ESPN had an article that suggested that the Commanders could move on from Marshon Lattimore... Should they consider it?
Transcript
00:00Speaking of which, NFL.com did a piece,
00:02bunch of veterans and listed,
00:05these are guys that you're not hearing a lot about,
00:07but could get cut and save their team a bunch of money.
00:09No, they listed on that list was Marshawn Latimore.
00:12I was really surprised to see that name.
00:15So I think if you're just putting together a list
00:18and you're, if you've got some formula
00:21where you just look up veterans who make a lot of money
00:24that are coming off of bad seasons,
00:27x-axis is how much money you make,
00:30y-axis is how bad of a season that you had.
00:32And then you want people in the bottom right quadrant,
00:35so to speak, right?
00:37Marshawn Latimore is gonna be in that quadrant
00:38because he is due against the cap this season, $18 million.
00:44And he was downright dreadful at times
00:47in the playoff run for Washington.
00:50We know they're probably not going to cut him
00:52because Adam Peters has come out and said as much,
00:54number one, because they just traded picks for him
00:57and it would look really, really bad
00:58if he played as poorly as he did this past year.
01:00And then they cut him before the final two years
01:03of the contract that he has left.
01:05But they could get out of the deal with zero dead cap.
01:07This is your one chance to bail.
01:09You've got an opportunity.
01:10When you get in the car and start driving,
01:12you cannot get out again.
01:13It's like the rollercoaster about to take off.
01:15You sat down, we're buckling up
01:17and you're looking at your kid who's a little nervous
01:19and you're going, hey, buddy,
01:20if you don't want to ride this thing,
01:22you got to make that decision right now.
01:24Because as soon as this thing leaves.
01:25When they lower those, the bars.
01:27We cannot come back.
01:28And so Washington has right now this moment to decide,
01:32am I paying Marshawn Latimore $18 million or not?
01:35But this guy, and I don't know, I've never heard of him,
01:37but it's a writer, does some fantasy stuff at nfl.com.
01:40He's just going through a bunch of the dudes
01:42that make a lot of money that didn't play well last year.
01:44And he's going, are we sure team shouldn't cut this player?
01:47And he listed Marshawn Latimore.
01:49Well, I think most of us have decided is coming back.
01:52And most of us think probably should come back
01:54based on what they gave up in the trade.
01:56But it is just another way to look at it.
01:57You know, it's like walking along
01:59and now somebody into binoculars and you're like,
02:00oh, I kind of see what you're talking about.
02:02$18 million is not nothing for a guy
02:04that played poorly last season.
02:06Yeah, and from the piece,
02:08and notably he was talking about Latimore.
02:09He was awful in the post season,
02:10earning a horrific 29.6 coverage grade from PFF
02:13and allowing 10 catches for 172 yards
02:15and a 136.6 passer rating on 14 targets.
02:18That doesn't even sound like
02:20all of the stuff that he allowed.
02:21With the release his entire $18 million cap,
02:24it would become savings in 2025.
02:27So when-
02:28What a huge amount of cap space.
02:30When you read that, you go,
02:32actually that makes a little sense.
02:34Now, I don't think it's on the table.
02:35I think-
02:36But that's two different things, right?
02:38Right.
02:39Does it make sense?
02:39And will they do it?
02:40Precisely, and that's where I was going,
02:41is I don't think that's happening.
02:43I think he's here.
02:44I think they're saying,
02:45we believe he's going to play better next year.
02:47And we didn't trade for him just for the stretch on,
02:48although it would have been nice,
02:50but we think we got something here
02:52and 18 million is going to be a bargain.
02:54If we sign someone like this in free agency,
02:55it would cost 25, 26 or so.
02:58So I don't think it's happening.
03:01Put that aside for a second.
03:03This is kind of reasonable.
03:04This makes sense to me.
03:05And I sort of didn't think about it this way,
03:07but now I'm kind of on the-
03:09I'm not agitating for it.
03:10I'm not sitting here telling you that I agree with this,
03:13but as someone who is not in the confident
03:15March on Lattimore camp,
03:17oh, I don't know.
03:18I don't know.
03:19I don't know if this is not something
03:20that Randy Dewey would have to consider.
03:21I am ambivalent toward Lattimore a little bit
03:25because I just have so many conflicting feelings now,
03:29right?
03:30The first of which is,
03:32I actually thought when they acquired him
03:34that he was still an outstanding DB.
03:37And I have to assume that that is the case.
03:40I think he was hurt.
