The 2019 ban preventing controversial preacher Dr. Zakir Naik from delivering public talks is no longer in effect, says Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail.
Responding to a question from RSN Rayer (PH-Jelutong) in the Dewan Rakyat on Thursday (Feb 20) about whether the ban had been lifted following Naik's recent talk in Perlis, Saifuddin clarified that the restriction was imposed in 2019 while authorities investigated two statements he had made.

00:00Before we move on to the next issue,
00:02Kleng and I have raised the issue of the ban on Zakir Naik,
00:08where I was informed that in 2019, the police imposed a ban on him.
00:16The purpose of the ban was because he said things that touched the sensitivity of the people and religion.
00:24According to the records, two things were mentioned by him in Kota Bharu.
00:29First, he said that Chinese people need to return to China.
00:34Second, he said that Hindus tend to support Narendra Modi more than Mahathir.
00:41After that, he was investigated and the ban was imposed.
00:46My question is specific.
00:48Was the ban pulled back?
00:51Because recently, he has spoken in Perlis.
00:55The purpose of my question is not to touch the religion or Islam.
01:03I want to ask whether the ban imposed on him has been lifted.
01:09I know that I do not object to anyone's religious speeches,
01:14unless it involves Zakir Naik specifically.
01:19Because he is someone who can stir up controversy in this country.
01:24Thank you, Minister. Please explain.
01:25Thank you, Jelutung.
01:27In the 2019 case, I was also a minister, but I was in the Ministry of Trade.
01:33I still remember the two incidents.
01:36The ban at that time was because the investigation was pending on those two incidents.
01:44In 2019, when the investigation was opened and carried out,
01:50at that time, the ban was imposed.
01:54For that reason, I want to go back to now.
01:56Now, the ban is no longer there.
01:58Because it only refers to the time of the investigation
02:01on the two statements that were made in the speech
02:04in Kota Bharu and in Perlis.
02:06So, to answer Jelutung's question,
02:08is the ban now?
02:10The ban is no longer there.
02:11Now.
