00:00Good day. Welcome to the Gulf News update for Monday, September the 10th. Here are the
00:07top stories at this hour.
00:09Sweden may face months of political gridlock after an inconclusive election result left
00:14the biggest Scandinavian economy without a clear candidate to form a government. Neither
00:20the Social Democrat-led coalition of Prime Minister Stefan Lofven nor the Opposition
00:26Alliance bloc won enough votes to form majority governments. The anti-immigration Sweden Democrats
00:32were poised to get about 62 seats, not quite as many as some pre-election polls indicated.
00:39Novak Djokovic on Sunday won his 14th Grand Slam singles title, fighting off a spirited
00:45but visibly tiring Juan Martin Del Potro to earn a 6-3, 7-6, 6-3 victory. Djokovic, who
00:52also won the Wimbledon title this year, was too quick for Del Potro and his endurance
00:57stood him in good stead.
00:59Meanwhile, Serena Williams was fined $17,000 for committing three code violations during
01:05her US Open final loss to Naomi Osaka on Saturday. Williams got the first code violation for
01:12illegally receiving coaching early in the second set of the match. Williams continued
01:17to berate Ramos, calling him a thief and a liar.
01:20Miss New York Nia Imani Franklin was named Miss America 2019 at Atlantic City. Her victory
01:28Sunday night resurrected a string of successes the Empire State has had in the pageant in
01:33recent years. Mallory Hagan, Nina Davaluri and Kira Kazentsev won the title from 2013
01:41to 2015, competing as Miss New York. A classical vocalist whose pageant platform is advocating
01:48for the arts, Franklin sang a selection from the opera La Boheme.
