00:00Okay, so do I really have to say who I'm standing here with?
00:03Cher, baby.
00:04Cher, baby.
00:05If I could turn back time, I would be her backup singer.
00:08How about that?
00:09And with her handsome boyfriend.
00:12Yeah, yeah, I'm gonna be like this when I grow up.
00:14Alexander Edwards.
00:16How do you feel tonight?
00:17How do you feel being who you are?
00:20What did you feel like when you walked out on the stage
00:22and everybody's head exploded?
00:24You know, I was so, I meant to myself like as a,
00:28like as, I'm a conduit.
00:32And so I only see the people as one thing, you know?
00:37And I know that that's who I'm supposed to be.
00:40You are incredibly awesome.
00:43Like, do you know how good you are?
00:45That's one question I want to ask.
00:47If I ever met you, I was going to be like,
00:49do you know who you are?
00:51Do you know what you do to everyone?
00:56No.
00:58Don't get shy, homie, don't get shy.
01:00How did it feel being the musical guest here
01:02when you were asked?
01:04How did that feel?
01:05Well, it was great, but I wasn't,
01:07I got, it was like, oh, I don't know, should I,
01:11you know, because I'm old.
01:12So I was singing.
01:13Girl, you're not, you don't even try it with me.
01:18Okay.
01:19You are a star that has fell from the sky
01:21and been graced by your presence.
01:24I think you are the most beautiful,
01:26wonderful person in the world.
01:27Thank you for even coming and saying hello to me.
01:30And very nice to meet you, Alexander.
01:32You are hot as hell.
01:33And I just want to let you know who you,
01:35you're dating the icon!
01:36Yeah, yeah, yeah, lucky man.
01:38Thank you so much.
01:38Thank you, baby.
01:39I'm very excited to be joined now by the hilarious
01:42Aidy Bryant.
01:43Aidy, hello, good to see you.
01:45This is a big old family reunion
01:47under this tent right now.
01:48What is it like to be here with old friends,
01:50but also people you looked up to growing up?
01:53I mean, it's extremely overwhelming,
01:55almost like a nightmare in that way.
01:58But no, it's really special.
02:00I kind of can't believe I'm a part of this.
02:03And also it was so formative to like me becoming an adult,
02:07like I kind of grew up here.
02:08So yeah, it feels nice to return as like
02:12a fully formed adorable.
02:14Yes, you are.
02:15You are a huge part of this show for sure.
02:18I'm curious because I have many favorites of yours.
02:21What do you hear the most about in terms of your characters
02:24and your sketches?
02:25Like what do people come up with?
02:26She said, I love.
02:28People always are shouting out to me,
02:30like little baby Aidy.
02:32Even though I'm like in my late thirties,
02:36I'm always hearing little baby Aidy.
02:40It's your cross to bear.
02:41You do something hilarious.
02:43It's going to live with you forever.
02:44Sticks with me.
02:45Aidy, have a great time tonight.
02:47So happy to see you.
02:48Enjoy it.
02:49How lucky are we to be joined by one of the original cast
02:51members of SNL 50 years ago, Lorraine Newman.
02:55Lorraine, it's so good to have you here.
02:57So good to see you.
02:58Can I ask you to share with us what it was like
03:01that first night, October of 1975,
03:04to launch this thing that has lasted 50 years?
03:08I think a lot of people were nervous
03:10because they were taking into account
03:12what they imagined would be the amount of people
03:14watching in the country,
03:16which we didn't think would be a lot.
03:18But I was like, guys,
03:20because I had a little experience working on TV before.
03:24And I said, you're just going to be aware
03:27of the 300 people here.
03:28That's it.
03:30And turned out to be something a little bit more than that.
03:32It was a stage show, but that was it.
03:34Are you able to appreciate, Lorraine,
03:36the impact you and that first cast
03:38with all the superstars and the comedy hall of famers
03:42that came out of it had on all these generations,
03:45not just of cast members,
03:46but of Americans who watched after?
03:48You know, being here the last several days
03:51and being able to talk to subsequent cast members,
03:55these young people,
03:58you know, I'm talking about, hey, you know,
04:00I saw that and now I know there's a place for me.
04:04That was very meaningful to me.
04:06The tone of the show opened the door
04:08for people who are a little different.
04:10Yes.
04:11Well, you were a critically important piece
04:14of that first season that got this whole thing rolling.
04:17It's so good to see you and have fun tonight, Lorraine.
04:20I'm joined now by Brandi Carlile,
04:22one of the most beautiful and powerful voices on the planet.
04:25She has been a musical guest on SNL a couple of times.
