00:00Indian Coast Guard ship Samundra Pehradar is berthed at Minarashit from 1st of Feb 2020
00:05at a three-day goodwill visit.
00:07Samundra Pehradar is the second pollution-control vessel in the Indian Coast Guard's fleet.
00:12The ship was indigenously built by ABG Shipyard Surat. It was commissioned in the year 2010.
00:19The ship is equipped with state-of-the-art pollution response and control equipment,
00:23including containment equipment such as high-sprint booms and river booms,
00:28recovery devices such as skimmers, side-sweeping arms,
00:31and storage devices such as oil recovery operation tanks and inflatable bards.
00:36The ship will be undertaking various maritime-related joint training manoeuvres
00:40with UAE maritime agencies during the three-day visit, which will include maritime pollution
00:45response, maritime search and rescue, and maritime law enforcement.
00:49The ship is commanded by DIG Anwar Khan.
00:52Coast Guard is transnational and does not believe in boundaries because
00:57it believes in making the sea safe for the mariner and more than that,
01:04secure for the country for its economic interest.
01:07We all are also aware that with the increase in traffic, there is always a chance of an
01:16accident and incident. And in countries where oil production is a major area,
01:24any kind of incident that can lead to an oil pollution is a cause of concern.
01:28We all are also concerned about the marine environment, which is not only fragile,
01:32it is also difficult to manage and maintain.
01:36India has taken the lead in acknowledging this challenge and is the first country in the IOR
01:43to have built in a Coast Guard ship with all the capability, namely containment,
01:50recovery, storage and disposal. And as our country is promoting the idea of Make in India,
01:58this platform, which is Made in India, is a symbol of Make in India and a proud piece of
02:05presence among the mariners.
02:07We are pushing forward in terms of bilateral relations with the UAE
02:13in a variety of spheres and defence is certainly one of them.
02:19But to have a ship visit here and have exchanges between our personnel
02:26is something which is a very important part of things. I was just discussing with Brigadier
02:32Abdullah the fact of sharing of people in different staff courses and I have taken on
02:39board his point that we need to get more people to come here, even if it means them learning the
02:44Arabic language. But we will certainly take that point and it is a valid one. But I certainly agree
02:50because while this is one level of people coming here and having exchanges, people coming and
02:55studying and spending time with their counterparts takes the relationship to another level.
03:00We certainly value the UAE officers and staff who come across to India to study
03:05in our defence courses and we will certainly reciprocate that in due course.
03:11We have been trying to have a fair number of exchanges, particularly on the naval side and
03:16I am pleased that two years ago we had the first naval exercises in UAE waters and we are hopeful
03:26that next month we will have another exchange in Indian waters and I hope that this will continue
03:31and keep up the momentum. The ship will be berthed at Mina Rashid until Tuesday,
03:36the 4th of Feb 2020 as a part of its visit to Gulf countries. Sonia Shah, Gulf News.
