the best chance I'm going to get.
31:42They're always looking bigger sideways,
31:44don't they, Mike?
31:45Instead of coming away,
31:46so the fish is coming up on the fish,
31:49they turn.
31:50Instead of coming away and back into them,
31:52we went right into them sideways.
31:54It sucks.
31:55I was trying to get him to come off and back in,
31:57but he wouldn't do it.
31:58We went right into them sideways.
32:00They go in the wrong way anyways, on the left wing.
32:03Not a good chance.
32:06Just the way it's going.
32:09Not well.
32:10Sucks.
32:11We just need some luck here.
32:13We need our luck to change.
32:15I got the water.
32:17Bring your power back.
32:18Lower down.
32:20I don't have him.
32:21Slow right down.
32:22Slow right down.
32:23I don't have the fish.
32:24He's down.
32:25Slow right down.
32:26Yeah, I think he's making water right there.
32:29That could be him right here.
32:31I don't know, though.
32:33He was going this way.
32:34I don't have him.
32:35I'd slow it right down.
32:36Take a little turn this way.
32:37This is where he was.
32:38Go this way.
32:39Go this way.
32:40Go that way.
32:41How far up were they?
32:43They should be at 1145 to 10,
32:48and they were right where we were.
32:50You don't see them now, right?
32:52No, they sagged.
32:54I don't see them.
32:56No.
33:01I got water.
33:02I got them over here.
33:039 o'clock.
33:04I got them over here at 9 o'clock.
33:06Go, go, go, go, go, go.
33:07That's them.
33:08That's them?
33:09Yep.
33:10Perfect.
33:11Nice job, Todd.
33:13I got an attaboy.
33:14You get the star.
33:15A few and five between.
33:16Two?
33:17I got color.
33:18Two of them.
33:19The right one's further back, it looks like.
33:20The left one's higher.
33:21The right one's up good.
33:22You see the right one?
33:23Yeah, yeah.
33:24That's the left.
33:25That's the right.
33:26Okay.
33:27Yep, right at him.
33:28A little bit more to the right.
33:30He's going to the right the whole time.
33:31He's going to the right.
33:32Right there.
33:33So we're on our way to a farm that I have one beehive, now
33:38two.
33:39I started growing an organic garden about 15 years ago in my
33:43yard.
33:44Here we are.
33:45I almost died twice from bee stings.
33:46I was deathly allergic to bees.
33:48So my goal is to grow 100 large beehives.
33:50There we go.
33:52We're going to work it out.
33:53We're going to work it out.
33:54We're going to work it out.
33:57I died twice from bee stings.
33:58I was deathly allergic to bees.
33:59I went through a 10-year program of taking low-dose shots
34:03so I could build a tolerance up to the bees.
34:05I have gone into the hive with less protection,
34:07but I ended up getting stung that time,
34:09I think, if I remember.
34:11I mean, look at all the bees.
34:12I mean, I can literally take my hand and just scoop bees.
34:14These are Carnolian bees.
34:16They've just done unbelievable here this year.
34:18The bees' populations are being seriously threatened.
34:21By adding bees to my environment,
34:24I'm also improving the environment
34:25of the people that are around me.
34:26The big problem right now is people are afraid of bees.
34:29Bees are pretty docile, as long as you don't upset them.
34:33They're not real happy with me right now.
34:35Are there any bees on me right now?
34:36I don't see any.
34:37Yeah.
34:37That's a lot of honey in there already.
34:39I love beekeeping.
34:40I just like being with the bees.
34:47It's the left.
34:47That's the right.
34:48OK.
34:49Yep, right at him.
34:50A little bit more to the right.
34:51A little bit more to the right.
34:52He's going to the right the whole time.
34:53He's going to the right.
34:54Right there.
34:57Hit him!
34:58Hit him!
34:59Back it down! Back it down!
35:00Back it down, Cap!
35:01Back it down!
35:02Nice shot, Cap!
35:03Back it down!
35:03Back it down!
35:04The left one was bigger, but we'll take that one.
35:06There you go. Keep it back and down.
35:07All right, Sean.
35:08Put him off our starboard side.
35:09Just a little touch.
35:10Just a little touch of starboard.
35:12I got deep cover.
35:14He's coming up.
35:14There he is.
35:16Tail rope.
35:17Tail rope.
35:17Sorry.
35:18Ah!
35:19There you go.
35:20Ready?
35:21Ready?
35:22One, two.
35:24The way we do it.
35:25Well done, boys.
35:26All right, clear that tail rope.
35:27Clear my lines.
35:29Nice.
35:29Nice.
35:30Nice job, Cap.
35:30Yeah.
35:31This is 100 even, maybe.
35:3499.
35:3599.
35:37Excellent day.
35:39That was perfect.
35:50The boat will actually lay right in with this wind.
35:53Nice day, yeah.
35:54Definitely beats coming home with nothing.
35:56Unwrap.
35:57Ready?
35:58So two fish today.
35:59I mean, we're allowed five.
36:01To get those two opportunities in to capitalize, that's big.
36:04What's up, Pama?
36:05Oh, my.
36:06These fish, they had some pretty good shape.
36:08You know, they're bigger fish.
36:09Take a little bit longer to fatten up.
36:10But what you might lack a little bit in quality,
36:13you pick, you definitely make up for in size.
36:16Now let's see what they look like.
36:17All right, Tyler.
36:19You see here, it's not much fat, but really nice shape.
36:22Your fish looks really good.
36:24It's $14 a pound.
36:26Nice.
36:26All right?
36:27Yes, sir.