04:28For all the things you've done in your career, Brandi,
04:31what is the experience of doing a couple of songs
04:34on Saturday Night Live?
04:35Well, Saturday Night Live for me is foundational.
04:38I have loved that show since I was such a little girl.
04:40Like, I love comedy to the depths of my soul.
04:43So getting to be a part of that evening is just iconic
04:46and it's just something I wish on everybody.
04:49They had this big concert Friday night
04:51that we've been talking about a little bit.
04:52You played one of your beautiful, incredible ballads,
04:56The Joke.
04:57What was that night like with all those artists in one room?
05:01Well, it was really powerful
05:02because everybody knew how important it was.
05:04Everybody felt nervous
05:05and so the stakes just felt high backstage.
05:08That's like a palpable energy.
05:10I actually think that that was my favorite time ever
05:13of singing The Joke.
05:14Is that right?
05:14Yeah.
05:15Wow.
05:16Who did you fan out about the most?
05:18Oh, I'm gonna have to go full Cher.
05:22And then also Kate McKinnon.
05:23Like, I cannot with her.
05:25She is so funny.
05:27And Lauryn Hill, too.
05:29I mean, right?
05:30You know, they pulled me right before Lauryn Hill went on,
05:33but I did chase her down at the after party
05:36and try and get her attention by tapping her shoulder
05:39and her fur coat was so thick.
05:40That was a big coat.
05:41Yeah.
05:42She couldn't feel it.
05:43But then she knew your name, right, you said?
05:45I mean, she knew it.
05:46Wow.
05:46And that's something I haven't totally got my head around.
05:49Well, Brandi, we love you.
05:51We love your music and you're always so great on SNL.
05:53So go inside and have some fun tonight.
05:55Thanks, it's good to be here.
05:55Thanks for coming through.
05:56I'm here with one of my favorites, Natasha Lyonne,
05:59and your favorite at home.
06:00Come on.
06:00And one of my favorites.
06:02Let's go.
06:03I mean, listen, we're going upstairs to watch the show.
06:07Are you popping into the show tonight?
06:09Hey, who knows?
06:10You never know.
06:11Expect the unexpected with this one.
06:13Hi, Rihanna.
06:14How are you?
06:17You snubbed Liam Shriver's handshake live on television.
06:20Oh, I did?
06:20Yeah.
06:21But it's all right.
06:22He's going to get over it.
06:23He's a handsome guy.
06:23He's got a lot going on.
06:25If he doesn't, I guess I'll have to do it a second time.
06:28We'll get him.
06:28We'll get him.
06:29Listen, I want to ask, when you're hosting the show
06:32and you're standing behind the door
06:34and they're about to go out there,
06:35what's going through your mind?
06:36Is it as scary as it seems?
06:38Oh, my gosh.
06:39Yeah, my gosh.
06:41But once you get through that part, you're like-
06:45You're soaring.
06:46You are having the most fun time of your life.
06:50Yeah.
06:52You can't believe you made it through.
06:53Yeah.
06:54Because your heart is palpitating so fast.
06:57When I hosted, at the last minute,
07:00they decided to throw me into the opening sketch.
07:04Yeah.
07:04So it was like, suddenly, we had been rehearsing it.
07:08I'd done the monologue before,
07:09so that was going to be my first thing.
07:11Totally.
07:11And then being in the cold open-
07:13Oh, that's a whole wrench in plans.
07:15So Daniel was like, wigs!
07:17And I came out there all scattered pants.
07:19How intense is that transition process between the sketches?
07:22Like, you're getting-
07:23You're literally physically pulled around.
07:26Hello, young Chloe.
07:27Oh, please.
07:29Get in here.
07:30Oh, hello.
07:33Oh, and-
07:34Hello, love.
07:35Yeah, we're all just going to sort of make out with each other.
07:37It's very fun because there's so much Velcro involved.
07:41A hundred percent.
07:41We're talking about getting pulled around the stage.
07:43Oh, I thought it was something else.
07:44I'll let you take over.
07:46I love you.
07:47Well, here is one of my favorite people in America, Sarah Sherman herself.
07:51Yeah.
07:52And tell them what they want you to know, that you can look stunning.
07:54I can look good.
07:59Say it on the mic, she looks stunning.
08:01She looks great.
08:02Yeah.
08:02He thought I was a woman.
08:05He thought I was a random woman walking down the street before you knew it was me.
08:10Yeah, but I didn't know for sure because your hair looks so different.
08:12Get out of here.
08:13The wig is laid.
08:15All right, so tell me.
