Trump’s rhetoric ignites maple leaf pride as Canadian flag sales soar
Canadian flagmaker Flags Unlimited's sales have doubled from a year earlier, the company's owners said on Feb. 12, 2025 as tensions with the neighboring United States fuel a wave of national patriotism. The increase in sales comes ahead of Canada's National Flag Day on Feb. 15, marking the 60th anniversary of the red and white maple leaf banner's debut in Ottawa. Matt Skipp, co-owner of Flags Unlimited in Barrie, north of Toronto, attributes the spike in demand to threats from US President Donald Trump over Canadian sovereignty.

00:00...
00:28This, traditionally, is probably the lowest part of our season.
00:33Everybody's hibernating. Dark days of winter.
00:36You don't think of flying a flag on a pole outside.
00:40Excepting, there's a few obvious things that are really impacting that seasonal trend this year.
00:46Would be politics.
00:50Our friend south of the border.
00:53People are going to get mad at me for saying friend.
00:55But obviously the Trump tactics and threat to our sovereignty is spiking flag sales in what traditionally would be a week period.
01:06Our volumes are double what they would normally be at this time of year.
01:12And we think that this is going to be a huge year for flag sales in Canada.
01:24You guys are done?
01:26...
01:50Year over year, we know because we ship early to our large mass merchandise clients.
01:57Their orders are up significantly.
02:01We'll know more about the year in the next month or so.
02:06But I hesitate to put a number around it.
02:10But I would think sales are going to be up 30%.
02:17Probably more.
02:19This is the first time I've ever really concerned about actually running out of product.
02:25As a management team, we're talking about extra shifts, extra supplies to try to keep on top of demand that we anticipate coming.
02:39...
03:03We're not the enemy. It's hard to understand why we're being attacked.
03:08The auto industry that I work in, it's all integrated. Canada, Mexico, U.S.
03:13So it's kind of hard to understand, but we've got to stand up for Canada.
