00:00Good day and welcome to a Gulf News special update for Saturday, February the 21st.
00:11Here's the top story at this hour.
00:14A massive fire that broke out in the Torch Tower at Dubai Marina early this morning was
00:19brought under control after a two-hour battle, authorities said.
00:24Hundreds of residents were evacuated to safety from one of the tallest residential towers
00:29in the world as the fire engulfed the skyscraper.
00:34The inferno hit the upper part of the 79-storey torch, triggering an evacuation of nearby
00:40blocks in the Dubai Marina as well.
00:44Dubai Police Chief Major General Kamis Mathar Almazena said there was no criminal suspicion
00:50in the fire, which gutted 20 apartment balconies but did not cause serious damage.
00:57The fire, which started at around 2 a.m. on the 50th floor, was brought under control
01:02by Dubai Civil Defence, said Almazena, who was at the scene of the fire.
01:09Four people sustained minor injuries and were treated by ambulances on the spot.
01:14The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
01:18According to witnesses, the fire appears to have started on the side of the tower facing
01:23Al Sofor Street and spread to the front.
01:26As strong winds fanned the flames, debris and molten glass were seen falling onto the
01:32road.
01:33Once the blaze was put out, the Civil Defence and Police helped escort residents who lived
01:38between the 6th and the 20th floor back into the tower.
01:43Many residents of the tower praised the emergency services for their swift and decisive handling
01:49of the blaze.