08:17It's SNL 50.
08:18You're Sarah.
08:19You're part of this legacy now.
08:22Who is the person from before your tenure that you're like,
08:25I wish I could have jammed with them on the cast?
08:27Fred Armisen.
08:29Oh, absolutely.
08:30Yeah.
08:30Did you like my-
08:31Fred Armisen!
08:33She wants you to know that she can sing too.
08:36I can look good.
08:36I can sing.
08:37I can have a tiny waist.
08:39You're coming for Wicked 3.
08:44Not beating those, not being able to sing allegations.
08:47Don't make me laugh.
08:48My face looks good right now.
08:49All right, tell me this.
08:51What-
08:51So professional.
08:52Can you believe we're being so professional with each other?
08:54We're like rolling around in the dirt when the cameras aren't rolling.
08:57Well, what's the reaction that a sketch got that surprised you the most?
09:01Um, when a sketch that I thought was really funny,
09:04it shit and bombed so hard that the lights went out, basically.
09:08They actually were like, we have to shut 30 Rock down to save power.
09:11They've never once canceled a show mid-show,
09:13and they had to because my sketch was so bad.
09:17No, come on.
09:18I've had-
09:18You have 100% hit rate, like everyone that's ever worked here.
09:21What is it, batting a one million?
09:23Batting a one million, that sounds right.
09:25That's cute, Jacket.
09:26Yeah, no, what you can't see at home is that
09:29everyone here is in a cute jacket or dress.
09:32And turn the camera around, show the people.
09:36Come here, show them the jacket.
09:39Show the people, come on.
09:40Let's go, come on, Shelby.
09:42She was behind the camera with her.
09:43Producing the hell out of this and looking like that.
09:46No, no.
09:47So fashion's really important to you, huh?
09:50Yeah, my dress was $80 on eBay.
09:53No, it wasn't.
09:53Yes.
09:55My stylist was like, say it's vintage.
09:57I'm like, yeah, it's vintage $80 on eBay.
10:00You know what?
10:00It is vintage now.
10:02Congratulations.
10:04You made it this way.
10:05Can I show the people something?
10:06Yeah, no, show.
10:07Do it, have your fashion moment.
10:08Did you do the glam bot?
10:09I won't do it.
10:10Why?
10:11Because I'm going to look weird.
10:13So, like, embrace your weird.
10:16Show them what you want to show them.
10:17Is this it?
10:17They're rhinestone shrimp hanging off the bag.
10:20Oh, good.
10:20They're props from a sketch I did.
10:22I did.
10:23And that ties it all together, huh?
10:24Yes, they were from the sketch shrimp tower,
10:26which I'm sure everyone remembers.
10:27Shrimp tower.
10:28I'm hungry now for shrimp.
10:30Well, don't eat that one.
10:31It's covered in rhinestones.
10:32What can we expect tonight besides the unexpected?
10:35Me having two lines.
10:37But aren't you said...
10:38You said we were going to black out at the after party.
10:40Oh, we're blacking out.
10:42I'll start now.
10:43You want...
10:43I wish we had, like, fireball.
10:48All right, to Long Island Legends saying goodbye to you.
10:50This is Sarah Sherman, everybody.
10:51The best in the biz.
10:53I'm here with my pal, one of the best to ever do it.
10:55Ana Gasteyer.
10:56Come on.
10:57Hi.
10:57Hi.
10:58Oh, my gosh.
10:58This is so crazy and exciting.
11:00And I get to finally ask this question.
11:02Tell us about the jacket.
11:03Oh, thank you.
11:03I've been wanting to talk about it all evening.
11:05So I was going through a box of old clothes,
11:08vintage clothes from my childhood.
11:10And I came across this this year when I was telling my parents.
11:13It's a 1981 Saturday Night Live jacket.
11:16Oh, come on.
11:17Get that.
11:17That is a 1981 SNL jacket.
11:19My aunt worked at NBC here in 30 Rock in the 80s
11:23and gave it to me for Christmas
11:24because she knew I was a fan.
11:25Isn't that crazy?
11:26And so I thought tonight, I was like,
11:27I think I got to wear that jacket.
11:29You're made of stories from lore about SNL.
11:32They don't know because she talked about it on my podcast,
11:34but the Jimmy Carter story that you had.
11:36Yes, yes.
11:37Can you tell people that?
11:38Well, I mean, it's crazy.
11:39This is your podcast, really.
11:40Yeah.
11:41But yeah, it's basically, in summary,
11:42I was a childhood friend of Amy Carter's.
11:44Yes, Jimmy Carter's daughter.
