00:00As far as chemistry goes, it's also one of the few movies where you are rooting for the ageing couple rather than the new one.
00:12Hi, this is Manjusha Radhakrishnan from Gulf News Tabloid and I've just been to watch De De Pyaar De,
00:18a romantic comedy starring Ajay Devgn, Rakul Preet Singh and Thabu.
00:23It's directed by Akhivali and talks of a 50-year-old man, well-preserved investment broker played by Ajay Devgn.
00:31His name is Ashish Mehra. He falls in love with a 26-year-old gregarious and gorgeous Rakul Preet Singh.
00:38Her name is Ayesha and together they embark on this whirlwind romance.
00:43Things are going great between them. They are having these intimate dates.
00:47They are going on vacations and they are going around London without a care in the world.
00:53But Ashish Mehra decides to take the relationship to the next level.
00:56He wants to introduce his bubbly girlfriend to his estranged wife, played beautifully by Thabu.
01:03Now, this is one of the rare films where the second half is way better than the first half.
01:08The first 30 minutes is a bit of a yawn because you have an actor like Ajay Devgn.
01:13Ajay Devgn is a very accomplished actor romancing a 26-year-old.
01:17Novelty wears off very quickly. The sheen just wears off.
01:20But when Thabu comes into the picture, it's a whole new story.
01:24We have the national award-winning actress like Thabu take command of the movie and elevate the script to a whole new level.
01:31In fact, one of the best parts about this film is Thabu.
01:34Thabu, along with Jimmy Shergill, who plays a smarmy suitor, always carrying organic fruits with him, bring on the laughs.
01:42To be fair, it's not that the others are bad. It's just that Thabu is really good at what she does.
01:47Ajay Devgn and Rakul Preet Singh, they don't have much chemistry together.
01:51They look a bit odd. They're an oddball couple.
01:54And you never fully realize why does a lady like Rakul Preet give this man so much rope to cling on.
02:02At some point, you think that Ajay Devgn's character, Ashish Mehra, is a bit of a can.
02:08And you wonder why are these women pining after a man who's just a man-child.
02:12So that's one of the things that really don't make much sense in this romantic comedy.
02:16As far as wits go, I think it's the second half that's more witty.
02:20However, during the climax, things get a bit bizarre and complicated.
02:24Another downside is to see actor Alok Nath.
02:27You know, Alok Nath is one of the actors who has been implicated and accused of sexual misconduct.
02:35And to see somebody like him crack a few body jokes, it just leaves a bitter taste in our mouth.
02:42I don't enjoy it and I have to admit that I'm one of the few people who cannot separate the person from the artist.
02:49I'll be very honest. Somehow seeing Alok Nath was very distasteful on screen.
02:53And although the rest of the cast is very engaging, I think that's a blip in this film.
02:58Regarding the length, the movie would have benefited a lot from a bit of trimming of the fat.
03:02Especially the first half.
03:04There's no need to see the entire whirlwind courtship between a 50-year-old investment broker and a 26-year-old woman
03:13who is an engineer but rarely does anything for a living other than look fit as a fiddle and look gorgeous in skimpy clothes.
03:20Rakul Preet Singh is fetching, but when it comes to histrionics, I think it's Thabu that takes the cake.
03:26It's safe to say that you can put a ring on this, but there are times when this feels like a messy and complicated affair.
03:32I've gone with 3 out of 5. For my full review, go to gulfnews.com.
