00:00Good day, welcome to the Gulf News Update for Tuesday, August 8.
00:06Here are the top stories at this hour.
00:09Kenyans queued in large numbers through fields and along pavements to vote in the latest
00:14electoral showdown between the country's main political dynasties.
00:19Shrouded in fears of violence, the close-fought clash pits President Uhuru Kenyatta, 55, the
00:26businessman son of Kenya's founding president, against Raila Odinga, a 72-year-old former
00:32political prisoner and son of Kenya's first vice president.
00:36The arch-rivals are facing each other for the second time.
00:40Opinion polls have put them neck-and-neck after two months of campaigning.
00:44The winner needs one vote more than 50 per cent.
00:48The Ministry of Climate Change and Environment has issued a circular to local authorities
00:53to ensure UAE markets are free of contaminated eggs imported from the Netherlands.
00:59The ministry said it has also tightened the controls on shipment of eggs and other food
01:04products to ensure their safety and fitness for human consumption.
01:09RAT Bank said it will stop clearing cash cheques starting September 1 as part of efforts to
01:15protect customers from potential risk of fraud.
01:18The bank said effective September 1 it will no longer accept cheques wherein the beneficiary
01:24name states cash.
01:25Accordingly, cash cheques being presented through the central bank clearing system from
01:30September 1 will be returned for the reason pay name differs.
01:36A group of hackers posted a fresh cache of stolen HBO files online and demanded a multi-million
01:42dollar ransom from the network to prevent the release of entire television series and
01:48other sensitive proprietary files.
01:50HBO, which had previously acknowledged the theft of proprietary information, said it
01:55is continuing to investigate and is working with police and cyber security experts.
02:01And finally, the weather.
02:02Today's high across the UAE will be 47 degrees Celsius, dropping to 34 degrees at night.
02:08That's all for now.
02:09Thanks for watching.