11:46And kind of a weird series of coincidences.
11:48Became friends.
11:49And one night, sleeping over at the White House,
11:53went to get a snack in the middle of the night in 1977
11:56and came out to witness the president laughing
11:59at Dan Aykroyd's impression of him.
12:01Wow.
12:01Watching it by himself in the hallway
12:03and laughing and having a good time.
12:05And years later, you're one of the best to ever do it.
12:06You were like the star of the SNL 50 concert
12:09the other night.
12:10So much fun.
12:11A lot of stars.
12:12Or the explosion of musical talent.
12:15It was just brain bending for me as a music person.
12:18To be invited to do that was such an honor.
12:20Yeah.
12:21And so hilarious also to be sort of already feeling
12:24like the nerd in the cool music group
12:26and then dressed as Bobby Mohan Culp backstage.
12:29But it was extraordinary.
12:31And writing the Culps, which is the music teacher characters
12:34that Will and I did, we always did it with Paula Pell,
12:37who's a national treasure.
12:39Legend.
12:39Who's a really legendary writer from my generation
12:41at the show.
12:42Yeah.
12:42And always had my back.
12:43And so Paula and Will and I wrote the sketch.
12:46And working on the medley, it just
12:47brought back incredible memories,
12:49but also was like slipping into the most comfortable suit
12:51you had.
12:51Yeah, absolutely.
12:52You have so many iconic characters and moments
12:54on the show.
12:54But I wonder, do you have a defining moment for you
12:57that you can think about?
12:59Like if you've got to draw one moment up, what is it?
13:02I mean, there's so many that you have that are incredible.
13:04But I guess you always remember the moments when you feel like,
13:06oh my god, I'm not going to get fired.
13:08And for me, that's always dodgy there for a little while.
13:12For me, that was the night Martha Stewart's
13:13Topless Christmas aired, which was my first.
13:16I auditioned with a Martha Stewart impression.
13:18And then we did Topless Christmas.
13:20And it did really well.
13:21Yeah.
13:22I was like, oh, I think I'm not going to get fired.
13:24So yes, I remember that very well.
13:25I might be able to stick around here.
13:27Maybe I'll be here for six years.
13:28Yeah, you never think that.
13:29You think, maybe I won't get fired this year.
13:30But yeah.
13:31Is there a host from your time at the show
13:33that everyone wanted to be best friends
13:35with after they left and was missed?
13:37Well, you know, what happens on the show,
13:39I'm sure you know this from Bowen and all the people
13:41that you know.
13:41There is a sense of humility to almost anyone
13:45who comes through the door.
13:46Because it is live, because it is like a runaway train.
13:49I started from Monday.
13:51Every time I come back, I think, oh, I've got this down.
13:53It's Monday.
13:53And then the next thing you know, it's the next Monday.
13:56Because it's a nocturnal show.
13:57It's all being written creatively under the gun.
13:59So honestly, so many people are on their absolute best
14:03behavior, meaning they're game, and they're open,
14:07and they're trusting in a way that I sometimes am like,
14:09god, I might have been meaner.
14:12Like a Julianne Moore, Steve Buscemi, you know?
14:15Came in very game.
14:16So many people.
14:16David Allen Greer.
14:17People that came in just like ready to have fun.
14:20Yeah, it's the best.
14:21It's impressive.
14:22It's an impressive human skill.
14:24Because it really is about joy, ultimately, the show.
14:27I mean, you mean so much to so many people.
14:30So many diehards watching the show.
14:31Ana Gasteyer, you're the best.
14:33Enjoy the night.
14:33It's SNL 50, baby.
14:34I'm so honored to be here.
14:35And it's always great to talk to you.
14:37I love you.
14:39OK, I'm standing here with one of my favorite people
14:42in the world, not just on the show.
14:44Fred Armisen.
14:46Hi, Leslie.
14:47Hi, baby.
14:48I'm so happy to see you.
14:49I'm so happy to see you.
14:51Yo, I love that you play the drums.
14:53That's my favorite thing in the world.
14:55It's the best instrument.
14:56I mean, do you get?
14:58What do you love about SNL?
15:01I love how it's constantly changing.
15:04Yeah.
15:05I love that it's kind of like a chameleon.
15:08And so it just keeps turning into something else.
15:10And I love that.
15:11Because then I get to watch.
15:12Now, how do you come up with your characters?
15:14I want to know how you come up with your characters.
15:15How do you know that that character is going to kill?
15:19This is going to sound pretentious,
15:20but it just comes to me.
15:22I'm like, oh, yeah, sometimes people are like this.
