00:00Sorry, I was like, wah!
00:03Good, you've got an eyelash, may I?
00:05I have, yeah.
00:05Let me just take your... Do you want to take your...
00:07One of my three wishes.
00:09Yeah. Oh yeah, whoops, I got rid of it, sorry.
00:11The wish still counts.
00:11It's okay, don't worry.
00:14Number one, I wanted, of course, to just humanise her, right?
00:18I think that when you're taking an animated character
00:22and translating that to live action,
00:26I think it's important to make her feel human
00:27so that people can relate to her, you know, she's not perfect.
00:31Also, she's a woman, she can be many different things,
00:34you know, not just one thing.
00:35So I think definitely giving her depth
00:37and making her feel well-rounded.
00:39I wanted to make her feel mature
00:41in a way that she wasn't a young girl, you know?
00:44And ultimately, she's a leader, she's a politician.
00:47She understands her duty.
00:49I felt so empowered watching her growing up.
00:52She was one of my favourite Disney princesses.
00:54So I wanted to keep that feeling,
00:56but just modernise her for 2019.
01:00Showtime.
01:01No, I'm in charge, okay?
01:02I say when it's time.
01:07Really?
01:08Yeah, I remember the test, screen test with Mina
01:13and we just connected, you know?
01:16I think for me, what stood out watching Mina
01:18and kind of working with him
01:20was the fact that he added,
01:23he brought so much depth to the character.
01:25Aladdin, of course, is fun and cheeky
01:27and all of these great things,
01:30which I think he has just in his smile, you know?
01:33I think that people fall in love with him.
01:35But I also think that he added depth and a vulnerability,
01:38which I think is really important for this character,
01:41who is, you know, going on a journey of self-discovery.
01:44So I think for me,
01:45I really connected with him on that level.
01:48And really, you know, their connection,
01:50Jasmine and Aladdin, is profound.
01:52You know, they both feel trapped in some way
01:54and that's how they connect.
01:56So that's, for me, I remember walking out and thinking,
02:00well, if I was casting, yeah.
02:02So, and obviously, Disney, good job.
02:07For me, growing up, one of the reasons I think I felt empowered
02:10or why I loved Jasmine so much,
02:12my two favourites actually were Mulan and Princess Jasmine.
02:15And Mulan specifically, I think personality-wise,
02:17I just loved everything that she represented.
02:20I loved, you know, that she was a warrior,
02:23that she sacrificed for her family,
02:24that she's a born leader.
02:26For Princess Jasmine, the kind of, that she was outspoken,
02:30but also just that I saw myself in her.
02:32You know, when you're a kid, like, I could play her.
02:34She was my princess.
02:35I kind of, you know, you almost feel an ownership.
02:38Yes, I think that there are so many nuances in this movie
02:41that even, you know, for adults that are watching,
02:43can kind of connect to.
02:45But when you're really young, you just see someone that you,
02:48if you see someone that you feel like represents you in any way,
02:51there's a real power in that.
02:53Also, just getting rid of these myths that we,
02:57you know, movies that have a diverse cast can't,
03:00you know, won't necessarily do well,
03:03or, you know, the idea that a female lead,
03:06that, you know, that's not, a movie like that's not going to do well.
03:09And we've just had Captain Marvel that just made a billion dollars.
03:12So for me, I love the fact that the world is telling,
03:17you know, telling everyone, we want to see diverse cast.
03:21We want to see representation.
03:23That's just what we want to see.
03:24You know, I'm getting very passionate here.
03:26That's just what we want to see.
03:27We don't, we don't want to see,
03:30well, that's what we want to see.
03:31And I think that that's something that's really exciting moving forward
03:34and what I love about what I'm seeing in movies now.
03:39Sorry, I was like, ah!
