For a brief period, the "Knuckleball" technique broke football, but absolutely nobody could understand why... All of a sudden, balls were swerving chaotically through the air, making it near-impossible for goalkeepers to react. This turned into such a problem that Adidas called in NASA, who determined what was happening after running some tests. Turns out, soccer balls had gotten so round that they couldn't grip the air, resulting in a phenomenon called drag crisis (AKA--the Knuckleball.)

I'll level with you--this is my absolute favorite technique in football, however, FIFA disagreed. They determined the balls were giving players an unfair technological advantage, which resulted in a major design change from Adidas... For the 2014 World Cup, they increased the panel count, deepened the seams, and added a bumpy texture (similar to a golf ball.) The result? Less round balls = less knuckle, and less knuckle = better flight. To this day, this is how footballs are produced, which is why--in the modern game--true knuckleballs are extremely rare. Do you think it's time for them to make a comeback, or was FIFA right to nerf this overpowered technique? #football #soccer #fifa #worldcup #sports #skills #ball #goals #technology #science #physics #nasa #futbol #respect #tech #cool #facts #futebol #ronaldo #shorts #footballshorts

00:00I've watched this free kick so many times, until this day, it doesn't make sense to me.
00:05Do not worry, because you're not alone.
00:07The knuckleball technique is so confusing, it took NASA to figure it out.
00:11Footballs are supposed to be round, right?
00:14That's what everybody thought.
00:16In 2010, Adidas created the first ever perfectly round ball.
00:19It was also the last.
00:21All of a sudden, shots were swerving in completely random directions,
00:25making it nearly impossible for goalkeepers to react.
00:28Absolutely no one could explain why.
00:30That is, until Adidas called in NASA.
00:33Turns out, when a ball is too round, it has no way to grip the air around it.
00:37This triggers a phenomenon called drag crisis, leading to an erratic, unpredictable flight path.
00:42You know this as a knuckleball.
00:44I think it's beautiful, but FIFA called it something else.
00:47Overpowered.
00:48Adidas designed their next World Cup ball with more panels, deeper seams, and a bumpy texture,
00:53In motion, less round equals less knuckle, and less knuckle equals better flight.
00:58To this day, this is how footballs are designed.
01:00Which is why, in the modern game, you almost never see a true knuckleball anymore.