15:24You know, like, it's just like a little voice
15:26that sort of appears.
15:28Now, when you play.
15:29And it doesn't always kill.
15:30Sometimes I try it, and it's like, it's not working.
15:33What about Prince?
15:34What made you want to do Prince?
15:35I'm a huge Prince fan.
15:37And I've been doing Prince impressions
15:40since I was maybe 20 or so.
15:41Really?
15:42Not on stage, but in my life, I would go to see him.
15:46I love Prince.
15:47What do you think about tonight?
15:49Like, what do you think is going to happen tonight?
15:51It's, first of all, everyone seeing each other
15:53and hugging each other, it's the best.
15:54It's the best.
15:55It's insane, right?
15:56Seeing people that you haven't seen
15:58or seeing people you haven't met.
15:59Is there anyone you haven't met that's been on?
16:03Yes, there were a couple.
16:04And it's almost like there are people
16:08from like the original cast of SNL,
16:11writers and stuff like that.
16:12So it's one of those things where I think,
16:14I'm like, I met this person.
16:15And then I'm like, oh, wait, I haven't met him.
16:17Oh.
16:19Have you ever done that?
16:20Yes, there's so many people that I haven't met.
16:22And I'm like, and then when they look at me
16:24and go, Lizzie Jones, I go, my head explodes
16:27because I'm like, they know me.
16:28Now, what about you?
16:29What do you love about SNL?
16:30I love everything about SNL.
16:32I love the game.
16:33It's like game day.
16:34You just never know what's going to happen.
16:35That's the thing I love.
16:37Still.
16:37You look so handsome tonight.
16:39And have a great night.
16:42Have a wonderful night.
16:43And I'll see you later, right?
16:44Yes.
16:45Yes.
16:46Fred Armisen, you guys.
16:48My baby daddy.
16:49OK, I am standing here with Jon Hamm,
16:52my future baby's daddy.
16:54Yes, yes, hopefully.
16:56If everything goes right.
16:57If everything goes right.
16:58It's going to be a long night.
16:59Oh, it's going to be a long night.
17:01How do you feel?
17:02How does this feel?
17:03Man, this whole, every year, this whole week
17:06has been insane.
17:07I mean, it must be the same for you.
17:09Everybody's your friend.
17:10It's like a reunion.
17:11It's a reunion.
17:12Yeah.
17:13And a 50-year reunion of so many people
17:15and so many generations.
17:16And you just, the smile's been on my face the whole week.
17:19Tell me something.
17:20Hosting, is that like one of the busiest weeks
17:24you've ever had or nerve-wracking?
17:27The first time I hosted, too, it was a classic case of SNL.
17:31It was Amy Poehler was nine months pregnant.
17:34Wow.
17:34Amy had her baby Saturday afternoon.
17:36Oh, wow.
17:37We had to completely rearrange the show.
17:39And Coldplay played another song.
17:41We had to cut a bunch of sketches
17:43and redo a bunch of sketches.
17:44So I showed up, and I'm like, let's do the show.
17:47They're like, no, no, no.
17:48It's completely different.
17:48Oh, OK.
17:50My first time.
17:50But every time, though, you get the calm.
17:52Every time is great.
17:52You kill it.
17:53It's so fun.
17:54Because you're like a natural comedian.
17:55Well, it's just fun.
17:57I remember when the first times I was hosting,
18:00I was sitting backstage waiting to go on.
18:01And the band's playing, and it's crazy.
18:03And I went, oh, wait a minute.
18:04It's like a roller coaster.
18:05You just got to hold on to the roller coaster.
18:06I always tell people, just submit.
18:08Don't fly off.
18:09Just submit.
18:09Yep, exactly it.
18:10Well, you look so handsome.
18:11Thank you, my dear.
18:12And I'll see you later.
18:13I'll see you later.
18:14For my adventure.
18:16Y'all give it up for Jon Hamm.
18:18OK, I'm standing here with Bad Bunny.
18:21I thought I'd never say that.
18:24He is so gorgeous.
18:25Oh, my God.
18:26My heart pumping and pumping.
18:28So you've been a host and a musical guest.
18:32Is that crazy?
18:33How does it feel doing that?
18:35It really feels really crazy.
18:38But the craziest part to me is that I really,
18:43I did enjoy more to be a host.
18:46You did?
18:46Than the music performed, the music guest.
18:51Is it because you got to be silly?
18:53Different characters?
18:54Yeah, different characters, different roles.
18:58It's something different from what I actually do.
19:02What was your favorite thing to do?
19:04About what?