03:41And then when he came back,
03:42he came back a little too soon and he wasn't a hundred
03:45percent and what I call chasing his tail,
03:48meaning, you know,
03:49he was kind of trying to get back up to speed at a hundred
03:52percent and it just, it didn't work.
03:54And I think he is a lot better than he played
03:56and he will be better this year.
03:57So I'm going to separate that.
03:59The other thing is though,
04:00there is no guarantee of that.
04:03He had a bunch of hamstring problems in New Orleans.
04:05Then he came here and wasn't that much healthier
04:08and wasn't a quick healer.
04:09He's not getting younger.
04:11Danny, 18 million against the cap.
04:13You get every single penny of it.
04:16It doesn't matter who we're talking about.
04:18If you're not a star and you're not kind of indebted to
04:21that player, I think it's gotta be a consideration.
04:24Now they don't really need $18 million.
04:28They already have the third most cap space.
04:30They're already not going to spend all the cap space they
04:32have.
04:32I'd love to sit here and tell you,
04:34they're going to go out and get a corner and an edge and a
04:37tackle and a wide receiver and a running back.
04:39And they're going to have 2 million left in cap space.
04:41They're going to spend right up to the limit.
04:44Neither of us think that that's going to happen.
04:47So the 18 is not really needed here.
04:49If they were minus $3 million against the cap,
04:52well, now we could have a different conversation
04:54and probably should have a different conversation where you
04:56need 18 million and there's no guarantee he's going to
04:59deliver the goods.
05:00So you might need that 18 million.
05:02The last point here is what you gave up for the trade.
05:04It would look really bad.
05:06It would be a huge loss.
05:07And the first huge loss for Adam Peters,
05:09if you were to cut this player now,
05:11which they're not considering, I don't think,
05:13because to your point,
05:14I really do believe that they think he's going to be awesome
05:16next year and for the next two years.
05:18And they think that that's why they acquired them and
05:19whatever they got, you know,
05:21after the injury this year was a bonus.
05:23But to that point,
05:25I do believe that Marshawn Lattimore at, you know,
05:30an $18 million rate would be viewed differently if they
05:33hadn't have just given up the multiple draft picks,
05:35which is not how you should operate.
05:37Some cost fallacy style here.
05:39Because I gave up picks doesn't mean I've now got to keep
05:42them on my roster.
05:43I don't think that should be a consideration at this point.
05:45The only consideration should be now that I've seen him in
05:48my building and my defense, what do I think he's going to be?
05:50What kind of guy is he in my locker room and how good a
05:52player is he going to be next year?
05:53And so I, some people would,
05:55would get really, really irritated if they,
05:58let's just say this comes true when they do cut them and
06:00save the money.
06:01I wouldn't, the attempt was very reasonable to me.
06:03You know what I mean?
06:04Like, I don't have a problem with you going,
06:06Hey, we're better than we thought we'd be.
06:07Let's change course a little bit.
06:08We didn't give up a one or a two.
06:11We need some help right now.
06:12We've got a guy for a couple of years that we think would
06:14really upgrade this position.
06:15After we cut the previous idiots,
06:17first round pick who played this position.
06:19We're awful at corner.
06:21We're trying to go do something special here.
06:23We can fix this right now.
06:25If a defensive end was available with a similar potential
06:28impact for the same cost, I probably would have done that.
06:30Same with a couple other spots.
06:32So I don't begrudge the attempt at all.
06:34When you're trying to build on the fly a four time,
06:38or maybe it's five time pro bowler is not usually available
06:41for you, you know, sort of with, with,
06:43with the team that's in salary cap,
06:44how like the saints are.
06:45So I don't, I have no issue with the attempt to me.
06:48Like I I'm with you in the sense that that's very like bad
06:51management.
06:52And that's like a very Bruce Allen thing to do to me.
06:54And I'm not calling Adam Peters that,
06:55but saying like, we gave this up for him.
06:57We got to see it through.
06:59No, you don't.
07:00You got to be filled a really good team.
07:01And, and they know better than I do.
07:04They need, they need to be able to, to say with confidence,
07:07the reason he did not play well was health and hamstring
07:11stuff. If that's the case, fine.
07:13I'm willing to give, to give that, you know, an audience to
07:16me, I'm nervous about that guy.
07:18Should they be thinking about 18 million as being as
07:23valuable as what Lattimore could give them next year?
07:26Should this even be a consideration where it seems like it's
07:29not, it seems like they made the decision when they made the
07:31trade that they're bringing him in for three years,
07:34whereas they have a get out of jail free card and they can
07:37get 18 million without a single penalty for one cent this
07:41off season.
07:42Is this something they should be thinking about with
07:44Lattimore? Yes or no?
