Global music stars eye India, but show needs fine-tuning
With Coldplay and Ed Sheeran among the superstars who have played to packed-out crowds in India recently, there is increasing talk that the world's most populous nation could soon become a mainstay of the global touring schedule. However, a lack of world-class venues to host big-name events has left fans wanting, with complaints ranging from filthy conditions, poor security and technical problems among the issues causing headaches for organizers.
Avid concert-goer Sheldon Aranjo grabbed public attention by writing a public post after wetting himself at a Bryan Adams show, saying there was a lack of toilets. "We are bringing international acts, we are paying on par with people abroad," he tells AFP. "Why can't I expect an international quality event?"

00:00Of course, I've now become famous for being the guy who paid to pee in his pants.
00:14That post went viral.
00:16And I've sort of become the poster boy for incontinence, which I'm not ashamed of.
00:22So I had to actually dash through the metal detectors again, dodge the guards, run outside.
00:31And I found the there was a tree near the toilet, there was a line there as well.
00:36So I before I could reach the toilet, I found the tree, half of it came on the tree, half
00:42of it came onto my pant.
00:43We are bringing down international acts, we're charging international money, right, we're
00:50paying on power with people abroad.
00:53Why can't I expect an international quality event?
01:04As we all know, India has become the most populous country in the world.
01:08So if you are an international artist who is seeing a significant number of streams
01:13coming from India, a significant number of fans on your social media, it would behoove
01:19you to look at India as a realistic touring destination.
01:24These are teething issues.
01:26These are just growing pains as we come into our own as an industry.
01:30I think it's very rare, I think ultimately, you know, maybe 10-15 more years down the
01:34line, we're going to be able to look back and do some kind of a more analytic take on
01:39what has taken place in these last couple of years in terms of what the numbers are,
01:43what the revenue has been.
01:44Right, and there are people who are willing to spend on it, there are people who are willing
01:46to travel out of their way from different places to come in together and to enjoy something
01:51like that.
01:52So I think this is a stepping stone for us, we're opening a door for something that is
01:57new, which we haven't experienced before.
01:59And it gives us an idea that we have achieved something like the stadium in Ahmedabad, so
02:03we can try and achieve it at other places also.
02:13The tickets got sold out so quickly that we were not even prepared, like we were sitting
02:20with multiple systems to book those tickets.
02:23And he was luckily able to book our tickets, so it was like a really, really proud moment
02:27ki we were able to crack it, like we were able to make it, we were able to get the tickets.
02:33It was a really, really happy moment for us.
02:36So what happened was I was trying to be over smart.
02:39So as soon as they announced the concert dates, I booked my flight tickets, I booked my stay
02:43because I wanted to get there first because they would, you know, hike the prices.
02:47But what happened was I could not get the tickets on any of the sales, so I tried getting
02:52it through resellers and all of that and they were charging a bomb.
02:56But finally today I caved in and, you know, secured the tickets.
02:59So I'm glad to be here.
03:01I thought I would not make it, so just happy to be here.
03:03Yeah, so the MRP is 4.5, I ended up paying 10.5.
03:09That's a lot.
03:10That's quite a bit.
03:11But I hope it's worth it.
03:12Lola is a worldwide, you know, famous festival.
03:16India and Mumbai is hungry for large scale events, international artists, local artists,
03:23you know.
03:24People are hungry for such events, so definitely, that's why we come.
03:28Yeah, I mean, I don't think you'll find a lot of countries with a population like India
03:34how they want to witness music, the music crowd.
03:37I don't think you'll find it in a lot of countries.
03:39I think India has the place to be if you want to, like, hold on.
04:07Yeah.
04:08Yeah.
04:09Yeah.
04:10Yeah.