19:05Which character did you play that was the funnest?
19:08That time, I really liked, like, I don't have,
19:12of course, obviously, the Pedro Pascal and Marcello's kid,
19:16the aunties.
19:18Yes.
19:18That was my.
19:19And you killed it.
19:21My favorite.
19:22But I really enjoyed the whole show.
19:26Do it twice.
19:29That was my very first.
19:32That was my very first.
19:34I swear, I swear.
19:35To do it twice.
19:36Yes.
19:36You loved it.
19:37Yes, I loved it.
19:38So you loved the rehearsal and the live.
19:40It was.
19:41Wow.
19:41It was that fun to me.
19:44Like I said, we're going to do it again.
19:47Yeah, and it's for the cast.
19:49We're like, oh my God.
19:50Wow, to me, that was the best thing.
19:52Wow, that is so cool to hear.
19:54Well, you're fine as hell.
19:57I already told you.
19:58How does that feel, huh?
20:01I don't know.
20:03Thank you for coming up here and talking to me.
20:06We're going to have a good time tonight.
20:08Yes.
20:08Looking forward to it.
20:09Y'all give it up for Bad Bunny, baby.
20:12OK, I'm standing here with the next president of the United States.
20:17Y'all give it up for Seth Meyers.
20:19Exciting way to find out.
20:22You are always my favorite person to ever deal with.
20:26I love you.
20:27I love being with you.
20:28I wish we'd overlapped more.
20:29No, I.
20:31I used to bribe you with Heineken's.
20:33Yeah, you did.
20:33I bribed him with Heineken's.
20:35You did.
20:35But we had fun.
20:36We had fun.
20:36We had so much fun.
20:38And two, that's when I found out how much of a beast of a writer you are.
20:43I like to get behind the keyboard.
20:44Yeah, I do.
20:46I'm a keyboard jockey.
20:47But how do you feel about all this?
20:48I feel weird, right?
20:50It's so freaking weird.
20:52I mean, it's weird and wonderful.
20:53And I love how much anxiety everybody has.
20:56No, I love how much Lauren hates it.
20:58Oh, he's not happy.
20:59He hates it so much.
21:01Also, it's like he planned a surprise party for himself.
21:05So it's all like surprise.
21:07Because everybody's like, no, I'm not going to do a speech.
21:10I was like, why are y'all making him torture?
21:12He was tortured last night.
21:14But he was loving it.
21:14He got to go back to work.
21:15He did.
21:15He was so happy last night.
21:17Literally.
21:17We should have been toasted.
21:17He said, I have to go.
21:18Yes, that was his speech.
21:20He was like, yeah, so the show is still going on and I have to go back now.
21:24And we're like.
21:25He's the best.
21:2550 years.
21:27He's the best.
21:27He's awesome.
21:28Yeah.
21:28What is your favorite memory from SNL?
21:30My favorite memory from SNL.
21:32And I know this sounds lame, but I just love that Thursday rewrite table.
21:35Yes.
21:35We're just sitting with a room full of writers.
21:37The hard part had been done.
21:38You're just pitching jokes, making each other laugh.
21:40It's so funny.
21:41It was the best.
21:41It's James.
21:42James Anderson.
21:44James and Kent literally are the best at that.
21:47Put them on the Mount Rushmore of writers.
21:50Seriously, they are so hilarious.
21:53Well, you look handsome.
21:54All right.
21:54Your wife is gorgeous.
21:56And you should be very lucky you have her.
21:58I love you.
21:59I love you, too.
22:01Seth Meyers.
22:02Oh, my God.
22:03I'm standing here with Pedro Pascal.
22:07Here he is.
22:12Have you ever had a busier week than hosting SNL?
22:17No, I have not.
22:18Really?
22:19No.
22:19From Monday night all the way to Sunday.
22:21Yeah.
22:22You know how it works.
22:22Yes.
22:23And no matter how much warning you get.
22:26And they don't tell you.
22:28You're like, yeah, I can do it.
22:31No, no.
22:31And then when they say it's live, do you lose every bit of your nerve?
22:36I feel like the intense structure of it helps with the panic of doing of the pressure.
22:44Right.
22:44You know what I mean?
22:45Right.
22:45Because there's such a ritual and ceremony to everything.
22:49You don't have time to think about anything else.
22:51Yes.
22:51And they're literally pulling you from every single direction.
22:54Like literally physically grabbing you.
22:56Physically grabbing you and pulling you.
22:58Yeah.
22:58Oh, how many times I've gone the wrong way and they pull you and be like, oh my God.
