President Donald Trump is known to drink many Diet Cokes, but one thing you’re not likely to ever see him using again is a paper straw.
On Monday, Trump said he is banning federal use of paper straws, saying they “don’t work” and don't last very long, and instead he wants the government to exclusively move to plastic.
Trump’s crusade against paper straws is nothing new. His 2020 presidential campaign branded them as “liberal” and sold nearly half a million dollars worth of Trump-branded plastic straws.

00:00The environmental impact of plastic straws versus paper straws is entirely unclear.
00:04This has cost both the government and private industry an absolute ton of money and left
00:09consumers all over the country wildly dissatisfied with their straws.
00:13So we're asking aspects of the federal government, federal departments and agencies to look at
00:18their existing procurement processes and we're asking your domestic policy council to look
00:23holistically at this issue to address it and it really is something that affects ordinary
00:28Americans in their everyday lives.
00:30We're going back to plastic straws.
00:31These things don't work.
00:33I've had them many times and on occasion they break, they explode.
00:38If something's hot, they don't last very long, like a matter of minutes, sometimes a matter
00:43of seconds.
00:44It's a ridiculous situation.
00:46So we're going back to plastic straws.
00:49I think it's okay.
01:01And I don't think that plastic's going to affect a shark very much as they're eating,
01:05as they're munching their way through the ocean.
