00:00Day 5 here at DIFF, 25 films are being showcased today.
00:12Director Ahmed Salim of 1001 Inventions, an animated short film screening tonight, spoke
00:18to us about his fascinating story of a brave young scientist.
00:21So this is a very colorful, wondrous journey into the life of a scientist from over a thousand
00:28years ago.
00:30This scientist is called Ibn Al-Haytham.
00:32Now many people might know the name, especially out here in the Middle East, but they probably
00:37don't really know who Ibn Al-Haytham was and what did he do and why it's so important for
00:42our lives today, what contribution this man from a thousand years ago had.
00:46So that's what this film is about, it's a short film, partly animated, partly live-action
00:51and it follows his epic journey as he tries to take on the biggest challenge of the time.
00:57It's just like today, we have people trying to get to Mars, well there was an epic challenge
01:00at his time, we're going to find out about it more in the film, but his failure in that
01:05challenge led him to make discoveries that changed the world.
01:10Omar Shargawi, director of Al Medina, a film nominated for a Moore Competition Feature
01:14Film Award, spoke to us about the challenges whilst filming.
01:18This movie, it took me almost nine years to make it, you know, and we were supposed to
01:22shoot it in Cairo, twice we were stopped by incidents in Cairo, the revolution for
01:28example and everything that happened after, so in the end we could not get any insurance
01:33so we had to buckle up and everything was shutting down, but we managed to make it happen
01:41in Jordan within a month with everything, start all over again.
01:44Asad Foldakar, director of Bil Halal, a film screening tonight about four interconnected
01:49stories following devoted Muslim men and women as they try to manage their love life and
01:54desires without breaking any religious rules, spoke to us about his filming experiences.
01:59They're real stories, we're not creating something that is, I'm not imagining stories, they're
02:04real, they're happening with real people, it's just no one before or maybe I don't recall
02:11anyone who brought them up together like this and I'm doing this as a comedy, so it's
02:19not like this is a drama and we're suffering from this, no, it's just a way of living and
02:25let's take it lightly.
02:27That's it for day five, remember for more news and updates log on to gulfnews.com, I'm