23:03When I used to work there, my assignment was always to tell the host, submit.
23:08Yeah.
23:09Submit.
23:09Just submit.
23:10Because it'll be much easier.
23:12And it won't hurt.
23:16But I am.
23:19Hey, y'all.
23:21Cluster pearls.
23:23You look so gorgeous tonight.
23:25Nikki Bell's going to love your outfit.
23:28And I love you.
23:31They haven't seen the brand.
23:35Thank you so much for coming and talking.
23:37Okay.
23:37I'm standing here with Sarah Silverman, as you don't know.
23:42Sarah, how you feel tonight, baby girl?
23:46I'm sucking it all in.
23:48And it's going to be a great show.
23:49I can't wait to see.
23:50Yes.
23:51When was the last time we saw each other?
23:53I'm going to tell you the last time I saw you.
23:54Okay.
23:55It was at a Sparks game.
23:58Because we love the Sparks, but no one loves the Sparks more than you.
24:01Nobody loves the Sparks more than me.
24:02That's my team.
24:03It's all Sparks gear.
24:04That's my team.
24:05That's my team, Sarah.
24:06We got to make sure that WNBA works it out.
24:09I know.
24:10What are you looking forward to tonight?
24:12Just the show.
24:13The monologues.
24:14Steve Martin, Martin Short.
24:16All the legends.
24:18All the awesome.
24:19You just ready to let out.
24:20Is it crazy, like, seeing all these stars in one place?
24:24Yeah.
24:24Yeah.
24:25I just associate.
24:26I'm going to be totally honest.
24:27Yeah, because I'm just like, I'm not here right now.
24:28I'm all dressed up.
24:29I got shoes and stuff.
24:31I just feel kind of, you know, it's not really like this.
24:35And then I just, you know, it's exciting to see people.
24:37But I get just as excited seeing them on TV, really.
24:40Yeah.
24:41I got to meet Pedro and Bad Bunny.
24:43Lord, my heart a-pitter-patter.
24:45Oh my gosh.
24:46They so fine.
24:47So fine.
24:47I got this dress two hours ago.
24:50It looks good, bae.
24:52When I think about how judgmental I was when I was young,
24:55a young comedian, I was like, you leprechauns.
25:00Now you're thinking about that.
25:01Now you're thinking about that.
25:02And I realized it's such a fun friend.
25:04It's very fun, especially when you're 50.
25:07Well, I'm so glad you came and talked to me.
25:09You look freaking gorgeous.
25:10Have a good time tonight, baby.
25:12And your Instagram is the greatest of all time.
25:14Oh, thank you.
25:15I love it so much.
25:16I appreciate you.
25:18Have a good time tonight.
25:20Oh my god.
25:20I'm standing here with Keke Palmer.
25:22This is insane.
25:24This is insane.
25:26You look freaking hot.
25:28Oh my gosh, girl.
25:29Yes, you do.
25:30You look fabulous as well.
25:31How are you feeling about tonight?
25:33I'm glad to be here.
25:34You know, I got an opportunity to do SNL with my son.
25:37Yeah, that's what I was going to say.
25:38My pregnancy reveal was amazing.
25:40But obviously, I've been a fan of the show for years.
25:42So it's great to just come here and celebrate.
25:44I mean, 50's a big deal.
25:45Yeah.
25:45Now, when you came and hosted, was it one of the hardest things
25:49you ever did or the busiest things you ever did?
25:51The busiest, and very challenging, but also very fun.
25:55Like, I live for a multi-cam type of vibe.
25:57So we got to do all the things that reminded me of my old days
25:59with True Jackson's EP.
26:00Oh, yes.
26:01But there were just other levels to it.
26:03Playing with the cast.
26:04It was great.
26:04Oh my god, girl.
26:07What was your favorite cast member, if I have to ask?
26:11My favorite cast member?
26:12That is so unfair.
26:13But I'm going to just go ahead and say Kenan Thompson.
26:15Set.
26:15We got to do Kenan and Kelly, which I grew up
26:17loving Kenan and Kel.
26:19And that's one of my favorite sketches we did on the show.
26:21But I also like Big Boy.
26:23We did like a song.
26:23Me and SZA did a song called Big Boy.
26:25Oh my, OK.
26:28Kenan is one of the, he's like, been here for half of the years, right?
26:33He's iconic, right?
26:34Yes, for sure.
26:35Well, I'm so glad you came up here and talked to me,
26:37because you look so beautiful.
26:39And I had to make sure you get on camera.
26:41Oh my god, thank you.
26:41So good to see you.
26:43Have a good day.
