00:00The very first sewage and solid waste treatment plant
00:03is now helping to maintain the cleanliness in El Nido, Palawan
00:07which is a tourist destination.
00:09The natural plant is also helping to contain the contamination of water.
00:14Jesse Etienza is the center of the news.
00:19This is the town of El Nido, located in the province of Palawan.
00:24You will be amazed by the natural beauty.
00:28Because the place is far away,
00:29the business is based in the tourism industry.
00:33At the same time, the problem with sewage treatment
00:37is that it is possible to cause pollution to the water
00:39and damage to the environment.
00:42That's why in 2023,
00:44the Palawan Provincial Government opened,
00:47through the Provincial Water Development Office of Palawan Water,
00:51the very first sewage and solid waste treatment plant
00:55that is powered by solar energy.
00:58The main purpose of our STP here in the town of El Nido
01:02is to treat three types of waste
01:04because that is what causes pollution.
01:06Wastewater,
01:08septage,
01:08and biodegradable solid waste.
01:11There are a lot of tourists coming here
01:13and it's becoming crowded.
01:16And since it's overcrowded,
01:18the environment can no longer have self-cleansing.
01:23With the help of the sewage treatment plant,
01:25the wastewater is directly collected from the septic tanks
01:30of each house or structure connected to the facility.
01:33According to experts,
01:35it avoids contamination of the water beneath the ground.
01:39As to the Local Government Unit Ordinance of 2002,
01:44Series of 001,
01:45it mandates that all the residentials,
01:48commercials, and any private establishment
01:51should be treated for their wastewater disposals.
01:55Be it be connected or they should have their own
01:59sewage solid waste treatment plant facility.
02:02According to the Association of Accredited Tourist Accommodation of El Nido,
02:06or AATAEN,
02:08all of their 70 members of the tour operators
02:12are now using the sewage treatment plant.
02:15Let's just think about the future of El Nido.
02:18Let's bread and butter the environment,
02:20especially in our tourism area.
02:23So, it will add more years to El Nido, right?
02:28Like 10, 20, 30 years.
02:30Because if we don't take care of it,
02:32maybe in 10 years, El Nido will be gone.
02:34Correct?
02:34The environmental impact is huge
02:37when it comes to environmental issues.
02:40It will create more opportunities
02:43for those who will benefit in the future.
02:47The Department of Environment and Natural Resources
02:51also approved the municipal government of El Nido
02:53for the construction of the facility.
02:56As of now, 80% of the residential,
02:59commercial, and institutional structures
03:02are now connected to the sewage treatment plant.
03:05From the town of El Nido in the province of Palawan,
03:09Jesse Atienza for Pambansang TV in Bagong, Philippines.
