Seven people have been hospitalised after a car ploughed into a crowd near Cessnock in the Hunter region. Two of the victims are children aged 8 and 10. They were among onlookers at a well-known site for hoons and tik-tokers, glorifying wheel spinning manoeuvres.

00:00It was just after midnight when emergency crews raced to an industrial area known as
00:07the Hunter Economic Zone. A blue car lost control, rammed into two other vehicles and
00:13ploughed into spectators.
00:16There was people out there driving in a manner dangerous. There was two children and five
00:20adults taken to hospital, so seven in total. That included the driver.
00:25Among the victims were two girls. One was suspected internal injuries and a broken leg.
00:30It is very, very concerning that we've got eight and ten year olds out at a street racing
00:36event at that time of night.
00:38The 18-year-old male driver was treated for head and facial injuries after allegedly being
00:43attacked by the crowd.
00:45We will believe some of those injuries were caused as a result of assaults due to the
00:50manner of his day and the accident that was caused.
00:53All of the injured were brought here to Newcastle's John Hunter Hospital. The hospital says five
00:58of them, including the driver, remain in a serious but stable condition. He's under police
01:04guard and is expected to be charged soon.
01:07There has been previous incidents there. We included in our tasking, we've had operations
01:13specifically targeting that area.
01:15Police say they're working to stop dangerous driving in the area.