26:43Y'all give it up for Keke Palmer now.
26:45We all grew up watching the show.
26:47Anybody who loves comedy.
26:48We had our favorite cast and our favorite seasons.
26:51What do you remember growing up about SNL, and how did it impact you?
26:54The cast that affected me the most was the Kristen Wiig,
26:58Sudeikis.
27:00Younger side of it was Andy Samberg.
27:02That era was very formative for me.
27:06You know, that's kind of when I was in college.
27:08And Bill Hader.
27:10It just kind of helped establish what comedy could be to me.
27:14It's funny, because I've talked to my parents,
27:17and for them it was like Gilda Radner and all that.
27:19But I think that's what's cool about SNL too,
27:21is everyone has their own class that they watch
27:23to help form what comedy means to them.
27:27And then if you care about it enough, you go back and watch everything.
27:30But yeah, I guess most memorable.
27:32A very silly sketch that I love very, very much
27:34is Will Ferrell's Jeopardy sketches.
27:37Always my favorite, with Norm Macdonald.
27:38They mean a lot to me.
27:40Turd Ferguson and all that.
27:41Turd Ferguson.
27:42Sure.
27:43Great time.
27:43So those are some of my most memorable sketches.
27:46Well, if it inspired you even a little bit,
27:48SNL did something right in the world with all you've done.
27:50So Quinta, thanks so much for stopping through.
27:52Great to see you.
27:53Thank you so much.
27:53Have fun.
27:54Look who stopped by the red carpet with us.
27:56It is Paul Schaefer and David Letterman.
27:59Hey, guys.
28:00Paul, how are you?
28:01Nice to see you.
28:03Thanks for introducing us, guy.
28:04I've never met him before.
28:05Yeah, there he is.
28:06That's David Letterman.
28:07Very funny guy.
28:07You look tremendous tonight.
28:10Beautiful suit.
28:11It sure is.
28:11Thanks.
28:12It's a blue.
28:12It's a light blue.
28:14It's a little something different.
28:15I appreciate what you do with the pattern.
28:17It's a tailored, tailored look.
28:19It's a look.
28:19So we're live here on the red carpet right now.
28:22Just minutes to go now to the top of the hour,
28:24and this show will start.
28:25Paul, what does SNL mean to you, having worked so closely on it?
28:30I started here in 1975 with the first show,
28:34and I did the first five years.
28:36I was a pianist in the band and would write special material
28:41for the kids in the cast, the cast being Chevy Chase,
28:45Belushi, Gilda, Ackroyd, and that stuff.
28:48You know, I went on to do the Blues Brothers with them.
28:51Sure.
28:51A founding member.
28:52Yeah.
28:53It means an awful lot to me.
28:54How about, Dave, in terms of comedy, SNL means what?
28:59Well, this is a cultural landmark, to be sure,
29:02and we benefited.
29:03We got Paul from SNL, and many of the guests that we had on
29:07were always fantastic because he had been on NSL.
29:10NSL.
29:12Not suitable.
29:13Different show.
29:14Not suitable.
29:15Different show.
29:15No, we couldn't help but flourish because we were in the same building,
29:19so it was great for us.
29:21Did you have, Dave, when you came up watching some of these guys
29:24in the early days of the show, did you have favorites?
29:27Did you see something inspiring to you as a comedian?
29:29I remember when Adam Sandler came on, Chris Farley also.
29:33Chris Farley was kind of, one of us should have been fenced off.
29:38I just never quite knew what Chris was going to be up to,
29:42but that made him a great guest.
29:43And the same with Adam Sandler.
29:45The first time he was on, I think it was 14 or something,
29:48he just finished his paper route and came in,
29:51and I was bewildered by him,
29:53and now is there a bigger star than Adam Sandler?
29:55And it was great to know these people at the nascent stage of their career.
29:59Yeah.
29:59It was delightful.
30:01Paul, what has this weekend been like for you?
30:03You were great Friday night at the big concert,
30:05just to see old friends and to be such an important link in this chain.
30:09Well, it was a concert of a magnitude I wasn't expecting.
30:13It was great to be a part of it.
30:14Of course, working with Billy Murray, he and I are still in touch.
30:19He's always funny, one of the funniest.
30:21Right up there with Dave, you know.
30:23And when the two of them got together, I mean, that brought back a lot of memories.
30:27Well, it's so great to have you both here.
30:28We'll let you get inside.
30:29Good to see you both.
30:30Paul, Dave, thanks for stopping through.
30:32Happy to see you.
30:33Good to see you, Dave.
30:34Is there a meal?
30:35I don't know.