36:28For this one here, this one a little skinny,
36:30a little bit dark in the middle.
36:33But that one's worth $13 a pound.
36:35Nice.
36:36All right, you want to plop the tails off
36:37and get a final weight?
36:38Yep.
36:39Let's steal a couple of finlets for genetics.
36:42I'm executive board member of the Bluefin Collaborative,
36:45and we are doing an extensive genetic study on bluefin.
36:48And we're using this to do close kin evaluation
36:51of Eastern and Western species.
36:57What do you got for a weight there, Sergio?
36:59What did it say?
36:59137.
37:01Really good job, buddy.
37:02Keep going.
37:03Keep me busy.
37:06So what did you get, Sergio, on the weight?
37:07I have a 438.
37:08All right, cool.
37:09Dressed, right?
37:10All right.
37:10Good job.
37:11Appreciate your business.
37:12Yeah.
37:13Good job.
37:14Yes.
37:14Nice.
37:15Right now, we're doing fine.
37:16You know, I really don't look at it as a battle.
37:18We just go out and do what we can do every day.
37:20All right, Todd, we get to go home now.
37:23Get some sleep, go out tomorrow morning,
37:24try to do it again.
37:38That should be good, Thomas.
37:39You heard him.
37:41Today was a great day.
37:42You know, we got two fish today, which puts
37:44us in striking distance.
37:45OK.
37:46Oh, yeah.
37:47After a really slow start, you know,
37:49I feel like everybody was kind of sleeping on us.
37:51And we're able to turn it around.
37:53We're able to gel as a crew.
37:54And we're firing on all cylinders.
37:56OK.
38:02What's up, Sergio?
38:03How you doing, buddy?
38:04Better see how your fish looks like.
38:11All right, Sergio, how much we got on this one?
38:14307 dressed.
38:15307 dressed.
38:16Roger, roger.
38:17You heard him.
38:18Right here.
38:20All right, Sergio, what was the dress weight on the second fish?
38:22On the second fish, 333 dressed.
38:24333.
38:25Yeah, good job, buddy.
38:27All right, let me tell you how the fish looks like, all right?
38:29Roger, roger.
38:30Let's take a look, Sergio.
38:32You know, at this point in the season,
38:33I'm hoping that Sergio is able to see what I see,
38:36a good high fat content, oil, good color,
38:39because it's multiple fish days.
38:41These are the days that we really do some damage
38:42and rack up some serious money.
38:45See, you can see some fat on the skin.
38:47Yeah.
38:49$13 a pound.
38:49$13 a pound?
38:51All right, let me take a look in the second one, all right?
38:53Sounds good.
38:54All right, Sergio, what are we looking at in this tail cut
38:56here?
38:56All right, Nick, I got to tell you,
38:57this fish is, I know, skinny and long.
39:00Right.
39:01There's not much fat yet, but it's some oil.
39:05OK.
39:06It's got to show up.
39:07And there's some fatty on the skin.
39:08Right.
39:09We're going to get $12.
39:10$12?
39:11All right, Sergio, I'll take it, man.
39:14How'd we do, Cap?
39:16All right, so the first fish was $3.07,
39:20and we got $13 a pound for it.
39:22So that's just under $4,000.
39:24Second fish dressed out at $3.33.
39:27We got $12 a pound for it, which is also just under $4,000.
39:30So almost an $8,000 day.
39:32You guys should be proud of yourselves.
39:34I know I'm proud of you guys, but we'll take a paycheck
39:36for the day for sure, all right?
39:38Sounds good, Cap.
39:39I think Billy sent us that fish, and I
39:41think we've proven that we can continue on his legacy.
39:44And we're not done yet.
39:52The season's starting out wonderful.
39:55Who's better than Captain Hollywood?
39:56Just tell me.
39:57I don't know.
39:58I haven't seen it yet.
40:00Get this thing in a box and send it.
40:02I'm hoping this thing's choked with fat.
40:07Great shape on this fish, Billy.
40:09It's not about the size.
40:10It's about the shape, ain't it?
40:12We're just hoping it's got some fat on it.
40:13We're hoping for a good price.
40:15Somewhere in the $15 range, we'll really be happy.
40:20Not great.
40:20Not great.
40:21A lot of red meat there.
40:22Yeah, I know.
40:23I'm not impressed.
40:26So much for sending that one tonight.
40:28It's got a weight on him.
40:33What do we got?
40:34More than I thought.
40:35$290?
40:35No, $310.
40:36$310, beautiful.
40:38Nice fish.
40:39Billy, you know what?
40:40On second glance, this fish looks all right.
40:43Got a little bit of fat in the minors and the majors here.
40:46Decent color.
40:47I'd say right around, surprisingly,
40:49we'll give you about $12 a pound on this one.
40:51Ah, $12?
40:53You gotta be kidding me.
40:54No, you're not.
40:55Oh, that's nice.
40:56Great job.
40:57Get a little fuel money for tomorrow.
40:58That's right.
41:01Ready to get out of this place?
41:02Yep, hopefully we'll be back here tomorrow night.
41:05We'll be back.
41:07Frequent flies, you know you.
41:08Ah!
41:10We're rolling.
41:11We got another day tomorrow.
41:12I'm gonna go get them again.
41:13Have a late night in paradise.
41:17Backed by his scientific method, Captain Tyler on the Cynthia C2
41:21takes back the lead for the first time
41:23since day one of the season, while Captain
41:26Nico on the Easy Dozen and his two-fish haul
41:29doubles the boat's fish caught this season,
41:33leaving the top three boats neck and neck at the midway
41:36point of the season.
