00:00Good day, welcome to the Gulf News Update for Wednesday, August the 9th.
00:08Here are the top stories at this hour.
00:10In an exchange of threats, US President Donald Trump warned Pyongyang of fire and fury like
00:16the world has never seen, and the North's military claimed it was examining plans for
00:21attacking Guam.
00:22The high-level tit-for-tat follows reports that North Korea has mastered a crucial technology
00:28needed to strike the United States with a nuclear missile.
00:32Despite regular North Korean threats against Guam, a US territory in the Pacific about
00:373,400 km from the Korean Peninsula, it is extremely unlikely that Pyongyang would risk
00:44the assured annihilation of its revered leadership with a pre-emptive attack on US citizens.
00:50It is also not clear how reliable North Korea's mid-range missiles would be in an attack against
00:56a distant target given the relatively few times they have been tested.
01:01As the crisis with Qatar entered its third month, efforts to break the stalemate are
01:06intensifying amid renewed diplomatic efforts by Kuwait and the US.
01:11Tim Lenderking, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Arabian Gulf Affairs in the Near East
01:16Bureau and retired General Anthony Charles Zinni arrived in Kuwait on the first leg of
01:22a tour that will include Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Bahrain, Egypt and Qatar.
01:28The Arab Quartet wants Qatar to crack down on financing terrorism, its support for the
01:34Muslim Brotherhood and wants it to close down the Al Jazeera news channel.
01:39Doha has yet to act on any of their demands.
01:42Country music legend Glen Campbell, the rhinestone cowboy who sold millions of albums over a
01:48career that spanned decades, has died at the age of 81 after a long battle with Alzheimer's
01:54disease, his family announced.
01:56Campbell achieved crossover success on the US and British pop charts starting in the
02:011960s with hits including Rhinestone Cowboy and Wichita Lineman.
02:07In his early career, Campbell performed as a session musician for legends like Elvis
02:12Presley and Frank Sinatra.
02:14And finally the weather, today's high across the UAE will be 46 degrees Celsius dropping
02:19to 31 degrees at night.
02:21That's all for now.
